Mayock's preliminary 2012 rookie draft Top 5 (1 Viewer)

Cornerbacks

1. Morris Claiborne*, LSU

2. Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama

3. Alfonzo Dennard, Nebraska

4. Leonard Johnson, Iowa State

5. Dre Kirkpatrick*, Alabama

Notes: Mayock presumably ranked Jenkins based on his 2010 tape at Florida, because buzz among small-school insiders is that he was not dominant in one year at North Alabama. Mayock has compared Johnson to Kansas City's Brandon Flowers for his highly competitive play. Claiborne won the 2011 Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back and is a consensus top-five player. Kirkpatrick is ranked relatively low here, perhaps due to his recent marijuana arrest.

If that was true then you would have to figure Jenkins would be lower as well.

:goodposting: from Wiki:

Janoris Jenkins (born October 29, 1988) is an American football cornerback. He previously attended the University of Florida, but was dismissed from the team due to misconduct.

Jenkins became just the second true freshman in school history to start at cornerback on opening day. He was named to College Football News and Sporting News′ Freshman All-American team.[1]

Jenkins attended Pahokee High School, where he was recognized as a first-team Class 2B all-state selection and a Parade magazine All-American as a senior in 2008. Rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, Jenkins was listed as the sixth-best cornerback prospect in the nation.

On June 1, 2009, Jenkins was arrested near a bar by Gainesville Police for fighting and resisting arrest after punching a man in the head around 2 AM. Police were forced to use a taser on Jenkins after fighting escalated. When asked why the fight started, Jenkins told police it was because he thought someone was going to steal the gold chain around his neck.[2]

On April 23, 2011, Jenkins was cited by a Gainesville police officer and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. He was cited for the same violation in January 2011, and paid a $316 fine. He was arrested in May 2009 during a downtown Gainseville fight that resulted in probation and community service. On April 26, 2011, he was dismissed by the Florida Gators football team, due to his second drug related arrest in 3 months.[3]

There must be a lot of weed in Alabama.

You've got to find some way to kill the time during the offseason. What else do they all have to look forward to other than college football in that state?

Jenkins weed problems were in Gainesville, FL. I can assure you that there is a lot of weed there.

Weed must be a performance enhancing drug for cornerbacks. Kirkpatrick, Jenkins and Cliff Harris were all ranked high and then they were all busted for getting high.

Vontaze Burfict has bust written all over him
This is someone's name?Based on the blurb he has draft day slider written all over him - and those guys never contribute. A true bust would be drafted top 10, most likely as a pass rusher. Seems that position is about as risky as they come.

I'd love the Chargers to take a chance on him. It seems to be that his rage is a tad overblown and could be reined in. Not in the 1st, but I'd be fine trading up in the 2nd.

I believe McShay and Kiper both have him as a top 25 player on their big boards. If not quite that high, he's considered a 1st rounder by most.IMO, any 1st round pick that isnt at least a starter or significant contributor for at least 5 years in the NFL is a bust. I dont think you need to be a top 10 pick.

Reiff over Kalil??WOW!!
I know that seems surprising since Kalil has bee the consensus top tackle by most. But is Mayocks ranking really shocking? I can't imagine many people have watched a ton of film on BOTH guys, seeing as how they play in different regions. I know I certainly haven't seen enough of these guys to say anything with emphasis, but I'm sure Mayocks has. That's one of the things that gets to me about the draft...about 99% of people react as though they have a real sense of each player directly, when the truth is all but a very few -- ahem -- obsessive fans really have a good sense on more than a handful of players they see on a regular basis.

Very true...I did have the chance to watch each team about 3 times and it just looked like Kalil dominated each game while Reiff was just solid...but it was the first time that I have seen anyone have Kalil not far and away the #1.

I could be very wrong.... But I think that Burfict could very easily be the steal of the draft. I think that he is an elite talent, who's range and desire will make him thrive in the NFL. He is a game changer, and could instantly change the dynamic of a team's defense.I am hoping that the Eagles draft him, because I think his presence and range will instantly upgrade all 3 LB positions. But sadly, that is why they won't draft him.

I have only seen Kalil play once or twice, but I have seen Reiff a handful of times and he never struck me as the #1 tackle in a draft class type of talent.

:thumbup:And I'm not saying he should be. I haven't seen much of him.I'm just preempting the inevitable sabre-rattling we all fall prey to even though most of us have only seen a fair amount of one or two players at each of the key position battles.

I know Mayock uses NFL sources to mold his rankings....but how could Kirkpatrick possibly be the #5 cornerback? Even if he drops from the arrest issue...still can't see a situation where he drops below 4 others.

I swear these guys just post rankings that are all over the place so they can go back at some point and say, "see I once had player X rated as my number 3 CB." I've watched Dre for 2 seasons now where I looked at at least 5 games in each. The dude NEVER had any business being ranked bellow 3 at CB. He should easily be ranked #2 IMO. It should have been that way for a long time now.

Mayock updated his top five at every position two days ago.

Mayock has turned into such a puppet

-Chandler Jones goes from the fringe of his top 5 DE's to a top 10 pick

-And Fletcher Cox

-Gilmore wasn't even in his top 5 CB's, now he's a top 10 pick?

-McClellin? I don't know. He didn't rank him in his top 5 either

-Lamar Miller was ranked above Doug Martin, now he's 82nd and Martin's 17th?

-Chris Givens was the #5 WR, now there are 12 WR's in his top 100 and none of them are Givens

-My own gripe about the Cleveland QB situation - first he says Colt is a franchise QB (vs. Pittsburgh in December - his last game of the year), then he says the Browns have to take Tannehill, now he's saying Weeden.

He used to have a mind of his own, but now he just parrots what others tell him.

People can't change their mind? - he's on the record 24/7, cut him some slack.

If it were just a couple of isolated cases, yes, but this is a laundry list. As a general rule, if your board looks much different at the end of April than it did at the end of January you're doing it wrong.
