Let's Talk Penn State Football (1 Viewer)

I'm taking my OSU bragging rights and throwing them in the garbage. Hats off, and all due respect to Penn State. My god you've got an awesome team.

And you guys were right, that ref crew sucks.

I was rooting PSU but my god take Barkely out of the heisman talk.  Had a few shots to make a late impact on that game and came up very short.  Wonder if he's gassed or something. The whole PSU team seemed to play three and half quarters, defense was tired, o line was getting overwhelmed.  McSorely really makes them go, he's a fantastic fantastic college player.

That was a tough three game stretch to navigate, hope they get another crack at the playoff somehow, maybe Michigan can summon an effort

yeah.   you’re nuts btw

Helluva a game Penn St. fans.  Tough team and damn good coach.

Besides trying to kill ourselves when the refs weren't - a win didn't look in the cards for OSU today.

Very lucky for OSU today.

So, we lose one game to a playoff team on the road,  get a major bowl win, and a top 5 final ranking.  Not to shabby, right?

Yeah, crap.  Just doesn't help.

The fat lady hasn't quite sung yet.

I was waiting for some of that McSorley magic in the 4th, and while there were a few small glimpses, he really had little chance to succeed when they had to throw with that pressure. And it was mostly from just bringing 4 at him.

Offensive line went to sleep and the D was exposed.   Barrett had all day to throw to wide open WRs.  Barkley carried PSU but that OSU Dline is fantastic.  OSU is the better team.

Well, that was a tough one to lose.  Seems like scoring 38 in the Horseshoe should have been enough to win.

Neither the offense nor the defense played particularly well.  tOSU moved the ball at will all game long.

Turtling up and playing for that last FG instead of going for the kill was particularly disappointing.

Would have hoped we would have learned to close things out after what happened in the Rose Bowl.

If we drop to number 8 or 9 there is still a path back to top 4 with Notre Dame-Miami, Alabama-Georgia, and tOSU-Wisconsin still to play each other...but we’re going to need much better coaching and execution than the 4th quarter we put together today.

It’s going to be a long drive back from Columbus later today.

Same damn thing as the USC game. While last year was "man what a ride we didn't expect to get here anyway" this year it's just unacceptable.

Oh well. Let's get Barkley that Heisman.

It's all good PSU dudes, win the rest of the games and you'll still be in playoffs.  From that point in time it's in your team's hands.

And lol at CCC2 hating me.  Dude looks up to me like a big brother figure.

And I look at him like my slightly mentally challenged little bro.

I was at the Rose Bowl game vs USC and the 4th quarter was exactly the same as last night..  in control and started to play not to lose..  those handoffs to Barkley had no chance-  where was the wheel route?   go for the throat on the road..   sigh :(

When you say "big", are you referring to the fact that you're old or that you weigh more?

So let's talk about how we get into the playoff at #4.

Right now, I think you've got:

1. Alabama

2. Georgia

3. OSU

4. Wisconsin

5. Notre Dame (I just threw up a little bit)

6. Penn State

7. Clemson

OSU will take care of Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship.

Notre Dame and PSU have 1 point losses to Georgia and OSU, respectively, so that's a wash.  However, ND has a better SOS, so I think they need to take another loss.

Clemson's lost to Syracuse hurts.  And if I'm seeing things correctly, NC State still leads them in the division, so NCST would go to the conference championship.

Miami is still around too, I guess, but it seems like they're playing with fire every week.

Won't Alabama and Georgia play each other in the conference championship if neither loses?

Yeah, but time has shown that a 2 losing to a 1 or vice versa in a conference championship game will not eliminate the loser.  Especially if they are both undefeated going in.  The loss is considered too high quality of a loss.

Good point, but Georgia always chokes so they'll lose before then.  I still say if PSU wins out they're in.  Might have to play Bama in the first round, but in.

I think everything else works itself out, except for ND.  Personally, I think they stand in Penn State's way more than any other team.

And I know that Alabama is Alabama, but they have yet to play a ranked team.  Sure, FSU was #3 at the time, but they've proven to be terrible.

I will give you Penn State folks some credit...You guys do a white-out much better than we will ever pull off a black-out.

Only scenario I see (and it's a slim one) is win out, OSU loses to Michigan. That will drop them in the standings to like #6-9. OSU beats Wisconsin in B10 title. We'll be sitting at 10-1 with our 1 loss being at #6 OSU by 1 point. The committee may look at that and say that's a team that deserves to be in.

But who knows.

Well, ####. Had a great trip to State College despite the end result of the game. They still serve cold beer at Zeno's, co-eds still dress like sluts on halloween weekend, and I threw so much football and Frisbee this weekend that I can barely lift my arm today. Took a picture of our old place and it still looks exactly like we left it 20 years ago. Good times.  :banned:

Isn't that basically how Ohio State made it last year despite losing to Penn State. If OSU were to lose to Michigan but then beat Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Pennstate could sit at home and make it at 10-1.

We've got a reasonably viable path, but you're right that it begins and ends with winning out.  Then I'd like to see:

  • Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma which should take the Big 12 out of play.  Right now, they (Oklahoma) are one of the biggest threats to us if it comes down to comparing a bunch of one-loss teams.  Even though we have a better loss than they do, they beat the team we lost to.
  • Miami beat Notre Dame, but then lose to Clemson in the ACC championship so they (Miami) don't jump us,  But if Miami wins out and beats Clemson too then that's OK since that would take Clemson out of play.
  • Have tOSU either beat Wisconsin twice (preferable) or split since they will likely play twice between now and the end of the year.   EDIT:  Apparently I can't read a schedule, and tOSU & Ohio State can only meet in the Big 10 championship.  So I amend this to hoping that Michigan beats Wisconsin and probably that tOSU does too.
That would have us comparing one-loss resumes with Alabama and/or Georgia and potentially Miami and Wisconsin for the 4th slot behind the SEC winner, Big 10 winner, and ACC winner.  I don't see the PAC 12 (whose top-rated team is currently #12) surging enough to knock any of those out.

Long story short, things are set up for:

  1. SEC winner
  2. Big 10 Winner
  3. ACC winner
  4. A one-loss team from one of those conferences.  We've got a good story vs. most of them.
And Auburn still plays both Alabama & Georgia (potentially more than once).  This could get even easier if those teams just start knocking each other off.

But we got to win out and win big. They need to put the petal to the metal like old school college days and win by 30.
