Looking for a new pairing of words - short a/short e (1 Viewer)

Lousy Attention Whore
I'm hoping to accumulate a list of word-pairs where the only distinction between them is the "short a" and "short e" sounds. I've got most of the obvious ones out of the way. Try to avoid personal nouns like "Ben" and "Dan." Also try to restrict abbreviations and acronyms to the most common ones ("tech" and "REM" are common; "bev" is only common in the service industry). Short phrases are okay, as long as the only distinction is the one vowel sound we are looking for. I'll place pairings that rely on common regional pronunciations in parentheses.

The list so far:

  • access/excess
  • and/end
  • (axe it/exit)
  • back/beck
  • bad/bed
  • bag/beg
  • ban/been
  • banned/bend

You know how to party.

Is "affect/effect" one, or am I misunderstanding the idea.
Normally, I'd say this works, but the change in syllabic emphasis also affects the pronunciation of "effect," turning the short e into a schwa.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I think the first vowel sound in both of those words is a schwa.

So many possibilities with this word for shtick:

"I thought I had a good fart cooking but it turned into a schwa"

"Ma! It's cold out. Put on your schwa!!"

"May the schwa be with you."

"My schwa is bigger than your schwa."

"Just got back from a run. Gonna go take a schwa."

This one I will take issue with.  I don't believe "what" rhymes with "but".  Could vary by region though.
Interesting. So you pronounce "what" so it rhymes with "bat," "mat," and "cat"? I don't think I've ever heard that, but I'm not doubting you. Where did you grow up?

Hmm...  I will concede "what" does not rhyme with "bat", which is the real point.  It doesn't rhyme with "but" either IMO, but ultimately that is inconsequential.

IMO, "what" rhymes best with "caught".

I could see "what" rhyming with "but" or "cot", depending on region, but under no circumstance could I ever imagine it rhyming with "caught."
