Going to London August 10-13th, basically all day 11th and 12th will be free to explore, eat, etc. We've got a tour book and stuff, so we'll get the basics from there. Do you all have any suggestions for where to eat, what to see, etc?

Westminster Abbey is the main thing to see imho -- bitter (tasty lukewarm beer) at any of the kajillions of pubs around.

Definitely do the London Eye, preferrably at night. Take the tour bus. You can get on and off whenever you want and get to see all the sights. Plus you get a free boat tour on the Thames River. I just loved walking around at night.

I can't help you with the food. We found some decent places by accident, but none worth seeking out.

Tower of London was my favorite place for sight seeing, don't miss that. If you want to take a day trip and rent a car, Bath is only a 90-120min drive and that was pretty cool.

:goodposting: If you have more time and can hit Bath, I would also check out Stonehenge.

Morning... PM me for ideas, etc. Let me know where you're staying and I'll find some local restaurants, and also a few sites to book tables, etc...

Everyone I talked to said Stonehenge was teh suck, becuase it's fenced off and you can't get within a quarter mile of it. We were going to go on our way back from Bath and every single person I talked to who had been there told us not to bother.

Maybe it's changed in recent years, but I was able to get relatively close. Not as close as, say, Spinal Tap, but close enough.

OXO Tower restaurant has good food and a great view of London from the south side of the river.

OXO Tower

Sights depend on what you like. I agree that the London Eye should be on your list regardless of your interests. The National Gallery is centrally located (you'll probably end up in Trafalgar Square at some point anyway) and free, and includes some great works that are nice to see in person.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Too bad I won't be going to London, as you may have guessed. Oh well, we may drive around eastern France to make up for it.. sigh.

Really? Why not? I haven't been watching every news channel for the past 12 hours today, so I have no earthly clue what's going on. :sarcasm:

We had no idea what was going on at work all day.. Just a random email saying. "umm.. anyone going TDY to the UK anytime soon?" :lmao:

Bump this thread if you end up driving eastern France instead. Annecy and Mont Blanc come to mind as top of mind suggestions...

If you are in the Alsace-Lorraine region, check out Riquewihr(sp) at the tail end of the 'route du vin' - actually the 'route du vin'is pretty cool if you like white wine - whoever likes it least drives.

If you go on "The Big Bus Tour" (a bunch of thoughs red double decker buses), they will take you to all the good sites. Everything that has been said above. Well except Stonehenge, that's several hours from London.

Also, the Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesties Theater was  . Of course, I was pretty tanked from the Sherlock Holmes Pub before we went there, but I'm sure it's a good show sober as well. :D

Last summer we arrived in the UK a week after the Tube bombings. Cancelled our London reservations and went north instead--had a great time in Edinburgh. You may want to consider it.

I'll be in London for the next two weeks, alas not on vacation - I'll check out a few of these places

If you go to a restaurant and see sticky toffee pudding on the dessert menu, order it. It's a spongey cake with a caramel/toffee sauce on top and clotted cream. Excellent. My girlfriend and I had it at a place called Tutton's.

Stay away from the casinos in town. I've seen dealers drop cards on the ground and pick them up and put them on the table, dealers drop several cards and pick them up and deal them back out - it's terrible. Sportsbooks are abundant, but you won't find much action on anything but the NFL, and a lot of the books don't understand the concept of a point spread.

I'll second/third/fourth the nomination of the Tower of London. It's a cool tour because you get a ton of history. You also get to hang out with a beefeater.

I spent some time in Chalon-sur-Saone (between Beaune and Lyon)... I could suggest some good restaurants around there. The main suggestion I have, though, is to buy a road map, rent a car, and just wander around a bit. The countryside there is really neat. The map I bought had little icons where there were castles or ancient ruins, so we spent a day puttering around hitting as many castles and ruins as we could - from palatial castles with nice gardens and tours to mean defensive castles to Roman baths. There's also that gigantic Roman aqueduct near (I think) Uxes if you're further south. For London, the British Museum was my favorite thing. There's also a great science museum there, and their museums are free.

Bump...anyone want to add to this? I just booked a week long trip for May and will be using some of these suggestions. Here's what I have so far:

We are staying in South Kensington.

Houses of Parliament/Big Ben

Buckingham Palace/changing of the guard

London Eye (better at night?)

