Marvel Cinematic Universe - Fantastic Four - No Homework Required (2 Viewers)

Starting a rewatch of the MCU with my almost 9 year old. Watched the original Captain America yesterday (trying to do a modified timeline watch). Trying to remember if anything specific might be “too much” for a 9 year old, but seeing the original red skull yesterday (with his “rip off face” scene), can’t remember much that would be scarier than that.
I’ve been rewatching with my 8 and 12 year old over the past 6 months or so. I agree with earlier posts that even the bad entries have held up pretty well. We did the chronological story order with the exception of Captain Marvel which we just watched leading into Infinity War up next. It’s been a fun ride and even my wife has been into it. Ready for their minds to be blown!

Its amazing what happened to the Marvel universe. Few years ago I couldnt wait between movies.....now I really dont even follow any more. I know phase 1 had the best characters but more than that they had such a great build up - this time around its just all over the place. Is it over saturation like Star Wars, bad movies/stories, uninteresting characters?

Since end game the only movie I really liked was the GOG finale - Im also a big Deadpool/Wolverine fan so looking forward to this one - but other than that whats to look forward?
It is interesting how time can distort memories.

Phase 1 was chalk full of clunkers for many long time fans. Many hated Hulk, IM2 and were, at best, kind of "meh" on Thor.

After End Game, my favorite two movies were Spider Man No Way Home, and GOG 3. The rest kind of all blended together. I was not a huge fan of the multiverse and really did not like Kang as the big bad. The fact that they still have not fixed this (Kang Dynasty is still on the schedule) is amazing to me.
I’m not sure Hulk (awful, both of them) counts as phase 1. I think the Thanos phase started in earnest with Captain America. That’s where the Tesseract/infinity stones started. I watched End Game again this weekend and man, it hurt to realize how bad and all over the place Marvel has been since then aside from GotG 3.

I'm wondering if taking my 15 year old to Deadpool and Wolverine would be a bad idea. She's seen all the MCU movies up until now. I don't know if she's seen the other Deadpool movies, but if she has its probably been the neutered TV versions. She loves Venom from the non-MCU side.

Yeah that would be a personal judgment call. It will be way more "rough" than any other MCU without question though. If you are comfortable with her seeing the first 2 uncut Deadpool movies, then it will be fine. Disney gave him wide berth but I'd be hard pressed to believe it would be "rougher" than the first 2.

Good point. I always think of Spider-Man separately even though he’s now in Marvel MCU just because of all the older non-Disney ones. I’d say all of the “Avenger” ones after End Game, but the last Thor, Black Widow and Doctor Strange were rough. Rewatching End Game really did make me feel worse about the after End Game movies (overall).

I actually enjoyed Black Widow. To me the problem was more about its release date than the movie itself. Civil War and Infinity War were on tv yesterday. Had Black Widow been slotted in there as it was set in the timeline, then I think it would have been better received.

Hoping Shang-Chi gets a sequel or some additional screen time in other movies.

Yeah I have Shang Chi in the "Really Liked" category. I thought Black Widow was "OK" as well as the last Dr. Strange movie. The Eternals and the Marvels I just can't get motivated to watch and don't feel like I've missed much on it. This latest phase had some good to passable movies, but certainly had more misses than all other phases put together IMO.

You may be referring to Phase 4, but we are in Phase 5 now. There have only been three movies released so far in this phase. Ant Man 3, GOG 3, and The Marvels.

I was referring to everything post EndGame going back to @stbugs post, but you are correct I should have said "phases" instead of "phase"

The Eternals was, uh well, not good. Some decent characters but just didn't fit in well the way they were introduced and "instructed not to interfere" despite being around forever. Also the ending leaves a lot of questions that so far have not been acknowledged or seen again in any other movie.

I liked the Marvels. Was just good clean fun. Nothing special but what you need in a comic book movie sometimes. I think it gets underserved hate because of Brie Larson vs the fanboys, the overriding letdown/saturation overall post Endgame, and the do I need to watch D+ shows to understand? One of the better MCU movies? No, but fun regardless.

Dr Strange had some good moments. GoTG3 was great, as was No Way Home.

I just think the MCU is suffering from a lack of cohesiveness. The way they built the separate characters into one universe was epic. They seemed to have now separated everyone with very little meaningful crossovers and connectiveness. We'll see if they can bring it back together, starting with DP

I agree (I'm gonna stop the quoting :) ) I watched 20 minutes of the Eternals while riding my spin bike and was just bored with it. I wanted to watch Ms. Marvel on Disney Plus before watching The Marvels. I watched the first 2 or 3 before D+ was up, and it was pretty good but not great.

I have no idea but it's hard for me to fathom that Deadpool is going to be more than a one-off. I know they will want to keep going back to that well, but he is a fourth wall and universe buster. It is great fun to watch on the side, but not sure how well he really integrates into what they are trying to do.

The Marvels wasn’t just Brie/Fanboys. I personally liked Ms. Marvel and her family but the other two were meh and for some reason they couldn’t make the villain a real villain. Same thing in Falcon and Winter Soldier. They had to try and redeem/excuse the email villains even though they did terrible things. Ragnarock had Hela as just plain evil, but they wouldn’t do the same thing here even though they showed them murder people. Just didn’t work for me.

