Lots of speculation that Gibbs may make a change at QB... (1 Viewer)

I have nothing concrete here, but there are a lot of rumblings that Gibbs may finally give Brunell the hook. Bram Weinstein was saying he had a gut feeling that he'd make the change to Collins to appease Saunders and to let him have his time. Again, it was just a gut feeling from him, nothing concrete. The fact that Collins was warming up yesterday to go in with 9 minutes left I'm sure is fueling these rumors. The Eagles sat on the ball for the last 9 minutes, so it never happened, but he was warming up.

Gibbs said that if its an in game QB move then it will be Collins, but if its a new starter, then it will be Campbell. Reason is that Campbell would need a week of practice to prepare.

Gibbs also said that he won't make a QB change until they're officially out of playoff contention.

weinstein is pretty close to the team, so he would have a good view of things. i remember, however, that the skins had said at one point that collins would be the guy if they made a change during the game, but that if they had a week to prepare, they'd go with campbell.

i wonder if that's still true?

That was said a long time ago and in regards to Brunell being injured, not benched. Not sure what to think about it now, but I don't think Gibbs will stick to that statement.

rumor has it there's a youtube out there with Brunell going off on some sports talk radio guy. Zabe? (something like that) apparently asked him if he'd bench himself.

steve czaben (sp?) is a local DC sports talk guy, and also host of fox sports radio's morning drive-time show.

word has it that it was edited out of the replay.

Brunell's right. Those are stupid questions to actually ask him, especially right after a game. I'm not sure how media-types think these guys are going to answer these stupid questions. "Do you think you should be the starting QB?"

"You know, now that you mention it, I really don't think I should. I kind of suck and can't play anymore."

:loco:

I will say, though, that Brunell did not look like someone who is confident he has a starting job next week. Last week, during pregame against Dallas, Brunell was heard joking with a Dallas LB that the Cowboys needed to give the Redskins that game so Brunell can play a little longer.

I don't think Gibbs has the stomach to pull Brunell. Although this situation could look alot like it was a few years ago when Ramsey got the job. Gibbs waited until the gam pulled Brunell and put Ramsey in, I think if we hear on Sunday that Campbell is the #2 I won't be surprised at all to see Campbell in at some point of the game.

Personally I would like to see Brunell sat now and just put Campbell in now, we have 7 games left, let's see what the kid can do.

Put the kid in there and see what he can do. No better time than these last 7 games to see if Campbell has what it takes. Rivers looks great. Romo looks good. Frye, Leinert, Young and Gradkowski even look like they have potential. So while those teams are using youngsters to improve their teams futures, Gibbs is clinging to a marginal, aging QB on a team that is not playoff bound.

Quite frankly, last season's run to the playoffs was the worst thing that could have happened to this team. Brunell would have quit, or been benched. Instead he had hope for great things, and came back to another poor offensive year.

Then they need a personnel man. Gibbs has proven that he can't do this part of the job. Look at the huge number of former Skins that play play well for other teams. They also had this choice three years ago... Betts/Bailey or Portis/flunky CB. The first would clearly be better for this team. Imagine if they had Bailey shutting down half the field, and Betts power running. After running Bobby Bethard out of town, Gibbs also illustriously drafted...Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook and Desmond Howard.

For God's sake, give the personnel duties to someone that knows what they are doing. Cerrato and Gibbs are without a doubt the worst personnel combo in the NFL. I'd rather have Millen.

Gibbs wasn't around for Shuler or Westbrook, they were Casserly and Norv Turner picks. Desmond Howard was all Gibbs though.

Do we, as fans, have an idea of what Campbell can do? No. Does that mean the coaches are in the same boat? No. This idea that he needs to play so "we can see what he can do" is moronic. They see him all the time. They know what he can do and, so far, have determined he can do less than Brunell in terms of winning games. Maybe that will change this week. Maybe it won't. But, the idea that everyone is just in the dark about what Campbell can do until he plays is not true. At some point, he needs to play. Whether that's week 10 or week 14 of his second year or even week 1 of his third year really isn't going to make a big difference.

Spoken like a true fan. This is the same type of thinking as "Let's lose a bunch of games and get a good draft pick." Ever notice how no team ever has this philosophy. How fast would players leave this team if the organization had the mindset that going to the playoffs last year was a bad thing? I can't imagine anyone has ever interviewed with a professional sports organization and said, "I'm hoping we suck for a while. We'll get some good draft picks and, by not making the playoffs, we'll have a good excuse to cut certain players."

No, they really didn't have that choice. Champ Bailey was leaving. He was not going to play for the Redskins.

I disagree. Yes - the coaches know a lot more about what Campbell can do than we the fans do. But no QB's have been able to show in practice only, having never played in the NFL, how good of an NFL QB they will be. It takes some time in there learning at full game speed and against a variety of opponents and different schemes to see how good they are/can become. So - there is some validity to the notion of "let's get him in there and see what he can do."I think the time is now to start seeing what he can do and planning ahead for next year. Campbell can get some experience which might make him better than Brunell would be at the beginning of next year, even if Campbell isn't there already. Or if he sucks and doesn't improve, again, better we start finding out this year instead of early next year. Oh - and I agree with fatness - if they put in Collins I will be extremely pissed. I do believe the former Gibbs statement on this - and in the case of a benching because the season is all but over as opposed to an injury, it's even more likely to be true. No point trying to see if we can go 6-10 with Collins instead of 5-11 with Campbell. Most QBs need some experience in the NFL to get better. Holding the clipboard and taking reps with the 2nd team only takes you so far.

I agree that the coaches have a much better idea of what each QB is physically capable of but so many former players also make similar comments that it leads me to believe, as well as it being intuitively obvious, that there is such a huge difference between practice and live game action that it can be difficult to assess what a player can do once he lines up under center in a real game. I also think Gibbs is not making this decision strictly based on what each player is physically capable of doing. Beyond the physical differences between Campbell and Brunell Gibbs must decide whether making a switch at QB will have a deeper mental aspect on the team, perhaps causing factioning in the locker room as some players rally around Brunell and others support Campbell (ala Flutie/Rob Johnson in Buffalo), this type of infighting could have a bigger impact in the W-L column than the physical differences between Campbell and Brunell. And, although I don't think Brunell would be this type of player, there is also the concern that Gibbs would lose Brunell entirely making him a risky proposition if Campbell goes down with an injury.

If Gibbs starts Collins I'll go #### on Gibb's porch.
I'd like to thank you guys for conveying this to Gibbs and causing the change to Campbell instead. Gibbs remembers the last time, the flaming bag, the stinky foot...................Seriously, this is the best move for Washington to make. 7 games to play will give Campbell what he needs --- playing time to start developing or start bombing out.

I am very happy. I still think we need a GM.
