McNabb to be released (1 Viewer)

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Vikings are set to release QB Donovan McNabb on Thursday. We've seen speculation on this ever since the Broncos granted Kyle Orton his release. McNabb will be subject to the waivers process with $1.5 million remaining on his 2011 salary. He would certainly have interest in playing for his hometown Bears, who have a higher waiver claim than the Texans. We're not sure he'd be much of an upgrade on Caleb Hanie, however.

Please pick him up Chicago...please please please.

-signed, fans of anyone who gets to play the Bears.

Yeah because Caleb Haney is soooooo much better
More mobile.McNabb is a statue...put him in Martz's offense and he is just a sitting duck. That and he can't throw the ball worth a crap.Neither are great...but wow McNabb has been bad recently and would get destroyed in that offense.

Seems like I'm the only one, but he really hasn't been that bad. He was on a terrible team with no real receiving threat - especially at the start of the season - and still posted decent numbers. He's always thrown passes into the dirt on occasion, football circles seem to love to key in on that. Does he still want to work hard? I don't know. Does he listen to the coaches? I don't know. I do know that his play on the field this season has been much better than people want to believe and he's definitely been better than some of the quarterbacks who have been starting NFL games this season.

per Brad Biggs, Bears beat reporter:

NFL source tells me that no team claimed Donovan McNabb off waivers from #Vikings

Also seeing that Sage Rosenfels was claimed by Minny to fill McNabb's spot.

As a Texans fan I'm pretty disappointed we didn't put in a waiver claim. I've never been a McNabb fan, but if TJ Yates doesn't pan out then I have a hard time believing McNabb isn't a better option than Clemens or Delhomme. Plus, he played in Shanahan's offense last year so he has experience with our system. WTF Texans? I'm hoping we just had insider info that no one else put a claim in and now we can sign him for less money.

Not so sure about that. What made McNabb a good QB was his athleticism. Not his accuracy, not his football smarts, not his work ethic, not his ability to read defenses. His athleticism is gone, and thus I don't think he has much to offer to the NFL anymore. And he was terrible in the Shanahan offense last year, so that may be all that Kubiak needed to know.

I think you're being pretty harsh and shorting the man... McNabb was athletic.. but let's not get crazy, he had alot of skill also.

I also dont think he was that great of an athlete in terms of the sport as a whole...position wise eh, def. above avg but I would never say his athleticism alone made him good.

I watched him play for 11 years. He was an above-average QB because he could use his legs to make plays, and because he threw a very good deep ball. He was not particularly good at short and intermediate passes, nor at reading defenses. His completion percentage was below average every year except 2004, the year he had the non-insane version of TO. His low INT rate had as much to do with always missing low instead of high as anything else.

I can't remember who it was, but a LB ran him down at a jog's pace after he scrambled right in a game early this season. It was really telling and even more sad how slow McNabb has become.

The media/internet is re-shaping history for how we will remember McNabb. How many QB's were better in the 2000's? Man, reading this thread, you will think he was just average QB..about the 15th best QB any given year. Thats just not the case. He was easily top 10 for the decade as a whole and generally regarded as a top 5-7 QB most years.

I understand black QB's in general get diminished once they leave the game, but the McNabb hate is out of control.

Could it have been Peppers?Peppers did something exactly like this in McNabb's last start. And to make it worse, Pepper's was doubtful with a knee injury heading into the game.

I'm with you. Hopefully, they knew they could get him cheaper. He could manage this offense. I added McNabb on the off chance he lands in Houston.

I agree. :shrug:I never really liked McNabb and maybe it's partly because I'm from Dallas... but he always lit up the Cowboys. (course they stunk for awhile