Westminster Abbey

Thames River boat tour

Tower of London/royal jewels

Trafalgar Square

National Gallery

British Museum

Oxo Tower Restaurant

Windsor/Stonehenge/Bath one day tour

Castles/ruins in the countryside

Anyone want to add to this list? Do Chelsea/Manchester United still play in mid-May?

opinions on your list:

Houses of Parliament/Big Ben

London Eye (better at night?) -- we we're going to do this but didn't. No real reason why.

Westminster Abbey -- pretty cool....I'd recommend this.

Tower of London/royal jewels -- as noted above, do not miss this. very cool history and learning here.

Trafalgar Square Feh. I guess it's cool to walk through but in retrospect I don't think I would have missed much if we skipped it

Windsor/Stonehenge/Bath one day tour -- Everyone who I've talked to says skip Stonehenge...but Bath is cool...see next comments

Castles/ruins in the countryside -- Do this. Incorporate this with the previous item and find a B&B in or near bath to stay for the night...there's tons. Take two days and drive to bath, rent a car and you take the M4 to get down there but don't take it back. Drive back through the country side.....we did this for a day and found a couple cool castle ruins and cool little villages that looked like there were timewarped from the 1600s.

Good suggestions so far, and I second most of the museums and tours...

I would like to add Tate Gallery though, if you're into art. By far my favorite art museum in London.

St. Paul's Cathedral is a pretty good way to spend an hour. In addition to the church, there's a crypt, a whispering gallery at the base of the dome and if the stairs to the very top are reopened, a great view of central London.

My favorite museum in London is the National Portrait Gallery. It's nothing but portraits from the past 500 years. Some of the art is pretty mediocre but the summary biographies of the subjects are interesting.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in South Ken is worth a visit as well. The plaster casts of ancient pillars and statues are impressive.

Restaurants are tough. In my limited experience, London is a great place to eat if you have money to spend but if you're trying to eat on the cheap, the quality and variety of food is below average.

For the new bump.......Just to name a couple places of interest....

It could take a couple days to go through The British Museum, but if you have half day to rush through it, I doubt you will have any regrets.

Camden and Piccadilly Circus are fun areas for people watching.

Walking through the historic areas of London at night is awesome.

And as always.....for your own safety "mind the gap".

And if you are going for more than a week, it is more than worth it to take the chunnel to Paris for a two day / one night visit. (or longer if you can manage it).

Download the (free) Rick Steves podcasts. He gives an audio tour of a few places in London.

This worked pretty well with the British Museum. It's not too long and he points out some pretty cool things that are relevant.

His walks around London aren't too bad either.

Stopped by the British Library - this place was pretty cool. You don't really need an audio tour for this since it's pretty small.

mind the gap? Is that a dental reference?

Combining Camden Town and the British Museum is a good day. Spend the morning in Camden, have lunch in a pub in the area and take the bus south to the British Museum.

Going to be in London on a 10 hr layover. Never been before. Im looking for 1 restaurant for a late lunch early dinner. Should i check out some pub food? If so, recommendations?

I'll be there this Saturday.

What's the easiest/best way to get from Heathrow to the fun touristy parts of London? Heathrow Express? The Tube?

I ended up taking the tube and it was quick and easy. But depending on where your headed both should work ok.

Heathrow Express is faster but more expensive.

How long was the ride? Would it be a bit quicker during the weekend?

~ $54.43 is kinda hefty for public transportation. Round trip, but still.

This site can give you directions where ever you need to go and an estimate of the cost and how long it will take. In my case, i believe the express would have gotten me into london about 30 mins quicker, however, where i was going i would have had to hop on the tube anyway, so it didnt make sense. But, depending on where you are headed and how much time you have it might be worth it.

what time do you get into the airport and what time to you need to be back?

Land at Heathrow at 2:15pm Saturday stop-over until 10:25PM. It'd be cool to roam London a little and get some fish & chips and a beer.

So according to your link, I'd take the Piccadilly line to Paddington stop?

Looks like I might be going to London for work/fun, should I be excited, is it a drag, should I consider spending time in other cities (might have around 10 days?

I've been to Europe but never to the UK.

All I have on my list or reasons to go are:

  • Pubs
  • More pubs
  • Beer
  • The British Museum
  • Kensington/Hyde Parks
  • Monty Python reunion (at the O2)
How about after that? I should I be pursuing this, should I go? Things to do there?

Thanks.

Probably the only thing that is going to disappoint you is the lack of pubs. They are disappearing.
