Meltdown in Japan's Reactors (1 Viewer)

Has anyone found a link from a reputable source on this, not something that shares a page with "ALIENS ABDUCTED MY BABY" stories?
It's a VICE piece, they are VERY reputable

It's on youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAEvT_UdhNI
Oh, it's on youtube, then it must be true
Are you disputing the claims in the VICE piece?
No, I'm disputing the reply that since it's on youtube, it must be credible.
You're disputing an argument nobody made? Why?

Don't think that post is saying that. It is saying Vice is reputable and if you want to see their piece it is on youtube and here is the link.

Also, that piece is scary and really is much watch TV.

Exactly

I read it as "anyone have a link from a reputable source" and the reply was: "Youtube". Maybe I misunderstood. Just last week I saw a business advertise itself with "As seen on YouTube!" and for some reason they expected that to make them reputable. Thought a rash of it was going around.

The answer was "It's a VICE piece, they are VERY reputable."

The "they" in that statement is obviously referring to VICE.

I'm not sure why you understood it to be referring to the next sentence in the response where it being available on YouTube was stated. That is odd.

It is very scary! No one wants to talk about it because there is nothing we can do. So since it is so scary... why even talk about it is the response. Sticking the head in the sand always is the last resort when nothing else seems plausible and the scenario is too disturbing to think about. Am I wrong?

I worry that the OSHA guy might be right. With a few young children in my family, it is VERY CONCERNING! I wish there was something we could do. I do not have a clue,

There is always an option. 1st step is admitting there's a problem.

#douch not douch#

I hope you are right. What that option is remains a mystery to me and most of the so-called experts I have read comments from concerning the growing highly radioactive plume.

Seems to be a common trait by those who think there's no issue here.

I'm not saying the sky is falling, but holy ####!

its like eating bananas on an airplane.

I'm pretty shocked more people are not highly concerned about this, this is becoming a global size issue
Like Global Warming?
Radiation levels 168 times higher than Hiroshima, radiation leaking into the Pacific ocean, it's a little more tangible than global warming
I understand the Pacific Ocean is pretty big.
Over two thirds of the world's sea fishing industry comes from the Pacific.

I understand that water from Japan doesn't just stay next to Japan.

I wonder if anything ever became diluted in the Pacific ocean?

I don't like sea food. I am ok with radio active fish.

I wonder why we don't just dump all our radioactive waste into the ocean and let it get diluted?

Thats a good question - seeing as we have no frigging idea on what else to do with the radioactive waste in the world. Put it somewhere in the Mariana's Trench. Guam could use the tourism boost when all the 3-headed fish crop up around the island.

Cool! It's a good thing birds and other animals don't eat radioactive fish either.
Its ok, I don't eat sea gulls, terns, or really any bird that is not bred to end up on my dinner plate.

And by the time this all works its way through the food chain, its not going to be that bad. Plus we'll have built up a tolerance to it via the airborne pollutants.

The Pacific ocean contamination is the least of our worries here - unless you eat sushi - in which case stay away from the glow-in-the-dark variety - really stay away from raw seafood period, but that should have gone without saying.

Another leak detected

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/fresh-nuclear-leak-detected-at-fukushima-plant/ar-BBhQtos

Sensors at the Fukushima nuclear plant have detected a fresh leak of highly radioactive water to the sea, the plant's operator announced Sunday, highlighting difficulties in decommissioning the crippled plant.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said the sensors, which were rigged to a gutter that pours rain and ground water at the Fukushima Daiichi plant to a nearby bay, detected contamination levels up to 70 times greater than the already-high radioactive status seen at the plant campus.

TEPCO said its emergency inspections of tanks storing nuclear waste water did not find any additional abnormalities, but the firm said it shut the gutter to prevent radioactive water from going into the Pacific Ocean.

The higher-than-normal levels of contamination were detected at around 10 am (0100 GMT), with sensors showing radiation levels 50 to 70 times greater than usual, TEPCO said.

Though contamination levels have steadily fallen throughout the day, the same sensors were still showing contamination levels about 10 to 20 times more than usual, a company spokesman said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the original spike of the contamination and its gradual fall, he added.

"With emergency surveys of the plant and monitoring of other sensors, we have no reason to believe tanks storing radioactive waste water have leaked," he told AFP.

"We have shut the gutter (from pouring water to the bay). We are currently monitoring the sensors at the gutter and seeing the trend," he said.

The latest incident, one of several that have plagued the plant in recent months, reflects the difficulty in controlling and decommissioning the plant, which went through meltdowns and explosions after being battered by a giant tsunami in March 2011, sparking the world's worst nuclear disaster in a generation.

TEPCO has not been able to effectively deal with an increasing amount of contaminated water, used to cool the crippled reactors and molten fuels inside them and kept in large storage tanks on the plant's vast campus.

Adding to TEPCO's headaches has been the persistent flow of groundwater from nearby mountains travelling under the contaminated plant before washing to the Pacific Ocean.

The International Atomic Energy Agency recently said TEPCO has made "significant progress" in cleaning up the plant, but suggested that Japan should consider ways to discharge treated waste water into the sea as a relatively safer way to deal with the radioactive water crisis.

The 6.8 earthquake that occured in that area around 0800 (JST) that morning might have had something to do with it. It triggered tsunami sirens as far south as Okinawa..
