I have much respect for Bloom, but just remember to temper your enthusiasm a bit from his levels. We're talking about a guy who just took 8 rookies in the first 20 rounds of an initial dynasty startup draft. He has great knowledge of young prospects, but realistically very few UDFAs ever amount to any fantasy value even if they make rosters. I've read that, and it is sobering. I've read other articles along similar lines in the past too. I seldom take much of a look at players drafted after the 3rd round these days in startup drafts unless their circumstances are extraordinary. If they begin to rise above their draft status in camp, then I take notice, but not in May. Far too many from the 4th round on are completely worthless for fantasy to invest a pick when there are productive vets on the fantasy draft board to choose from.As if on cue: sobering linkI have much respect for Bloom, but just remember to temper your enthusiasm a bit from his levels. He said "might make an impact". Maybe I should be clear that "might" equals 1 or 2%. That being said, each of these guys have a reason to keep tabs on them:Myles: One of the most impressive WRs all week at the Senior Bowl, NFL athlete, underutilized in a run first offense.Price: Extremely athletic and productive at FCS level - also room in the WR corps in KC - competing with Chris HannonMason : Very athletic underachiever - also room in the WR corps.- competing with Tim CarterMosley: Great size-speed back (think Jacobs), underutilized in Baylor's spread offense - steelers could use a pounder.Ware: Great year as a true frosh in Georgia- Henry and White are in front of him.O'Keith: terrific athlete stuck behind Lynch and Forsett, KC could have RB opening as soon as 08.Chris Leak, Dave Ball and Selvin Young have both been discussed on this board and are the most prominent UDFAs.I have much respect for Bloom, but just remember to temper your enthusiasm a bit from his levels. We talked to Brian Baldinger on the audible last night (coming soon!) - he was just up at Seahawks minicamp and singled out Taylor as a player to watch when I asked him about favorite second day guys.Courtney Taylor will have a decent QB
I'll roster those kinds of guys for cheap later on too if it looks like there may be opportunity (like with Andre Hall before Henry arrived in Denver). It's just that I won't generally draft them in May. But I'm mostly used to 20 man rosters. In a 26-man, like the two leagues you and I are in together, it's pretty hard not to roster some complete fliers like the guys you mention because the available talent for the bottom of rosters is so thin.See, you are smart. BTW, Bloom -- I wasn't intending to disrespect the UDFA offerings, or your choice to draft 8 rookies in 12 rounds. To be clear to other readers, he was drafting better quality rookies, not UDFAs. I just wanted Zadok to keep perspective on the chances of these UDFAs, and your 1-2% is probably pretty close.
Finally, one more name -- the bowling ball that is Tyrone Moss. He was tearing it up for U. of Miami as a junior in 2005 through 8 games when he tore his ACL. His stats for those 8 games were an eye-popping 701 yards on 137 carries (5.1 average) and he led the ACC in touchdowns with 12. After that, 2006 was pretty much a lost year due to the injury. He was in CLE camp but was cut this week. Look for him if he lands in a good spot. I was actually surprised CLE let him go, given their mess at RB, so maybe he's no good any more. But I'm at least keeping an eye on him due to that 2005 season. His story has parallels to Frank Gore.
Im afraid his burst is gone. It's a shame because he's a natural RB.If you're looking for a Frank Gore, the best candidate this year is Dwayne Wright. Finally, one more name -- the bowling ball that is Tyrone Moss. Thanks. Yeah, you have the advantage of seeing these guys. I just have a memory of 2 years ago when I was pretty impressed by the guy. What a shame, these injuries. Maybe one day, say around the year 2100, it'll be routine for all athletes to have some revolutionary preventative ACL strengthening procedure or device that doesn't inhibit movement. Wouldn't that be nice.Im afraid his burst is gone. Shaddup!!! My draft isn't over!I just picked up RB Gary Russell in a deep 16 team league. I saw him play in college and was very impressed. He was a great player for the one year he played a lot in Minnesota. 1200 yards, 6 yards per carry and 18 TD's at a major college program is nothing to sneeze at. He has a lot of upside, and who knows, maybe he can get his head on straight one day. From what I read, he doesn't seem like a very motivated person, but felt it was worth the shot since it is just an end of roster spot. After all, this is a deep sleeper post. Hopefully, this guy will wake up from the deep sleep he appears to be in.Along with him, I picked up 3 other UDFA's: QB Matt Gutierrez, WR Dave Ball and the above mentioned RB Tyrone Moss. I also drafted RB Selvin Young, because there is no such thing as a bad Denver RB prospect.EDIT to add: I didn't even realize Russell had signed with the Steelers. I can't think of too many better places for him to be.
