Let's Talk Penn State Football (2 Viewers)

Hard to believe that they are within one score at this point.

ETA: I need to be more optimistic...Okay! As bad as it has seemed up until this point, we're only down one score!

Headed down to the game this Saturday. I believe we're staying at the Hampton a mile from the stadium and walking from there.

I'm not sure what the UMass tailgate (if there is anything) might be. Any recommendations? Or good spots to check out in State College on Friday or Saturday nights?

Was anyone at the Rutgers game this weekend? I heard from some alum friends who were there that the RU fans were acting like jack###es the whole game...Friend said that they had drinks thrown/dumped on them, and that the student section was chanting "#### Penn State" most of the game. Living in NJ now, I know a handfull of RU alum and they're good folk...not sure if that's indicative of the whole student body or not...

I heard many say that the treatment by RU fans was on-par with how they were treated when they went to see PSU/OSU in Colombus....Just curious if others had similar experiences...

There's always a tailgate at PSU games. It's always huge. If you have friends, be sure to figure out how to find them because you won't just stumble upon them. If you don't have friends, you may be able to just make some. I've tailgated with randoms several times. Usually involves asking to jump in on a game of corn hole or ladders and then just making friends.

Fri/Saturday nights on game nights are just like any other in Happy Valley. Head over to Beaver and College and go to whatever bar strikes your fancy. Can't really go wrong...Cafe, Dark Horse, Mad Mex, Phirst, Pickles, Zeno's, Inferno, Indigo (Still there?) many many others...If you hope to sit down, you need to hit the bar very very early. Lines start to form at most places on game nights especially.

Are you at the Hampton on East College? There's a pretty decent sports bar near there, Damon's, but the real action is further down the road, past the stadium given the direction you'd be heading. Worth it though, it's a great downtown. Very walkable with lots of quirky restaurants and basement bars.If you're going to be at the Hampton on Waddle Road, that's a little further out. Probably close to an hour walk. I live about two blocks from there though and I can tell you there are some pretty nice bars nearby, including Otto's – a good local brewpub.

And yeah, it's a major tailgating scene. I'm not sure how easy it will be to find the UMass crowd, but there will be plenty of parties around. You should be in for a pretty fun weekend, depending on your expectations for the game of course.

t-shirt is stupid, but not that big of a deal

banner is really disgusting. I'd probably say something to that #####

Someone should tell Rutgers that the t-shirt thing is OSU shtick. Though, I'm not sure it counts as stealing shtick if everything is spelled correctly and grammatically correct :oldunsure:

The banner was taken down by security hours before the game started. From what I heard, they're going after the guy's parking pass.

I was at the game but as a Rutgers fan you might not buy what I'm saying. There were jackasses on both sides, as expected. The student section was definitely not chanting that *most* of the game. I heard it a few times and I'm a couple sections over. I saw one Rutgers fan try to get into it with a guy wearing a Paterno jersey and fans around him quieted him down. I saw a college-age Penn State fan get taken out by security after screaming in the face of a woman who had to be at least 50. Walking out of the game, a couple PSU fans were trying to start the "We are..." chant and other PSU fans weren't engaging, knowing it was a #### move.

Typical stuff, nothing outrageous. 55K there and thousands more in the parking lots tailgating with no intent on getting tickets, you're going to get a few #######s.

On the game itself, Hackenberg was obviously impressive especially under pressure but that OL is atrocious. I'm honestly not saying this in a smack-talking way, but we couldn't get near that amount of penetration against Howard last week.

agree, there's always bad apples. And with the Sandusky thing, its even more fuel for the fire. I usually don't get worked up about reports like this until they happen over and over and over again from multiple sources, like OSU.

That reminds me...the biggest ##### that I saw on Saturday wasn't a Penn State fan, or an out of control Rutgers student...it was some schmuck wearing an Ohio State shirt.

Thanks for the info.

I'm pretty sure we're at the Hampton on East College. I know our alumni association is doing buses to the stadium, but we made our own arrangements (somehow got tix in Section WG ... years of donations have paid off! ... while everyone else we know is going to be up in the corner of the end zone).

No real expectations for the game, other than that the team under Whipple is in much better shape than most people realize. Still very young, with only eight seniors total and only two on the two deep (NT and ILB). That said, UMass very easily could be 2-1 right now. Should have beaten Vandy on Saturday and had Colorado on the ropes for a bit. Led 31-20 in the second half of both games (final 10 minutes Saturday). As Whipple has said, "they haven't learned how to win yet", which is expected when you're now 2-25 since the move to FBS. The non-conference schedule hasn't done them any favors, but it was a necessary evil for a variety of reasons (many of them financial).

Despite what many experts say, I think this is far from "the worst FBS team in the country." They are getting better quickly, and they could be a dangerous opponent once MAC play begins. I certainly don't expect them to beat Penn State, but 30 points might be a bit much as well (Vegas has badly underestimated them so far).

Regardless, looking forward to a great weekend. I haven't been a ton a big-time college football venues, but there's nothing better, in my opinion.

On behalf of Rutgers University and the Athletic Department, we would like to apologize for the regrettable actions of a handful of Rutgers fans on Saturday that do not convey the message of good, competitive spirit that we look forward to having with our new Big Ten rival Penn State University. Some of the signage and t-shirts that we have been made aware of were both inappropriate and offensive.

I have spoken with and apologized to the Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour and I would like to apologize equally to the Penn State University fans, as well as Rutgers fans that were subjected to this classless display that does not represent the ethos of our university, athletic department or fan base.

The two inappropriate pictures that appeared briefly on our Facebook page as part of a 200-picture montage were immediately removed when we were alerted to their content.

It is unfortunate that the actions of a few spoiled an otherwise historic and recording-setting night that Rutgers fans provided for our first Big Ten football game.
I hate that we've gotten to a point where people feel the need to apologize for this type of crap. Its silly to hold an entire university of fanbase accountable for the actions of a few morons.

Well, Rutgers is on a very short leash with all things PR so I had no doubt this was coming. But if the shirts and signs were just appearing in general, I don't think there would be an apology. Having the shirt appear on the official RU Football Facebook page, even if it got posted along with hundreds of others by someone who was probably an intern and had no idea, warranted the apology in a CYA capacity IMO.

Considering Rutgers had a basketball coach verbally abusing his players and an AD with her own questionable past, Rutgers is hardly in a position to lecture anyone about stuff like this.

Who's lecturing?

Bummer that UMass didn't put forth a better performance, especially given how much better they looked on offense the last couple of weeks. Credit the Penn State D for that, UMass couldn't do anything on the ground. And they haven't been able to contain anything outside all season. So once they figured that out and got Belton going, it was all over. The Sharpe fumble hurt, as did Frohnapfel missing Sifrin in the end zone on fourth down when it was only 6-0.

People here have been great to us, and all of the recommendations above have been spot on. So thanks for that. Really cool college town here.

Good luck to the Lions the rest of the season. Hopefully we can play again once the program is on better footing.

Glad you had a good time and that you had a good experience. Come back anytime.

Been busy and following the game online/on the radio and just now sitting down to watch it.

It sounds like Hackenberg is having a tough time. Is he off today or is the OL not helping him? Or a combo of both?
