Message to City of Baltimore, the old man is dead already (1 Viewer)

I would think Balt fans should be happy. the Colts leaving opened the door to getting the ravens/browns and thus a super bowl championship.

GrOOvus, thanks for the article, too lengthy to quote again. Everyone please take note that it was from SI and not from the local media.

Yeah, we probably have an inferiority complex around here (I'm in Westminster, BTW) but we have had much to feel inferior about. Just joking, we really should let it all go, appreciate a pretty nice place to live and enjoy our AFC North rivalries with Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Cincinnati.

You might be right and maybe Baltimore football fans really should let it all go. And it's definitely hard for persons in other cities to appreciate the degree of emotion (venom, hatred, etc.) that is still associated with the "move in the middle of the night."OTOH, I think every football fan who lives and dies with their team each Sunday can appreciate the heartfelt support for a beloved team that was truly a part of the community. From the mid-1950's until the early 1980s, the Baltimore Colts were such a team, and there was an incredible bond between the team and the city/region/state.

It is generally acknowledged that the championship games in 1958 and 1959 between the Colts and the New York Giants (The Greatest Game Ever Played in 1959) played a very significant role in popularizing the NFL. In Baltimore, however, those games transformed the Colts into a local institution that was admired by all citizens and revered by Baltimore sports fans.

Pittsburgh has some similarities to Baltimore with respect to the proportion of blue collar jobs and the strength of sports loyalties. And I would imagine that there would be a similar reaction if something similar to the "move in the middle of the night" happened to the Steelers. It's not something that a city gets over easily or quickly. The reaction can last for a long, long time -- as evidenced by what has been happening this week.

It might be a reach, but I can imagine a couple hundred thousand Baltimore football fans, watching on TV, booing as loudly as the fans will in the stadium on Saturday. Although it undoubtedly says something about Baltimore fans, I think this week's reaction says something more profound about the strength of sports loyalties in the U.S. And I don't think that's all bad.

Feelings and emotions are what they are -- neither good or bad. As positive as the feelings (of Baltimore sports fans) were towards the Colts in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the feelings were just as strong in the opposite direction in response to the "move in the middle of the night." Were they justified in 1984 when the move took place? Absolutely! Are these same feelings justified now 22 years later? Who knows? But they are still very strong for many, many people.

The first overtime playoff game was the 1958 game (called the greatest game ever played), not 1959.

Only because you live in Baltimore.

Wow! I'm probably not qualified to chime in on this, because I'm young and though I'm from Buffalo, I'm not a big fan of the Sabres or Bills (Broncos fan), but I will anyway. What Irsay did was wrong for sure, but get real. It's a football team. I understand that they bring money to the economic balance in the community, but this outright hatred for another francise is ridiculous. It's football. It's overpaid athletes whining about more money. For every Johnny U, there's 2,000 gifted athletes who are more concerned with making 3mil a year instead of 2.6mil. It is a league filled with owners who only care what's on the field so they can fill more luxory boxes. It's an entertainment business. If you are that "devastated" then surely you've been sucked in to the point where real-life is an afterthought. I love football as much as the next guy, but a several decade old incident that people are whining about makes me sick.
This is true, and I think "most" people have gotten over it. Of course the content-desperate media is going to harp on it now, and a few tools in here will fling poo at each other with no real point.Pretty sure most Baltimorons are quite happy with the Purple Browns, and could give a rat's ### about Cleveland, Indy, or anything else. Johnny U is mostly :kicksrock: here, or hasn't been to Maryland in the current century and is talking out of his posterior.Speaking as a Baltimoron who moved here 11 years ago and is only a casual Ravens rooter.
I'm also a transplanted Baltimoron, so I can see better than the natives what a giant inferiority complex the city has. Losing a team really tapped into that feeling, and seeing the records of "their" Colts attributed to Indy keeps it alive. Look at Los Angeles -- they couldn't care less about losing a team, because they don't have a gnawing insecurity about themselves or how their city is perceived.Baltimore homers -- where do you guys live? I'm south of Towson, just a couple tenths of a mile north of the city line.
I lived the first 40 years of my life in southern AA Co, made a 3 year stop in Clarksville (Howard Co), & now live near Hanover PA. Where I grew up, fans were almost evenly split between Colts & 'Skins. The unwritten rule was that you had to love one & hate the other. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but that's the way everyone I knew was.I fell on the Colts side. One of my dad's best friends was team photographer for the Colts in the 60s. He had the '68 Colts sign individual pictures personally to my brother & myself - Bubba, Johnny U, Shula, all of them. I lost them somewhere over the years :pirate:

It's not just that, a great deal of the difference lies in what the owners did prior to the move as well. Irsay took a perennially successful team with deep roots in the community and turned them into the 1970s version of the Arizona Cardinals almost overnight through his drunken tirades, greed and poor management decisions. Then after insisting repeatedly and publicly that he wasn't leaving, he turned down what was, as near as I can tell from what I've read, probably a better offer from Baltimore to pack up and go to Indy under cover of darkness.