I hope he's been working his butt off since the combine. He won't last long if he's hasn't - his showing was terrible.Gutierrez is interesting because he was a top prospect coming out of HS before tearing his labrum and giving way to Chad Henne. My impression after watching him in Shrine practices is that his shoulder may not be right - he showed a funky throwing motion especially on the run.I just picked up RB Gary Russell in a deep 16 team league. not much. Apparently the Browns think more of him than they do of Tyrone Moss. Jackson was impressive on his very limited carries at Michigan this year, but they just about all came in a 3 game stretch against weak competition. He did not light it up at his pro day - running in the 4.6sbloom, what do you know about jerome jackson rb UDFA signed by clevland?
I'm a big Mich fan. I love Jackson... I always wondered why he didn't play a lot and I found out that he got in Lloyd's dog house his freshman year. He never #####ed about it and looked great when he did get to play. I think he could suprise.bloom, what do you know about jerome jackson rb UDFA signed by clevland?
I liked Jackson at UM. He was from my hometown of Saginaw Mi, so of course I payed more attention to him than most. I always thought he looked decent when given the chance. Of course, it's all about opportunities, and there's not much you can do stuck behind Chris Perry, Mike Hart, and soph Kevin Grady your whole career.bloom, what do you know about jerome jackson UDFA signed by clevland?
Vincent, like Moss, has just lost his burst. He's still a decent receiver out of the backfield, but not much more...Snelling, on the other hand, really intrigues me in a Nick Goings kind of way. He was a lead blocking fullback who was decent as a power back and good receiver once given the chance to carry the ball for Virginia last year. What really interests me about him is that Atlanta signed Ovie Mughelli in the offseason, a lead blocking beast. I feel comfortable assuming that the Falcons did not draft Snelling simply to be Mughelli's backup. We all know that neither Dunn nor Norwood can push a pile in short yardage, and Justin Griffith is now with the Raiders. I think Snelling can move into Griffith's role (or whatever the similar role is in Petrino's offense) and be a real sleeper if Dunn is marginalized and they turn to Norwood.what about justin vincent and jason snelling for atlanta. snelling was drafted and vincent is a UDFA. is snelling a FB? which one has more possibility of being the new "power" back petrino likes?
Hey CP, big "U" fan here. I can tell you that Gore and Moss are not even close in stories. Yes they both blew out an ACL(Gore twice), but that's the end of the similarities. Gore was amazing as a Freshman and was pushing guys like McGahee and Portis to turn pro early because thei chance of being a feature back was going to be slim. No one ever put on a Miami uniform IMO with more hype than Frank Gore. This was in the middle of Miami winning and competing for National CHampionships in 2001 and 2002...so I just want to say that its nice to spotlight a guy, but these two backs are in different solar systems in terms of talent and skills.I'll roster those kinds of guys for cheap later on too if it looks like there may be opportunity (like with Andre Hall before Henry arrived in Denver). Bloom,Any opinion on Ahmad Bradshaw's chances with the NYG behind Jacob's, Droughns, & Ward?I'll add some more names with blurbs to this thread when I get a chance later today.
I like his chances of making the roster - he's more of a jitterbug scatback, and no one else on the roster can fill that roster.
