Levi Jones signs extension (1 Viewer)

The Bengals locked up another key offensive player Tuesday when they reached a six-year contract extension with left tackle Levi Jones, according to agent Kenny Zuckerman.

The Bengals, who won’t comment on deals until they are signed, now have Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Palmer in the fold through 2014, Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Johnson through 2011, and Jones, a Pro Bowl alternate, through 2012. Plus, running back Rudi Johnson, the franchise’s single-season rushing leader, is here through 2009 and wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, with 150 caches over the past two seasons, through 2008.

Jones becomes the highest-paid offensive lineman in club history with a contract surpassing the $30.6 million deal three-time Pro Bowler Willie Anderson signed before the 2000 season and ends after this one. Zuckerman says the deal in new money makes Jones the league’s fourth-highest paid offensive lineman with guarantees of $16.3 million in a total package of a little more than $40 millon, putting him in the tier below the tackle trinity of Jonathan Ogden, Orlando Pace and Walter Jones.

The Levi Jones deal doesn’t preclude an extension for Anderson and left guard Eric Steinbach, but one or both now may not get done before the season is over. Anderson’s agent said Tuesday he’s had no talks with the club this offseason.

Extensions for Jones and right guard Bobbie Williams make the Bengals breath a little easier along a front that set a club record when it gave up just 21 sacks while Rudi Johnson set the team’s season rushing record with 1,458 yards.

Jones is a major reason Palmer went to his first Pro Bowl with the Bengals’ first three-digit passer rating, shutting out several of the NFL’s top sackers, including the Colts’ Dwight Freeney, the Ravens’ Terrell Suggs, and the Packers’ Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila.

Jones, the club’s first-round pick in 2002 who turns 27 next month, had started 59 straight games until sitting out last season’s finale in Kansas City after the club had clinched the AFC North title. Included in that streak is the now legendary start against the 49ers in 2003 that came just six days after Jones had arthroscopic knee surgery.

One would think they are trying to make an example of what the desirable Bengal football player is.

I like this move a lot, and hope some of these young immature guys get the message: if you want to get paid, you need to be a good, dependable football player and not be a liability.

The Lions just did this with Backus.

This is a good signing for the Bengals. He is the anchor for this O-line. While Willie is good, due to his age I would think that Steinbach has to be next.

For as much flack as they caught when they drafted him, he has turned out to be a very solid OT.

Word is that Backus' deal provided the framework for this one.
 The Bengals are looking to the Lions now for tips on good personnel decisions....
Doubtful -- but I'm sure they appreciated the extra set of numbers to help set the market. Looks like a great deal for the Bengals. Lock him up for less than the premium tackles have already signed for.

Sucks. I was hoping he'd test the FA waters and SD would make a run at him.

Remember when Levi Jones was drafted and Kiper had a complete meltdown on the Bengals and pointed to drafting Jones as the reason CIN will never make the playoffs, who was the player Kiper was sure they should have taken instead of Jones? Somebody out there has to remember.

I hope you're right in regards to Steinbach. He's going to be awful pricey, though, and Whitworth and Andrews have been getting bunches of snaps inside just in case.

Philip BuchanonETA: Although, I remember some folks clamoring for Shockey, too.

The Bengals have been very good drafters since 2001, and they are now tasting the fruits of those drafts.

You are the man Bramel.Buchanon was the name I was trying to remember. Knew it was a DB, I just couldn't rememeber which one.

Yep and they totally killed them for 'reaching' about 8 or 9 picks to get him. I'm curious how many other true 10-year left tackles have been drafted in the last 6 years.-QG
