Looks like D. Will may be staying in Carolina (1 Viewer)

Well they just gave Charles Johnson 72 million.

Of course not, Johnson was a far more important signing, everyone knew that.

I think deangelo is waiting to see what Bradshaw does.

He wants to go to a contender and the giants are his top choice.

Carolina and Denver suck but in the end no other contenders want to shell out a lot for him so he'll have to pick one of them.

Time again for us Stewart and D. Will owners to get a little nervous.

From Rotoworld:

Budget constraints "may preclude" the Broncos from signing free agent DeAngelo Williams, according to the Denver Post.

The Broncos are apparently making their defensive front a priority over the running game. They made an offer to Charles Johnson before he re-signed with Carolina and are expected to be in the running for free agent Cullen Jenkins. Therefore, the Post says the Broncos are interested in cheaper options at running back such as Willis McGahee and Jason Snelling. For now, signs point toward Williams heading back to the Panthers.

This is not good news. I know fantasy owners are upset, but even as a Panther fan, they need to spend some money on a corner or DB like Jonathan Joseph or Cromartie. JStew could be a #1 back and is still young. DWill is on the wrong side of 29-30. Goodsen and Sutton were decent enough last year. It's frustrating watching this as a Panther fan, b/c we have other needs than just having two stud RBs. My hope is that they don't cough up a ton of money to keep him. I will be watching the boards anxiously throughout the day...

Agree. Can't for the life of me think as to why the Panthers would want to spend their money here either. With their needs, I think they should feel comfortable with Stewart and Goodson and put their money to better use in other areas of need.I think the same of Denver. With all their needs, take the money and take a run at Cullen Jenkins or 10 other areas. DWIL sounds great but at the end of the day, I would rather Denver fans have a complete team. They could do worse than Moreno/Jeremiah Johnson/Lance ball/Mario fannin, and perhaps bringing in a Ronnie Brown, McGahee, Wicky Williams, or even Clinton portis. Just think Fox could make it work with that better than the Broncos can go another season with no defense.

No link, but I heard on the radio that Denver is only $1 millin under the salary cap. That doesn't give them very much to sign anybody, much less what DWill is going to want. Putting Orton on the trading block will free up some cap space, but I don't think Denver will be nearly as active in free agency as many people are thinking.

I think it's fantasy wishful thinking that he leaves Carolina. 70% he stays. Carolina can spend more than any team that has a need at RB and has expressed a desire to keep him. Does he really want to uproot his entire family from a small media town with gorgeous wetather that can afford to pay him more than any other team?
My view as well. The talk has been that he was the #2 priority after Charles Johnson...who got his deal yesterday I think.DeAngelo isn't like a lot of players. His demeanor throughout his career is testament to that. I firmly believe he'd give Carlina a hometown discount. That sort of thing isn't unusual at all. And given his own somewhat unusual approach to things, I can see him giving them a discount they won't want to pass on. He's a class act.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the bidding for free agent DeAngelo Williams appears to have become a two-horse race between the Broncos and Panthers.

The Dolphins no longer look to be in serious contention. The Panthers have the ability to offer more money than Denver, so based on that we'd give Carolina the slight edge. In terms of fantasy value and production, we'd still like to see Williams sign with the Broncos. Jonathan Stewart is going to miss out on a big opportunity if D-Will returns, probably never becoming a true featured ball carrier before his rookie contract expires
The Miami BS was a beat writer named Omar Kelly who did a nice fluff piece or a wish list back in March/Apr and that became the mantra for Miami wants DWill, but they drafted a RB fairly early so I never bought into them getting DWill. The Bucs not getting DWill is going to be a low down dirty shame...pair him with Blount, Freeman/Williams/KWII, good stron gOL, perhaps signing Logan Mankins and I'm telling you the Bucs would become a powerhouse on offense.
He also said this

DeAngelo Williams - RB - Panthers Free agent DeAngelo Williams has told friends that he would be interested in playing for the Giants if they don't retain free agent Ahmad Bradshaw.

Williams is going to give the Panthers the first crack at re-signing him, but he'll have plenty of suitors. Bradshaw recently said there's a 75 percent chance he'll be back with the Giants, but other reports have that closer to 50-50. Williams' landing spot -- which we should know withing a few days -- is the most significant fantasy story of the free agency period.
Yet you don't hear squat about it on the NFL network. They're talking about Carolina and the segment is on Cam Newton and whether or not he wants Steve Smith back. WTF?!Freakin' QB's. They're the lead singers of football.

Very well said. DeAngelo is a model citizen and teammate, Carolina will try their best to keep him.

DWill is 28.
Now that is what I call doing your research.

