Miami cannot run the ball. Time to bump up Marshall and Bess (1 Viewer)

The Dolphins have Reggie Bush as their first option. Bush has not been and never will be a between the tackles runner. Daniel Thomas is a bust to this point. Larry Johnson in NFL years in 96 years old and Rex Hilliard is a borderline NFL talent at best.

The Dolphins total lack of a running game was evident Monday night against the Patriots when instead of trying to run the ball in from two yards out (perfect example of why Reggie Bush is not a lead back in the NFL)they kept attempting fade routes to their wr's.

On the flip side of that Chad Henne threw for over 400 yards and actually looked like an NFL caliber qb with quality options like Marshall and Best at his disposal... There is little doubt in my mind that B. Marshall and D.Bess are going to benefit from this in a big way. Even Harline and Fassano should see a rise in their numbers.

If I were looking for some sleeper picks at wr/ted I would take a chance on D.Bess, A.Fassano and to a lesser extent B.Hartline going forward.

I loved Marshall coming into the year for where you could get him and week 1 certainly reinforced my opinion. He just needs to get some TDs because he'll get 100 catches and 1200+ yards.

I still think Miami will try to bring in another RB.

Throwing a dart at the board...........I came up with Tashard Choice in a trade with Dallas.

typical Bess stat lines of 6-85, 5-96, are going to be the norm this season, with a slight uptick in production..

he's going to be this year's version of 2010 Santana Moss - i.e., 93recs, 1150-1200 yards, 5-7 TDs.

money in the bank as far as consistency goes..a terrific flex option and a solid #2 WR!

Maybe upgrade Marshall a bit (though FBG already has him as a top 10 WR this week), but the Reggie effect on Bess is probably not be a good thing IMO. Just ask Lance Moore owners over the last couple of years how Reggie can affect a slot receiver's numbers.

I'd want to wait and see how Bess does when Henne comes back down to earth (he will)...but if you've got an extra roster spot, Bess might be worth a flier, especially in PPR...

might be worth a flier? this guy gets drafted in all PPR leagues I play in. He's a great flex guy.

There's a lot of beef on that Patriots D line (Wilfork, Haynesworth, et al), and the Pats secondary isn't that strong. My guess is a lot of teams will struggle running the ball against the Patriots and will choose to pass instead. I think it's a bit early to conclude that Miami has no running game.

Agree about Marshall.

I love Bess and he's been PPR gold but the Dolphins almost completely ignored him until late in the game Monday night. Jaws made note of how quiet Bess was at one point in the second half. Bush got all the targets Bess probably would've gotten. He ended up with his typical numbers but I do wonder if he'll lose out to Bush (as long as Bush is healthy) over the course of the season.

Came in to post this. Miami's offensive line is better than they're given credit for. There will be games where their running game is effective, even with Reggie Bush.

I am not a fan of Reggie Bush as a featured rb at all. There is no doubt that he has real life value if used correctly, but if the Dolphins are serious about using him as a between the tackles guy he won't last a month. If he were to last all season he still would not be productive as a rb who gets 20+ handoffs per game. If anyone saw the game the lack of a true between the tackles runner cost the Dolphins dearly. They had nobody to handoff to and had keep attempting fade routes to the endzone.Bess could go either way. I think the guy is really talented. If he played for the Patriots he would put up Wes Welker type numbers. I think he is worth the risk considering that Miami will be throwing more often this season.

Fair enough...I don't play PPR, but outside of PPR leagues, he's usually a perennial benchwarmer or on the waiver wire. Anyways, my main point is that I don't see this situation increasing his value at this point...

They didn't have a running game last year either.

I ain't bumping any if their players. They all are going after the same short/intermediate routes. Bess, Bush, Marshall. They are gonna cannibalize each other.

The offense wasn't really the problem, although they definitely struggled in the red zone and I think the new playcaller needs to go back to the drawing board. The defense was tired and unprepared. The playcalling was questionable on that side too. They had nothing, no chance.

My motto is that defenses ALWAYS play better than offenses in the first week of the season because their job and coordination is easier to accomplish.

This year is even worse because of the extended 4 month layoff. Of course, the Pats and Packers were definitely exceptions to this - they both looked flawless.

I wouldn't draw too many conclusions after 1 week - I'd judge more after 3 weeks to see how things are shaking out. The Miami offense actually looked better than I expected, particularly because Henne wasn't as terrible as he was in the past.

How many more Bush threads do we need?
In no way is this a Bush thread. It's a thread about how Miami cannot run the ball and they will look to pass far more often.
You mentioned Bush as many or more times in your post as anyone on the Dolphins. That doesn't help.

He's a bust? He's yet to play a down in the NFL. He missed his FIRST game. We have no idea how he's going to play (you can't judge him by a few meaningless games in the preseason...see Steve Smith, CAR). To call him a bust is extremely pre-mature, IMO

If Henne really has turned a corner, then this may come true. But having owned him last year when Brown+Williams were toting the rock, Marshall wasn't exactly earning his keep given his draft position. He wasn't worhtless, but he was certainly benchable if my WR3 or WR4 had good match-ups.

Not to mention the Pats offense puts up a lot of points and usually builds a lead.

I can't remember a time when I was rooting for a guy to prove everyone wrong more than I want Reggie to shut everyone up this year.

Give him a full 16 games in his current role and he'll be top 12 by year's end. Man I'd love to see that...... for some reason the Bush haters are starting to get annoying to me.

Bush may finish top 12 in FF, but with a 3.8/carry and a 6.9/catch he's not really scaring anyone on the other team. IMO Sproles is going to show everyone what a halfway decent back in Bush's role can do.

Sproles is going to be better in New Orleans than Bush was.

totally agree.......Thomas didn't look half as bad in the preseason as many were reporting. anyone else find the signing of Larry to temporary replace Thomas ironic? the rap on Thomas is nearly identical to what Vermeil was saying about a young LJ. I'm waiting for Sparano to publicly come out and say that it is time for Thomas to take off the diaper

They need Thomas to be the short yardage and goal line back. Bush cannot withstand 20+ carries in a game all season long. If Thomas emerges, they could have a nice 1-2 punch.

Not sure how much I'd bump up Marshall just yet. I agree that he deserves some sort of bump, as I definitely saw a blatant and determined attempt to start force feeding him the football. Only trouble is, as good as Henne's night was, he had Marshall open at least twice for TDs but failed to get the ball to him. So yes I'd bump Marshall for now, but until Henne shows he can throw a halfway decent fade route or drop a touch pass into Marshall's stride when he has his coverage beat, I'll be on guard and ready to slide him back down in a couple weeks.