I may be one of the few, but Shang Chi was enjoyable until the end with the How to Train Your Dragon battle and the comic relief playing a pivotal role in saving the world.

You aren't alone.

So quick update on the chronological viewing order: I made the mistake of waiting to show Antman and the Wasp until after Infnity War, which we watched last night. Now my 8 year old and wife are refusing to watch Antman becuase they just want to get on to Endgame to see how it gets worked out. My kid pitched a fit and screamed "I'm not watching stupid Antman!" I tried to explain that I had to wait a year to find out what happened after Infitiy War, but the kids don't get it in the streaming world. If i had it to do all over again, I would have watched Antman before Infinity war and saved the credit sequence until after Infinity War, which is what I did with Captain Marvel.

Oh well, minds were indeed blown by Infinity War. I can't wait to see there faces after the opening of Endgame...

Phase 5 makes no sense right now. There’s No good reason for BP2 to end P4.

So quick update on the cronological viewing order: I made the mistake of waiting to show Antman and the Wasp until after Infnity War, which we watched last night.

I love AM and AM2 but yeah that was a strategic error.

Still looking forward to Deadpool and the trailers are out for the next MCU movie and show!

AGATHA ALL ALONG Trailer

Captain America: Brave New World Trailer

RED HULK APPEARS AT THE END OF THE CAP TRAILER!!!!!!!
Just to make sure I understand the spoiler...is Red Hulk the "angry" version of Harrison Ford (Ross)?
That is my understanding.

(Also put spoiler tags in case anyone was trying to avoid the trailer and its contents lol)

Also leads into some of the speculated story for the Thunderbolts movie

It did, you're good.
just giving a reason for why originally I did it since it is in the trailer.

Went last night as well. Beautiful Chaos. Definitely an up and down rollercoaster of emotion and fun. IT was what you expect from Deadpool.

Based on Paradox's plan, I did have to wonder where the God of Stories was and how he didn't even get a mention

Deadpool and the Wolverine is incredibly fun to watch. But, it is absolutely relentless with it's pacing, while hilarious and fun the pacing was such that I can't honestly say if it was a great movie for the MCU. It seems to bring the whole multiverse/timelines issues in line but, I'm going to need to rewatch it about 50 times to pick up on everything that happened.

Still, it is an incredibly fun movie and absolutely worth watching.

Just got back, we all loved it. God does it reward those of us who watch a ton of movies!!

The Johnny Storm reveal was <chef kiss>

When they allowed Deadpool to crap all over the horrible MCU multiverse movies coupled with the grand finale scene, I thought/hoped they were going to let Cassandra do something to destroy the multiverse for good to reset things going forward but sadly, Kang curse is still hovering over the franchise.

I tried to stay away from spoilers but even saying that I was impressed how they were able to keep some of it quiet and off social media during the filming of.

As an old school "DVD extras" watcher, the scenes during the credits warmed my heart.

I loved that they were able to get so many original actors back in their original roles. The only two that caught my eye that were not OG's were Juggernaught (which they joked about) and Lady Deathstrike.

I have to go back and rewatch the very first scene Wolverine is in during XMen 1, but I think the bar scene in this movie when Deadpool finds the Wolverine he finally uses, looked extremely familiar to me....

Not sure it qualifies as OG but Taylor Lautner played Gambit in the first Wolverine movie. Channing Tatum was worlds better in D&W "Do you come with subtitles?" : 🤣

A lot of people don't know this but Tatum actually played Gambit first, even if it did not make it to the screen. Tatum filmed a scene for XMen 2 as Gambit, but it got edited out fairly late in the process. Tatum was also the first choice as Gambit for Wolverine Origins but had a conflict with the GI Joe sequel and was replaced with Lautner

Interesting fact, sincerely I mean that, but does it really change what ended up on screen?

I don't think I understand the question.

I was not commenting on what ended up on the screen. I was just commenting that the actor who played the role in this movie was tied to the role in an earlier movie.

Won't type any spoilers, but there were Easter Eggs galore! Really enjoyed it! Man it is over the top with the language though. Oddly, the violence doesn't bother me :)

My wife and I haven't kept up with all the MCU movies and shows, but we did watch Logan last night and we are so glad we did because that explained so much when we saw the movie today.

Honestly, I need to see it again because there was so much going on in several scenes that I would focus my attention on one part of the screen and you can just catch a blur of what is happening elsewhere. The bus fight scene (no spoiler there) had so much action and comedy kills, I couldn't process it all.

It was amazing!! Theater was pretty full for an early showing this morning. I was planning on going to see Twisters again on Tuesday, but I think I may just go see this again,

Lmaooooo RDJ won that Oscar and then said it’s time for more money. Can’t wait.
Soooooo. No more Kang?
Yea sounds like it’s totally done. They’re doing Secret Wars the year after Doomsday too.

Who are even the Avengers right now? I know the new Captain America and I guess Spiderman (???) and I truly can’t think of anybody else. Maybe Dr Strange? Seems like everyone from the original movies is done.

I love that they are bringing back the Russo's and REALLY like that they finally dumped Kang.

I don't really get the Downey casting unless he is going to stay in mask the entire time (which given the money they are spending, I doubt)?

Obviously he is a great actor but it is going to seem really weird watching him play another role in the same series of movies and every one kind of ignoring that he looks just like Tony Stark unless they some how found a way to write that in.
