Here is my case for why I feel that now is the time to move SJax and that targetting Larry Johnson makes a lot of sense.
In a 12 team full PPR redraft money league with 1 UTIL slot I was thrilled to land the 2nd pick and quickly snapped up SJax. I then followed that up with 2 WR's (Chad and Fitz) before adding RB/QB fodder I now regret. We did draft on NFL Draft Day (very early) and had a rookie draft (reverse order) a few months later. The teams with late picks are mostly the better teams so far. That said, I sit at 3-2 and just made a move with the 5-0 team in my 4 team division who was fortunate enough to pick late in Round 1.
I gave SJax and Earnest Graham for LJ. It also freed up a roster spot I used to pick up another backup RB for possible future value (Adrian Peterson CHI was cut last weekend). It should be noted that he ripped off (I felt atleast) a winless owner taking Larry Johnson and giving back Lamont Jordan (who went off then promptly got hurt that weekend).
The way I see it, LJ is not injured and has some great matchups and 2nd half schedule. I wonder if I overpaid but I felt an initial come strong offer would be the only way to pull this off. SJax will miss atleast this week and the risk grows that he may never be the stud he was drafted to be all season given their winless record. Will they go ahead and IR him? Will Leonard stay in the mix making him less of a PPR stud on a weak offense? Will Bulger return to form? Will their makeshift OL gel?
Mainly it was the risk that he may not come back all year and I felt I could not afford to wait any longer. I knew I couldn't get an Addai or Parker for him but this move just felt right. Giving Graham stung a bit but in a PPR I can't imagine he has more than UTIL player value and probably the key to why the guy accepted my offer without hesitation.
Even better, I play the divisional team now owning SJax during his bye in week 9 assuming he's even playing by then and LJ has a good matchup. In theory I've hurt his team unless SJax comes back strong soon and helped my own assuming LJ improves as the season goes along.
LJ's offense looked horrible last week however there are signs that it should improve especially as Bowe continues to mature and become more of a threat. Their upcoming schedule suggests shootouts are possible after facing a string of tough defenses who all got out to early leads against KC. I think that will change.
Before last week's games I made two more moves that now look extremely lopsided and I feel I've rebuilt my team from mediocre to the class of the league with 3 trades within the last 5 days.
Owning McNabb, Schaub, and Campbell I gave up Campbell to a team thin at QB and FatDale because they were short at RB and Galloway. I got back Randy Moss and 2 free roster spots. Some may say I overpaid but I'd rather own the stud and I still feel I have a deep team.
The 2nd trade happened that same day and really looks worse for the guy I traded with. I gave Jamal Lewis, Pittman, and Stecker for Edge and 2 roster spots. Both Lewis and Pittman got hurt and any hype Stecker gained was lost coming out of the Saints bye. He needed the RB depth and instead gave up a RB who has an amazing go forward schedule and now has less than before at 4-1.
So using those roster spots I snagged a few more fliers and now field a team of McNabb/Schaub, Edge/Larry Johnson with Ahman Green hopefully back for depth and bye weeks plus Kenton Keith, Adrian Peterson (Chi), and Andre Hall (deep flier) at RB. I'll probably only start 2 most weeks since I will now field in a PPR Chad Johnson, Fitz, and Randy Moss at WR. For depth I'll have Hilliard, Chris Henry, Booker, and Wade. I round out with Tony G, Vinatieri, Chargers DT, and a few open roster spots to fill up a little more depth. Even if LJ doesn't come through I should have a strong team but if he does turn it around I should be in good shape.