That should get the Broncos attention
Yeah, I think this was a shot across the bow at Denver more than Carolina. Telling Denver to bring their A game on an offer to pry him away from his beloved Panthers. Notice that he said he loves the Panthers, but they have to make him an offer he can't refuse. It's not about love for anything but the Benjamin's.
This is the second post where I have read the bolded, but nowhere in the original story does it state this...
Hmmmm, the reporter makes the statement, doesn't directly quote DWill saying it, but then DWill pretty much says it too in direct quotes:

DeAngelo Williams: I want to retire a Panther

CHARLOTTE – Free agent running back DeAngelo Williams said Monday night he hopes the Carolina Panthers will make him an offer he can’t refuse so he can one day retire as a lifelong Panther.
That's the reporter reading between the lines of what he says down here:
Appearing on video chat with fans on Livestream on the eve of free agency, Williams told listeners that he’ll meet with general manager Marty Hurney on Tuesday at Bank of America Stadium to discuss his future.

The Panthers can begin talking to free agents Tuesday but can’t sign anyone until Friday under new league rules established Monday.

“I honestly and truly want to stay a Carolina Panther and they’re doing their part of keep me a Carolina Panther,” Williams said. “So I’m very excited about that. Carolina gets the first stab at me. If everything looks great, then why entertain other offers? So that’s where we stand right now.
IF everything looks great. Every time he mentions wanting to be a panther, he also mentions money.
“There are possibly a few other teams I don’t know about right now, but I’m pretty excited about where we are going as far as me and the Panthers. Wish me luck. I’m going in (to the stadium) as a Panther and I want to stay a Panther. I want to retire as Panther. But at the end of the day it’s a business.”
He wants to be a panther, but it's business. Every single time he says he wants to stay in carolina he also mentions money, that's not a guy like Joe Mauer promising to stay on the small market team no matter what. That's a guy sugar coating the following statement:Pay me enough and I'll retire here. Don't pay me enough and I'll retire someplace else. It's business.

Guess they brought the money. Since they have, does it stay a 50/50 split with Stewart? What is the philosophy of the new HC regarding use of RBs?

That's a ton of cash for someone to split time and to go until the guy is well past 30. They should've pulled a Pats or Eagles and let him go and developed someone else for much cheaper...

Well, we in the fantasy community look at Stewart on a per-game basis and say he can and should start. They are probably looking at the fact that he didn't play well for the majority of last year and that he has had nagging injuries most of his career.

What is the money?

60-40 DeAngelo I would guess. Ramblin Wreck thinks Stewart is going to be the lead dog though, he bases it on his gut which just happens to line up with his fantasy squads.

5 years 43 million with 21 guaranteed. I'd say that means 60-40 is a lock.

Stewart likely had a chance to make the Panthers feel like he could be the lead dog last year and I think he failed to do that.

8 games under 4.0 ypc, 6 over. Granted, when given over 15 carries he got 3 out of 4.

I guess they just like having a really strong RB stable.

Don't mind Ramblin Wreck, he is a hater and his opinions are always based on his own agenda.

Lots of really anxious Stewart owners up in here.
:hey:
I think DW is more of a threat to Goodson than Stewart. There is a new staff in Carolina and I bet they feed Stewart the ball.
Keep telling yourself that
LOL. I have an agenda on who starts at RB for the Panthers. I'm sure I'm the only person on Earth that thinks Stewart is more talented than DeAngelo. Based on the money DW just got, I'm probably wrong in who will start. Won't be the first time. Just like it's not the first time you are being a d-bag.

LOL. Want to post my rosters here for everyone to view? I own DW twice and Stewart once.

Did you think he was going to play for the league minimum to stay in Carolina? What is an offer he can't refuse? Well, that would depend on how bad he wanted to remain in Carolina vs. moving to a new team and city.

I guess we know now. Did he even explore offers with other teams? Or did he sit there and ask Carolina what they would pay and say "yes" when he saw how much?

Hey all y'all,

I'm in transit home today and tomorrow, so I just got to the internet to see that Williams was resigned by Carolina.

I am surprised to see Jerry Richardson spending money like water, but not surprised to see Williams take $21 million guaranteed. I guess John Fox and Denver will look elsewhere, and that Williams and Stewart will remain could-have-been top-ten fantasy backs. sigh. $21 million is "very enticing" ;)

This is just getting crazy - can't wait to see what Friday 6 PM brings...

i think Carolina has 2 of the 10 best RBs in the league
There is no question that Carolina is stacked at the position - in real NFL terms, they have two outstanding running backs. However, even with a super-run-heavy game plan I don't see a path for either guy to land among the top 10 fantasy RBs in tandem - not with the passing game they are likely to have with Cam Newton learning the pro game on the job this year, and a very green receiving corps outside of Jeremy Shockey (assuming S. Smith blows town here as of now).

I guess that puts me and the Panthers in identical situations: 2 top 10 RBs who, with the wave of a pen, become 0 top 10 RBs. Sigh. At least they seem a lot happier about it than I am.

Leads ya to pause and reflect on that old dynastry draft rule of favoring talent over situation. Situation has been choking talent here for years and it now seems will define these two guys' careers.

Once you are getting paid, less carries ain't a bad thing. Go to Denver to win titles? Please. Cash is king.
