Police in Ramapo, N.Y., detailed the class-E felony rape charge they levied against Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor on Thursday afternoon.
Town supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence said that police believe Taylor committed the statutory rape of the 16-year-old victim who St. Lawrence said was "delivered" to a Holiday Inn in Ramapo by Rasheed Davis at about 1 a.m. Police in New York City arrested Davis on Thursday morning, part of a string of events that led police to Taylor.
Police said the victim was a "runaway" from New York City who, after he alleged encounter with Taylor in the hotel room, was able to get help from her uncle to separate her from Davis after he brought her back to New York City. "She was able to communicate with her uncle who had reported her missing," St. Lawrence said.
Taylor was set to be arraigned later on Thursday. Police said he paid the victim $300, which she then turned over to Davis.
The victim suffered an injury to her face, but St. Lawrence made clear that police do not suspect that Taylor was involved in that crime. "The injury to the victim's face occurred prior to her entering the room at the Holiday Inn," he said.
Added Ramapo police chief Peter Brower "He was very concerned about being accused of injuring the victim."
Brower was not able to say if Taylor was aware that the victim was underage. But he added, "ignorance is not an excuse."
Rape in the third degree could bring a sentence of up to four years if Taylor were convicted. He was also charged with a misdemeanor count of solicitation of a prostitute, which Brower said could bring up to a year in jail.
St. Lawrence said that Taylor, who was alone in the hotel room when police confronted him at about 4 a.m., was "very cooperative."
Taylor's attorney, Kenneth Gribetz, said earlier Thursday that was innocent.
