M. Barber 13-75-1 at Half time... (1 Viewer)

I would hope people would agree that when a team has a RB who is superior but they split carries, it is normally to keep him fresh both for the end of the game, and for the season. This is preseason. The plan was for Barber to only play the first half. They didn't need to keep him fresh for the 2nd half, because he wasn't going to play it. He's only getting a half a game of work, that isn't enough it's going to wear him out for the season, so again, the normal motivation for splitting carries wasn't there. We don't know if Phillips was rolling out his new single RB gameplan as the OP suggests, or if he wanted to get Barber a solid half of work to test his conditioning, or if there was just no reason to split carries now as Jones will probably get a lot of work in game 4. In short, I don't think it seems like a similar enough situation to the regular season that we want to read too much out of that aspect of it.
 Most of what happens in preseason football doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. It is nice to see your players do well but the most important thing is they NOT GET HURT. Other than that I wouldn't base too much on these games...

we already know Barber will put up numbers at home against the Texans...what we don't know is if his limited touches against good defenses on the road will be enough to make him worthy of his ADP.Personally I think he's ranked about right...I have him as the #9 RB.
What's his road/home splits for touches? And how do we know his touches will be limited?Every coach in the NFL would love to have two great RBs, keep them both fresh, and wear down a D. However, when the game is on the line, and you want to win the 2nd guy, who isn't as good, usually gets lost in the shuffle. The design of RBBC is on the increase, but heavy load RBs still very much exist. If the Cowboys are in a close game, on the road, and Felix struggles, they won't hesitate to ride Barber. Is that the plan? Not really. But preseason plans usually go out the window when you need to win a game.If it's a good D, on the road, I'd guess Barber is likely to see his touches increase. Rookies make mistakes. You can't afford mistakes on the road against a good D. If Felix goes 4 for 8 on a series, he's going to see less touches in a tight game on the road as the game progresses. Getting Felix experience is secondary to the Cowboys winning. Now if the Cowboys blow people out, Felix will get a larger load. In a tough game, on the road, I'd bump Barber up.

good post, but aren't you kind of assuming that Dallas won't "need" Barber to be a workhorse in order to get to the superbowl? I like Dallas as the favorite, but that division is no cakewalk. clinching a playoff spot, clinching the division, home field advantage, etc. the plan might be to rest him and keep him fresh, but when they have to run out the clock in the 4th quarter of week 15 and Barber already has 27 carries in the game, you really think they're going to stick Jones in there?i didn't really adjust anything based on last night, i've still got Barber for 260 carries and Jones for 140, but Jones has to play better than he did last night if he wants to be that guy that keeps MBIII "fresh".

200 carries in 10 games with a season ending injury sounds about right.
I never wish an injury on anybody. I think that Barber is a player similar to Shockey always wanting to deliver a finishing shot. That is why Shockey is banged up all the time. If Barber can learn when to get down or out of bounds, he will have a better shot of finishing the season. I also think as far as dynasty, those miles will be city miles. not highway miles.

i don't get the "likely to get injured" argument. don't RBs most commonly get injured cutting, or getting dragged down from behind, or taking shots on the knees? i don't recall a lot of RBs getting a concussion running over somene. his running style might shorten his career overall, but in any given week, i don't see the big risk.

No, I don't think I made that assumption. Note that I didn't share my opinion on Barber at all. I'm just addressing how much (or how little) one should read out of the preseason game when the main reasons for splitting carries in the regular season aren't necessarily there.

sorry, misread your post. too early :X

On behalf of all the other "Haters" here who think there is not much to read into this pre season game. Here is a blurb from Nick Eatman column this monrning.

===================================================================

After the game, I got a chance to ask Felix about getting unleashed more when the season starts. If a look says it all, you should've seen the ear-to-ear grin on Felix when he answered. Safe to say, the Cowboys haven't scratched the surface just yet.

"It's the preseason right now, we're just getting the basics down," Jones said. "When the season starts, we'll get down to business."

Speaking of business, let's hope it includes a kickoff return, or three - each game.

Maybe Phillips is just laying low on this one, but I just don't understand the logic. Now, I'm not sure if he's going to be a great running back in the pros. It's safe to say he was a pretty good "tailback" in college.

But he was a phenomenal kickoff returner. A two-time All-American returning kicks with five career touchdowns in that area.

Why wouldn't you want a dynamic player to do what he does best? And if the answer is a fear of getting a guy hurt on special teams, then to me, special teams needs more emphasis.

Personally, I wouldn't mind having a guy back there who could take it the distance at any moment. Seems to work for the Bears. Not saying Felix Jones is Devin Hester, but it's safe to say that Jones did way more in college in the return game than Hester.

"Hey, if that's what they want to do, I respect their decision," Jones said of not returning kickoffs now. "Hopefully, I'll get a few soon."

And that might be the case now with Isaiah Stanback going down with a shoulder injury. Last year's returner, Miles Austin, is out a few more weeks with a knee injury. Seems like a good time to get Felix Jones a crack or two at kickoffs, especially with just one preseason game to go.

"I'm not worried right now," Jones said. "I'm confident in the coaches. They have a plan for me."

Whatever it is, it seems the Cowboys know the answer. They just don't feel the need to tell us, or the rest of the league, right now.

Jones looked terrible last night. And that Fumble he had was a joke.

MBIII will be in everyone's top 5 RBs next yr... unless some injury comes along.

Oh yeah... I'm a Dynasty owner of MBIII in 3 out of 7 Dynasties.