Great video!! ThanksGreat last scene -- JohnnyU holding a Colts' helmut. And the last frame of "Win this one for Johnny!"

When he looks down on Saturday, guess which team JohnnyU will be rooting for?

Closet Indy Colts fans? The multitude of Baltimore sports fans will be joining JohnnyU in cheering for the team that he anointed as Baltimore's pro football team in the years prior to his death. And the game is being played in Unitas Stadium with the big statue of JohnnyU with his hightop cleats and classic pose that stands proudly in front of the stadium.

No offense to Indy fans -- this is just the way this has to play out.

Go Ravens!

A couple of my :2cents:

If Carroll Rosenblum hadn't traded the Colts for the Rams, what would have happened? (Calling JohnnyU on the background if you have it. It's kinda fuzzy for me.) Would things have transpired differently?

As a :boxing: fan, I consider BOTH Cleveland and Baltimore rivals. Darnedest thing, of all the franchises to clone, the NFL clones THE BROWNS? Sheesh. At least clone a franchise worth something more than the powder needed to blow it to Hades.

Lastly, if you listen to the ad for the Colts DVD, there's never a mention of the city IIRC. It's just "The Colts".

We would now have the Indy Rams, that's what would have happened. As we all know, LA sucks as far as having an NFL franchise, so Irsay would have moved the Rams to Indy, Jax, or Carolina.

Why do think all of the Baltimore Colts alum are pissed about the whole thing? Because they're represented as an Indy Colt. They have asked the NFL to remove their records and stats from the books but have been denied.I was listening to Baltimore ESPN radio 1300 am tonight with Bruce Laird (BAL Colts DB) and he basically said he and all his team mates felt like they were on their own in a raft in the middle of the NFL ocean. They weren't Indy Colts, they were Baltimore Colts, but their names and stats were in the Indy Colts history and media guide. Yet they even though they had settled down in Baltimore and made their livings here for several decades, they really had no claim to the Ravens either.

Last time I checked, Marcus Allen's stats are included with the Oakland Raiders stats even though he played with the L.A. Raiders.

Has Marcus Allen asked that his records be removed from the Oakland Raiders record books? Does Marcus Allen live in LA? Does he contribute his time and efforts regularly to charity events and appearances in LA? Has he lived their for several decades and bonded with the community? Raised his kids and based his family in LA?

I don't think whether a player requests his records be in one city or another is an option in the NFL, nor should it be. It's way bigger than the individual.

If that’s the way you feel then why did you even mention Marcus Allen?Face it. The man you try to honor by using his name as your moniker is rolling in his grave every time you root for the Indianapolis Colts or try to defend his records being mentioned in the Indianapolis Colts history.Johnny Unitas spent the rest of his life as a figure head in Baltimore and only Baltimore, he played as big a part possible to bring an NFL team to Baltimore, he was disgusted that he was associated with anything that mentioned “Indianapolis” and “Johnny Unitas” in the same sentence, he wasn’t alone in his feelings, and most every Baltimore Colt alum feel the same way.Do Johnny a favor.Log out and create a new login id and never login under JohnnyU again. You can have ColtsFan1, PeytonM, or BIrsay. Whatever. But at least do the man you try to honor the favor of not mentioning the Indianapolis Colts in the same sentence with his name.

I probably liked JU before you were born, and I can respect JU and like the current Colts. It's called freedom of expression. I believe that is an important principle to this country. I'm probably one of the few Colts fan that loved the Baltimore Colts and the Indy Colts and mean it.

You're probably right. But you obviously have no idea what his wishes were and you mock him even now..

You need to take a chill pill. JU is a great poster here and is very respectful of the Colts history. Who are you to call him out for being a fan?Teams move, players move, #### happens and then you die. Get over it.JU didn't own the Colts, Bob Irsay did. He had every right to do what he did. However unhappy that made you or anyone else.As far as I'm concerned, you can have your damn records. I was not raised a Baltimore Colts fan, so I could care less.JU was a very good QB for his era. Like the other poster said, he'd be battling Jim Sorgi for snaps in practice.Maybe it is this that makes you so upset?

