Let's Talk Penn State Football (1 Viewer)

I get that it's hard to overturn, but I really thought the ball touched OB just before hitting the pylon.

Insein and I disagree on this but while I think you are right about what you say above, I think the nose of the ball just barely crosses the plane of the goal-line (white) before it hits the ground.  Super close and if it was just a out vs. pylon then I would agree it wasn't a TD.

At first I thought it was short, then I thought it was short again.   Watching frame by frame it did appear the ball touched the pylon right before he hit the ground. From what I have always heard the pylon is in bounds.   That was a tough call for sure either way.

Doesn’t matter becuase the ball crossed the plane of the goal line before it hit the pylon or he went out of bounds.

unbeliveably close though.

I thought the ball hit out, but it was close.  not really that bummed though.  They weren’t that good to begin with, especially without Micah.

Exactly.   This was a good but not great team coming into the season.   Now we know it’s a team that is barely above average.  At least it’s a short season.

HCJF torched for his late game clock management

Franklin was asked about running back Devyn Ford's 14-yard touchdown on the only snap of the possession after the game.

"I understand you've gotta ask the question, but we went through that situation this week," Franklin said. "We went through that situation on the sideline. And obviously we could have handled it better. I could have handled it better. But I don't want to make it about that one play, although I understand why you've gotta ask the question."
Franklin said his running back was instructed on what to do in the waning moments.

"What we wanted to do is get as much as you can and get down," he said. "That's that situation. We've covered it, we went through it during the game, but, again, it was a bunch of situations that came up."
Franklin was asked if his tailback was told to go down and not reach the end zone before the snap.

"I think the hard part here is that there were a lot of plays throughout that game that we would have liked to have been different," Franklin said. "And I know, in some ways, probably people look at that one play, but there are a lot of plays throughout the game that we should have done differently, and we could have handled better, and could have made plays. So it's my job as the head coach to make sure everybody clearly understands those situations and obviously right there that didn't happen."
And yet, here we are AGAIN.  :wall:

Again, it was very obvious that he told Ford or Ford would not have stumbled into the end zone as he remembered too late. It was also obvious that the rest of the offense was told because you can see the PSU WR Dotson (#5) in the replay just turning around when Ford scores and not celebrating or going over to Ford. That never happens on a touchdown, especially at the end of a tight game. Come on. The offense was told clearly enough. Ford just screwed up.

Franklin makes enough late game mistakes without pinning one on him that is undeserved.

He didn't have to make it worse by going for 1.

It definitely didn't touch the pylon before it touched oob. The question was did the tip of the ball break the plane before touching out. The down the line shot shows it just barely touched before breaking but they called it a score on the field. If it was called out on the field that stands too. It just wasn't getting overturned.

This team played about as poorly as I can remember it playing and still lost by a single point on the road against a good team.  I think it is (can still be) a pretty good team.  Lots to clean up, but I don’t think we’ll see that particular diabolical comedy of errors again.

IMO, we’ve got at least a puncher’s chance against tOSU.  At least as good as Indiana had against us.  And we know how that turned out.

Oh sure, there were other issues. I just am amazed at how much flack he is getting for the Ford TD when it seems to me that it was obviously almost completely Ford's fault.
I guess there are people that Franklin just rubs the wrong way.

IMO, he represents himself and the university incredibly well, recruits at a reasonably good level over time, and coaches up his talent (look at how many are getting to the NFL-not just the Saquons). Game decision-making is still his Achilles heel.

I think the coaches that would be clear upgrades on him already have better jobs or are retired.  I just hope can improve the game day stuff.  Soon.

I can't speak for others but I had no issue with the td score. If defense makes a stop it's over and they had just dominated. My beef was not going for 2. There's literally no good answer he can give there.

If they had played tight D like the previous drive when Shaka was in beast mode, they’d have probably won.

OSU is going to roll right over Penn State.
And any chance we had just went down the toilet.

Add Cain to the list of notable player absences Saturday upon kickoff against third-ranked Ohio State. Brown is not expected to return, while the Week 1 targeting ejection of team captain Jesse Luketa makes him unavailable until third-quarter action and further complicating a linebacker unit that lost All-American Micah Parsons in August.
Woof.

Eh, Clifford just isn't very good. Don't expect him to be Fields, but he is playing pretty poorly right now.
When the offensive philosophy is "let's run 18 QB options" I don't see how he can get a chance to play QB. That's basically making him a wildcat RB.

OK, I've been pretty supportive of Franklin.  I was wrong.  This is approaching Jeff Fisher levels of incompetence and unpreparedness.

Freiermuth spuns midseason opt out

"I'm committed to Penn State until I decide my time is up here," he responded. "Like I've said before, I love this university, I love this program, I love the coaches, I love the players. I'm with them in the good times and the bad times. That's not my personality to just walk away when we're down and the program is down. I'm gonna get up and fight back and try to get us our first win this season."
