Maurile's Tip of the Week (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure I'll have one of these every week. But I have one right now, so here it is.

Aside from avoiding stupidly making completely horrible lineups, the surest way to make money at DFS is finding good overlays.

A good overlay is one that fills 90% or less. A great overlay is one that fills 75% or less. A fantastic overlay is one that fills 67% or less. An insanely awesome overlay is one that fills 50% or less.

I'm going to tell you how to find fantastic overlays at certain sites.

There are a few sites -- StarsDraft and FantasyDraft are two of them -- that offer guaranteed, three-person, winner-take-all contests. These sites typically have a bunch of contests that don't fill up all the way -- their 100-person contests, for example, will only get 89 entrants or whatever.

What's special about their three-person contests is that they very often attract only two entrants. That's only 67% filled, which is fantastic. (See above.) If you see a contest that already has two of the three slots filled, don't enter it. You'll fill it up and there won't be an overlay. The key is that everyone else knows this as well. Or at least most do. So if you can be the second person who signs up, you can generally count on other people to avoid being the third. They should rather go be the 90th person in the 100-person contest than be the third person in a three-person contest.

Some of the guaranteed three-person contests do fill up, but in my experience, less than half of them do. With even just a 50% chance of getting such a nice overlay, the EV is positive even for the average DFS player. (And we're all above average here, right?)

So here's the strategy I'm advocating:

1. Look for guaranteed three-person contests.

2. Be the first or second person to enter.

3. Avoid stupidly making a completely horrible lineup.

4. Profit.

Great advice! There's tons of overlay to be had on the smaller sites.

I also think that if you are a lower bankroll player the smaller sites offer more attractive GPPs. Granted, you won't win $100K on your $5 entry, but you won't have to beat out tens of thousands of other lineups for that top payout.

I do have a few questions about the 3 man contest overlays. On StarsDraft I see a few available right now at the $5, $10 and $20 entry levels. Is it common at these levels that some idiot won't come around to be the third? Or, do I have to enter at a higher entry level?

Yea I do this quite often. If theres a high stakes 8 man 50/50 with 6 people entered and all 6 are really good regs, I immediately jump in....I will make it so that theres now 7 good regs and nobody except a fish would ever look at the field and decide its +EV to play- so we either get a fish or get overlay!

Guaranteed 3 mans take this strategy to an entire different level. I don't play on the smaller sites, but I 100% echo MT's advice regarding those 3 mans. If you're looking to build your bankroll, this is probably the best thing you could be doing right now.

Just scroll through the lobby looking for guaranteed contests that are still largely unfilled shortly before they start.

With NFL contests (at FanDuel and DraftKings), they will tend to fill up at the last second no matter how unfilled they look a few minutes beforehand. But the college contests generally don't have the same last-minute crazy flurry of entries.

For NFL, it is much easier to find overlays on smaller sites.

On the topic, the Conference Showcase is looking at a ton of overlay on Fanduel right now. With about 4 and a half hours left most of the tournaments have been up for days and are still only 1/3 filled. Seems like a very tough slate to me though.

I believe on DK, if there are multiple contests of the same type (like, '$1 Double Up, 1000 max entrants, Sunday Only'), they combine unfilled ones into one big contest. i.e. if there are three $1 DU Sunday Only, and one is 300/1000 filled, another is 400/1000 filled, and the last is 200/1000 filled, then they mash all those together into a 900/1000 filled in the last minute before it starts.
If they are Guaranteed payout I don't believe legally they could do that as it would be reducing the payout. I have found very few overlays on DK(even for college) but occasional catch one. Had a m-th triple up this week that was 42 players out of 57.

The overlay on StrasDraft is absolutely absurd right now. Their $10 tournament paid out 46% of the field last week I believe and they decided to substantially increase the size this week.

I just signed up for DraftPot (here's a rough draft of the IVC with some kinks to be worked out -- it's weird because some players have a salary of $0, which throws off the value and H-value calculations).

There are some good overlays. But it looks like most of the guaranteed three-person contests are filling up. I guess that's a good sign, in a way, because it means there are a lot of bad player there. (If bad players are filling the last spots, it's self-evident that there are bad players there. If good players are filling the last spots, it's because they know their opponents are bad -- so either way, there are bad players there.)

Starsdraft had some huge overlays today. Of course the system is down for maintenance so who knows how I'm doing.

Thank you!

4 entries in the big contest - won $80 (56th of 10k), $25, $16, and $15

1 entry in the landry - won $12 (112th of 2k)

1 entry in the 2pt conversion - won $4 (3rd of 2250). Hurts this wasn't a large gpp

1 freeroll - won $5 (9th of 3400). Hurst this wasn't a gpp

1 entry in 25 cent 1st quarter - won 0.75 (68th of 2200)

10 teamer - finished 5th for nothing

6 teamer double up - 1st place for $3.70

Netted about $120.

Their gpp payouts are very flat.

This is a great tip, thanks Maurile. So StarsDraft, FantasyDraft and DraftPot are the three main ones to look into currently?

This is my first year doing DFS, and I'm only on FD so my experience is limited, but I entered a $5 Thu Mini Rush last night and in the last 5-10 minutes prior to kickoff well over 400 entries! 1149 spots, and just over 700 entries at 8:15, then kickoff comes and it's full. Is that realistic/common???

Not uncommon on fanduel. A lot harder to find overlay there.

Curious to know if anyone has tried this yet? I signed up on FantasyDraft yesterday and entered $1/$2/$5/$10/$25 3 man, winner take all MLB tournies. I was the first person in each time. Every contest I entered filled up. Not sure what to make of it. On one hand, I might say it's because I'm a newbie and they thought they could beat me. On the other hand, one of the guys that I was up against in every contest made a very poor decision on one of his pitchers IMO (even though he won). It struck me as a beginner mistake. So maybe it's that it got filled up by other fish like me :)

Very common on both the big sites, FD and DK. Seldom any significant overlays on either site.

Thanks. Thanks to jandyt as well. Just seemed like that was a bunch of entries in a very short period of time. Live and learn I guess.