Wow! I'm probably not qualified to chime in on this, because I'm young and though I'm from Buffalo, I'm not a big fan of the Sabres or Bills (Broncos fan), but I will anyway. I almost feel bad for the younger fans who only know the NFL as it is now with all the contract disputes and the T.O.'s of the league. Some of you choose to mock the "old farts" and have no more respect for the history of the league than some of the players today. Back then, the players were truly part of the community in which they played. They lived there and worked at "real" jobs during the season as well as the offseason. They didn't make enough money to support their family with football alone.I have no association with Baltimore or Indy, but I can really appreciate the frustration that the Baltimore Colts fans feel. I can't imagine my Packers leaving along with their name, records, etc...It's obvious that Irsay was a ****ard, but I think the NFL shares some of the responsibility in this situation.I guess I just don't understand why they would not allow a city to keep it's name and records when an owner takes a team and moves it to another city...IMO it is no longer the same team. Why allow it for one team(Browns) and not another? Makes no sense to me.Packer fans back me up in support of Baltimore. Can you imagine another city claiming the records of guys like Starr, Hornung, Nitschke, Favre, and God forbid...LOMBARDI?

As an old Baltimore Colts fan (so old that I watched the 1958 and 1959 championship games live), I thank you, bbuster for your support. I think you realize the gut-wrenching feelings and emotions that Baltimore Colts fans felt after "the move in the middle of the night" (and still feel more than 20 years later). Can you imagine the reaction of Packers fans if something like that happened to your team? Plus the insult of the NFL transferring the team name and all the records (and even the uniform) to the new city that had no part of the Colts illustrious history.SportsCenter has a great segment on current Baltimore football fans and their feelings about the game today. Plus great shots of JohnnyU, Raymond Berry, Lenny Moore, Alan Ameche, and other "original Colts."I have no problems with Manning, Harrison or any other members of the current Indy Colts. And no offense intended to Indy fans -- you certainly have a right to root for your team. But IMO, the biggest obstacle for the Indy Colts is a whole lot of bad karma. I fear the "Curse of Irsay" will be with you for a long, long time.Again, bbuster, thank you for your comments and your support.

So, if you owned the Colts and weren't getting the support from the city and then the city threatened to invoke imminent domain, you wouldn't consider doing the same thing as Bob Irsay?Baltimore is a great city! The leadership of Baltimore and Irsay of the Colts were at odds. Irsay saw that he needed a new stadium. I'm sorry the leadership of Baltimore didn't have the foresight to see it as well. Furthermore, I feel they had arrogance in thinking there was no way Irsay would move the Colts. There were dealing in bad faith. He did what he had to do. Businesses move every day! The NCAA moved its headquarters from KC to Indy, the Raiders moved, the Cardinals moved. It is time for Baltimore and its fans to get over it. The records belong to the Colts.Maybe if the Cleveland Ravens win this week, you will feel some vengeance and get over it?!

As Baltimore born and raised, maybe if you Indy folks got smart you could work grass routes to get the Baltimore records back here where they belong. Until then, you are dealing with bad karma and will continue to get your ### kicked like today

I'm not mocking anyone. I'm not from Baltimore, but like I said, I've been a Colts far for 40 years, so when the team left I didn't quit liking the Colts. I'll tell you this, if the Colts gave the name and records back to the City of Baltimore and the Ravens became the Colts again, I would be a Baltimore Colts fan again. I have all the respect in the world for the Baltimore history, but I'm also a Colts fan regardless of what city they play in. If JU is rolling in his grave because of "little ol' me", then I'm sorry Johnny.

How about we change your question to "Jackie Smith" or "Dan Dierdorf" and "St. Louis Cardinals"? Would that make you feel better?JohnnyU is the man and as usual has a  . :) to the 40+ set.

Isn't it kinda hypocritical to complain about your team going elsewhere when another franchise relocated to your city? Irsay & Moddell both got better deals, so they moved their teams. As the owners, that is their right. I admit sneaking out of the city is shady, but it's still his team.

Indy screwed y'all, and y'all screwed Cleveland. Same s*(%, different day.

