Looking for advice from a Dentist (1 Viewer)

Thirty odd years ago when I was a kid I lost my two front, top teeth. They replaced them with crowns. About six months ago I got a bad pain in the gums way up almost under my nose. Went to a dentist, she tells me the root canal has failed, gives me antibiotics and sends me to see an endodontist. Pain goes away, swelling goes down, although I get a little ...bump on the gums after it's all done.

Endodontist says they can try to repair the root canal by going in through the gum (sounds awful) but he doesn't like his chances. Says the root is likely cracked, or at least that he can't guarantee it isn't cracked and probably not worth the risk. So back to the original dentist, who tells me I have three options:

1) Implant

2) Bridge. The tooth next to it is a crown from 30 years ago, so they would only have to put a new crown on the other side.

3) Ignore it for now, and see if it gets worse, bearing in mind that any infection will be eating away at the bone and make option 1) less viable.

Any advice? The implant procedure sounds pretty awful, sounds like it's going to run about $4k, and I'm not sure it's covered in my dental insurance. Then again, losing a good tooth for the bridge sounds kind of crazy too.

I forgot option 4) Get it pulled and go around looking like a 1970s hockey goalie.

Tough decision.

I had to work with my brother-in-law on this recently and he went with the implant. Of course he was able to get some discounts from me and the surgeon to lower his cost down to about 2700... but that's neither here nor there.

I think implants are great, the main downside is you'll need some type of temporary there while the implant in integrating. Odds are you should consider getting the crown done next to it replaced at the same time for optimum color match.

Bro-in-law likes his implant, but honestly he's always wondered if he just should've gone bridge because it sure would've been a lot less hassle for him.

I am in a similar situation. Front two teeth knocked out as a yute. Nothing left to attach a crown to. I don't have dental insurance. Don't really want to go through the process of implants. My other teeth are healthy. Is there any issue with strength doing a bridge? It seems less expensive and an easier process.

Had the implant done on a few years back on the front tooth. What a PITA? Now that its all done, I'm glad that I did it, but at the time, it sucked. The whole process took like 4 months, most of which I had no front tooth or just the post. From my recollection, the only thing that insurance covers is half the cost of the new crown. If you do it and you don't mind looking like an idiot for 4 months, don't buy the temporary tooth contraption (I think they called it a flipper) that you wear while everything is healing. Its ridiculously uncomfortable and I kept it in for maybe a day before tossing it.
