Let's Talk Penn State Football (3 Viewers)

I don't understand why PSU isn't running the ball more.  Three carries by their tailbacks and all successful.  And the best one, Cain, hasn't touched the ball yet.

Josh Gattis from Bama is the OC and calls plays for Michigan.    He will be fired after the season...but he makes 900K a year for 3 years.  Worst Michigan offense I have even seen.

As good as Clifford was in the first half is as bad as he's been in the 2nd so far. They need to wake the #### up

He gets a little bit of pressure and he immediately looks to leave the pocket.  It looks like he takes his eyes off downfield.  

But the playcalling in the third quarter was atrocious.  Way too conservative.

 
Hope we paste MSU next week in a no doubter. Can't take another close win. We owe the Spartans some pay back anyway.

 
Hats off to Michigan.  They could’ve folded but they didn’t.  Fought back and had it tied minus a drop.  I’ll take the ugly win.

 
Man, that was a stressful game,  I didn’t see any fans leaving until the clock finally ran out which is unusual for Beaver Stadium.

1-0 this week.

 
Two things:

1. The get out to a lead and then watch it get chipped away as the offense disappears game plan is truly exhausting. That’s not going to get the job done in Columbus. 
 

2. Where the hell was Noah Cain!? Back to back 100 yard games and he gets a half dozen carries in a 21-0 ball game. Head scratching.

1.  Agreed.  It's extremely frustrating.  To be honest, though, I'm not sure the best game plan will help us in Columbus.  OSU looks unstoppable this year.

2.  That's the million dollar question.  Franklin seems to outthink himself sometimes.  Almost as if he thought UM would expect Cain, so we're going to switch it up, as opposed to just going with your bread and butter.

 
Full disclosure, I only saw the 2nd half. No idea how PSU built the 21-0 lead. But in the 2nd half, that QB looked very skittish. I lost track of how many times he began to scramble away from phantom pressure when he would have been much better off staying in the pocket. Is that normal for him, or did UM just have him spooked?

That seems to be normal for him. Several times I've given him the excuse that he's a sophomore quarterback who wasn't expected to start this year, so he's very green. But at some point that's got to stop and he's got to settle down.

If Clifford settles down, he has the potential to be a very good QB.   It is a big if though.  No idea if he can work through his flaw.

It wasn’t just Cain.

Of the 29 credited rushing attempts, three were kneels at the end of the game.  11 were Clifford.  2 were Hamler.

That leaves just 13 actual RB rushing attempts for the game.  None got more than 5 (Cain had 22 himself vs. Iowa the week before, I think).  I heard on a podcast this morning that the last drive was the first and only time in the 2nd half that we had a RB get a rush on 1st down the whole 2nd half.

Not sure what Rahne is thinking, but sure hope the light bulb comes on soon (and for good).  We left the defense out there for 37+ minutes last night and as good as they are they got gassed and gashed in the 2nd half.  Which has been the theme against the better teams the past few years.

On to MSU.

I thought he played pretty good overall yesterday.  He missed some deep shots and wide open receivers and he still occasionally makes the wrong reads but (again) protected the ball.  The 2 TDS to Hamler were perfect passes.  I think he is up to something like 19 TDS for the year (including ones he ran in himself) vs. only 2 interceptions.

The larger issue IMO is the play calling.  People’s exhibit A is the late drive yesterday where instead of running the ball we threw it to Slade for a 4-yard loss and then followed that up with a sack leading to 3rd and 19 and giving the ball right back to Michigan.

Rahne seems to be a half beat off the right tempo at times.

I like Franklin, but he needs to hire an assistant head coach who takes over a lot of game day. He us a bad gameday coach. The team was way to passive after getting the big lead. The timeout call before the half is possibly the most baffling coach's decision I have ever seen.

Well said.  The defense burned out.  Doesn't matter how good you are, you put any unit on the field that long and they're going to wear down.

I don't get the approach to this backfield at all.  They talk about these four great backs (and they seem to be) and they don't utilize them.  On the same subject, Franklin needs to pick one or two and go with them.  I get the impression that he's trying to keep them all happy, but I feel like it backfires because rotating four different guys back there just disrupts the flow of the offense.  It makes the rhythm different every drive.

 
I spent the weekend in the woods and missed the game... but I left on Friday and I witnessed MILES upon MILES of backed up traffic on I-81 north of 322.  I have to imagine traffic was that bad all the way to Happy Valley. 

P.S. a friend of mine who went with his family did not get home until 4am.  Bananas.

My boss took his son and dad to a game last year. The grass lots were all closed so they had to park at the Nittany Mall.  After the game, the line for the busses were insanely long, so they walked back. He (a PSU grad) said he was never going to another game.

I haven't been to a game since the early 90s when my brother was going there.

 
Remaining schedule:

10/26 - Sparty: winnable

11/2 - BYE

11/9 - at Minnesota: tough, but winnable

11/16 - Indiana: winnable

11/23 - at Ohio State: very tough, will need to bring the A+++ game

11/30 - Rutgers: Unless the bus gets lost, we're winning this one.

Realistically, this team could end up 11-1 and appear in a NY6 bowl game.  Worst case, it's 10-2 and we're still playing close to or on NYD.  Trying to be positive here. :shrug:

Went to the game as well, Section EC.  First half was glorious, 2nd half was hold on to dear life.  Hated the offensive play calling in the 2nd half and they really need to stop with the RB rotation horse crap.  Its Noah Cain, feed him the friggin ball and stop opening your QB to hits.  Clifford got hit way too much because of the up the middle for two yard keeps.

Defense stepped up when it needed to but thought they struggled to get pressure on Patterson.  Michigan's O-Line was stellar blocking, both in the run and pass but especially the pass.  Didn't seem like the Lions could get to him.  Shaka Toney was hurt but hopefully he came back in.  I didn't notice.

7-0 is 7-0 though.  Destroy the Dantonio Spartans please.  #WeAre
