Merriman's career in jeopardy? (1 Viewer)

Just saw this:

** ProFootballTalk.com reports: “In the wake of a report that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman visited with renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews regarding Merriman’s knee, we’re hearing that there is quiet concern within the organization that Merriman could be done, after only four NFL seasons.”

From Kevin Acee's (SD Union Tribune Chargers beat writer) mailbag -

He finally decided the pain was too much and taking too long to subside. So he headed to Alabama to get Dr. Andrews' input.

This might not be good news, but I am assured it's also not a given he'll require more surgery. He could start the season, and even if he does have surgery they're not talking right now like he would miss the whole season.

They said "It could be nothing" or it could be the end of his career. That is a pretty wide margin! i think we would have heard something previously.

While Merriman does have talent, he is one of the most overrated players in the league right now.

Hopefully this doesn't end his career

Tons of classiness in this thread already.
Unfortunately, that's what most of these threads exude. Hopefully, will school starting up soon recess will be over.
I'm sure that's part of it, but there's a ton of hate directed at Merriman to begin with from many people who frequent the board. Not that some of it isn't deserved, but joking about a guy's career ending early due to injury - well I won't say anything more about it.

This is ridiculous. Can I get a quote from a coach, a player, a friend, someone in the organization? To say there is concern, his career could be over, and then say surgery might not even be necessary...I mean seriously, title change?

You can pretty much consider what Kevin Acee saidto be what you'd get from the organization - he's very connected.

Further surgery an option on left kneeBy Kevin AceeUNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITERAugust 21, 2008Shawne Merriman will return from Birmingham, Ala., today after consulting with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews about lingering pain in his left knee.Further surgery is an option for the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker, but it is also possible Merriman will be able to begin the season.Merriman, who has been working rigorously on the side throughout training camp, made the decision along with his advisers to see Andrews on Tuesday and flew to Alabama. He was examined by Andrews yesterday, but a source said a diagnosis and course of action will not be known for a while.“It's still lingering, the same (stuff) as last year,” said a source close to Merriman.Merriman played through the pain last season and had his meniscus repaired in March by Chargers physician David Chao.Merriman reported feeling fine before training camp. He participated in most practices the first few weeks of camp and played in the exhibition opener. He did not play Saturday at St. Louis and has not practiced in more than a week.Still, his workouts on the side have been even more rigorous than practice. However, the pain in his knee is severe enough that he was concerned there might be something wrong.

Some classless responses in this thread. Steeler fan must have had the day off today. :goodposting:
Seriously ... it's not our job or duty to put a spin on things. The truth is not always warm and fuzzy. Merriman on the Juice was a probowl quality/Defensive player of the year candidate Merriman after steriods is a very unremarkable player struggling at the NFL level.

Hope he's OK but I have to drop the SD DEF down a little bit as he is such a big part of their scheme. Without him they are average IMO.

Merriman after steriods is a very unremarkable player struggling at the NFL level.
Your team wishes they had 22 starters who are as unremarkable as Merriman was last tear. His tackles went up from the previous year and his sack total was still the 6th best in the league. The guy struggled his way right back to the AP's All-NFL team. Moving from weak-side to strong-side helps explain his small dropoff in sacks.

I can't stand Merriman as much as anyone but let's consider the source here. ProFootballtalk.com being the only one reporting on this means it most likely has no truth to it.