As far as whining about keeping the name and history, no team oustide of the Browns has received that deal, so get over it. That was a rare exception for any sport. Warren Moon is a Tennessee Titan. George Mikan is a L.A. Laker, and so on.

The "old man" Irsay is dead, so get over your hate of the Colts. I think a lot of you never stopped liking the Colts even after the move to Indy. I also think most of the Ravens fans who were Colts fans, would take the Colts name back in a heartbeat and drop the Ravens name if allowed, even though the Ravens won a Super Bowl this decade. Yes, the old man wronged you on that fateful night, but this team isn't that team, and his son isn't anything like his dad.Fior the record, I've been a Colts fan for over 40 years, both Balt and Indy. I have no city allegiance and never will.
Nice try, but as you've no doubt found out, you're wasting your time. The Ravens could win the next 10 SBs and the Colts none and the Balitmorons would STILL be crying/biting their pillows at night

A few Baltimorons have undermined my attempts to defend them, by whining about what the NFL says about pointless old records, so I'll just have to agree with BR now I guess.

But I also agree that a guy calling himself "Johnny U" talking #### to Baltimore fans is pretty low class.

Either way.. Go Ravens. The Colts sucked 25 years ago and they suck now.

Pointless old records? It amazes me how jaded some "fans" have become. It's called history. I still remember going to the library in elementary school and reading every Lombardi/Packer book I could get my hands on. Reading this thread also brought back the memory of reading about Unitas after I read all the Packer books. Maybe we should just toss all the History books in general...it's over right? Move on. :goodposting: Maybe it's time to change the name of the Lombardi trophy since Lombardi it no longer with us. The NFL has a rich history that should be enjoyed. It wasn't always spoiled, overpaid players whining about contracts. You're welcome Driver. I honestly wish that it had occured to me earlier. I actually thought about it when I started seeing the ads for the Colts video, but it really hit me when I read this thread. I'm very thankful/lucky that my Packers are owned by "us" and not some arrogant billionaire.

Get off your high horse :lmao: Everyone knows Johnny Unitas and Lenny Moore played for Baltimore, and it is reflected as such in any and every book I've ever seen. The Colts moved. Lots of teams moved. Get over it.As was already pointed out, the gift to Cleveland was unprecedented. Rational Baltimore fans (that is, most Baltimore fans) are happy with the history they have as well as their current team. Even if they do lose to Indy today

You know I read an article in a Cleveland paper today that a bunch of the old Baltimore Players got together and made an offer to purchase the Baltimore Colts logo and name for $5 mil. They wanted their names in the record books to say Baltimore instead of Indy. The owner came back with a counter-offer of $10 mil. Considering what these players made in their entire careers that seems to be a huge slap in the face. Especially when you figure that if they did sell the logo, merchandise sales would have went through the roof. After all, all those Indy fans would have to buy new hats, jerseys ect.. if that wasn't their logo anymore.

As far as the talk about your situation in Baltimore being worse than in Cleveland, imagine this. After the move to Indy, the NFL awards your city a new expansion team and you get to keep your name. You are ecstatic and then the bad news comes. You get screwed in the expansion draft and regular NFL draft since the NFL thinks the Jaguars and Panthers got too good of a deal. Because the NFL is trying to squeeze every last dollar out of deal that it can, the bidding war for the team takes forever and by the time the team is awarded to an owner, your team is out of the bidding for any major coaching and GM candidates and you have to settle for what's left of the coaches and GM's that got fired. You scramble to get your no name coaches and scouts together and really don't have any time to evaluate talent for the upcoming draft. You draft your team of under-evaluated players drafted by your unwanted GM and coached by your unwanted coaches and then you realize that you have to get trounced by your old team twice a year that eventually goes on to win the Superbowl.

Just because it hurt different when you guys got kicked in the teeth, please don't say that it didn't hurt when we got kicked in the teeth. Just like it hurts that all your good players are listed as Indy Colts, it hurts me to see Ozzie Newsome as the GM of the Baltimore Browns.

Until then, you are dealing with bad karma and will continue to get your ### kicked like today :moneybag:
Here's some salt for those wounds! :bag:

Yeah, the Colts sucked their way over the Ravens and they'll suck their way to winning the Super Bowl.I bet you wish you sucked like that in whatever job you have, if you have one.

If they win the SB, I'll take it back. Til then, they suck. Turns out the Ravens suck worse :thumbup:Jobs are for zombies.

Based on previous posts in this thread, it looks like Baltimore gets to add another Super Bowl trophy to its collection.
