I thought the players rumored in the Florida deal were better. As for the players in this deal isnt LaRoche the only good prospect their? Moss is a non prospect, Hansen sucks, and I dont know anything about Morris.
considering bay has a year left on a pretty cheap contract and, you know, is sane, he's a much more valuable trade piece than manny. the real stories here are that boston made out like bandits, the pirates have no clue what they are doing, and andruw jones can now officially be called the worst FA signing ever.
Moss could be like an Xavier Nady type player, so yeah.Hansen hasn't lived up to expectations...but I mean, giving these two, and ManRam, AND paying the rest of his contract this year, pretty much shows they were desperate to dump him. Bay's nice, and I'm happy to have him on board, but come on.
Bay is 7 years younger than ManRam,it's a decent short and long term deal for Boston
Moss might be a decent 4th OFer on a good team, imo. Hansen was unbelievable and nearly unhittable coming out of college. Then he sucked. Then he revamped his entire delivery. Now his suckiness has a different look. I guess he could get it back, though.
I know, and I posted in the other thread that I think Bay is a very good player.But, he is only under contract for one more year, and I have significant concerns with his knee. He has a condition that will never get better. I don't mind if he never steals 20 bases/year again, but nonetheless, this is a concern. Lastly, some players don't necessarily start out gangbusters in Boston (JD Drew, ahem) and this is coming up on the pennant stretch. Obviously a deal needed to be made, and I'm not altogether unhappy with the outcome, would have just preferred dealing Manny alone (and paying this years salary I suppose), and not have to throw in two major league ready prospects.

Tend to pretty much agree.....but you really need to take into account that Boston was in a no-win situation. Sometimes your hand gets forced, and you do the best you can. I've seen worse. The two prospects given up were not Lester, Ellsbury, or Buchholz, so didn't really sell the farm on this one.Winner

I love Manny, but it was time to go. Not sure you can get a read on how bad things were from where you are. Given that the situation was untenable, I'll take the 75-80 cents on the dollar they got. I really don't think Moss and Hansen will amount to anything more than OK major leaguers. I guess if BOS paid a lot of cash, that sucks. But I don't really care about that unless it impacts Boston's ability to get players.noWinner

I agree, I think it was a steep price for Bay. Its easy to feel better about it just thinking that it hopefully was also some addition by subtraction. There is no question the Sox clubhouse is breathing a sigh of relief that they can put this behind them and move forward. Bay is not Manny, but he's no slouch and they have him next year for reasonable money. They don't have to worry about LF in the FA market and they'll have all that Manny and Schilling money coming off the books to spend on FA pitchers. Furthermore, Moss will never be an all star caliber player. Hansen has potential to be very good, but he just as easily could remain inconsistent. It's certainly a good deal for next season and an ok deal for this season if you factor in the addition by subtraction theory. As far as this year goes, Manny or no Manny the sox chances at another WS depend on their bullpen and the arm of Josh Beckett getting it turned around.

If the Red Sox make the playoffs and go all the way I'll eat my words but you just traded away any shot you had in '08 instead of just letting things pass over as they always do with Manny. Red Sox fans would have forgiven him after he hit a 3 run homer to win the division. Better hope the old Ortiz comes back, JD Drew is due to break something.I love Manny, but it was time to go. No thanks.And no question he HAS given the Sox more than they'll ever get out of Bay, but Manny is no longer the great run producer that he was a few years back. Its not like the sox lineup is awful right now. Then there is the whole addtion by subtraction thing. No doubt he was becoming a huge distraction and it was looking like it was only going to get worse. I'm sure a phantom injury was just around the corner like when he quit and went home for the last month of the season a few years back.
