it shows it running from 7 to 10! (on NBC)

wtf?

was the original first episode an hour and they're stretching it in to a 3 hour to promote the new movie?

I would guess it was a two-hour premiere, stretched to three by the braintrust at NBC.Edit: IMDb lists the runtime as 92 minutes. Perfect for a two-hour TV slot, but three hours? Yikes.

Looks like they're going to be spending some time to pimp the movie:

"MIAMI VICE: UNDERCOVER

Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx host a three-hour Miami Vice event that takes you back in time with the original 2-hour Miami Vice pilot - now in HD! - and up to the present with an original featurette on acclaimed director Michael Mann's new take on his own '80's classic. Don't miss a car chase, explosion, Don Johnson's infamous wardrobe, or a special sneak peek at this summer's hottest blockbuster... Miami Vice!"

It's on at 8:00 eastern.

I always like watching Jimmy Smits getting blown up.

Miami Vice has been on Sleuth for months. They only run seasons 1 & 2 though. They are on their 3rd or 4th round right now.

They've shown Season 3 as well. That's what season they're on right now.

Right. The one with Mark Breland, Don King, and Tex Cobb was pretty good, except for Zito getting killed.

Season 3 was the last standout season. The show started to fall apart in Season 4 although there were still some decent ones. But Tubbs with a beard should've been a bad omen that things were only going to get worse.

I've seen bits and pieces of the show, but I was born in 83 so it's a little before my time. Just finished the pilot on Netflix and gonna start working through the series.

The weekly score by Jan Hammer was the best music on TV I ever heard.

There were a lot of great guest spots.

It got better once James Edward Olmos was cast, he had more natural gravitas than the guy from Sanford and Son (which may be another before your time reference).

I remember a wedding scene on a beach. The keyboard player in the scene was Jan Hammer.
He performed in "One Way Ticket" and "Like a Hurricane" (not sure which one was on the beach?).

A partial list of the "celebrity", musician, athlete, etc. guest appearances (a lot less in season 5): Bruce Willis, Glenn Frey, Pam Grier, John Turturro, Gene Simmons, Miles Davis, Dean Stockwell, G. Gordon Liddy, Phil Collins, Ted Nugent, Danny Sullivan, Bill Russell, Bernard King, Roberto Duran, Frank Zappa, Bianca Jagger, Tommy Chong, John Leguizamo, Lee Iacoca, Liam Neeson, Jeff Fahey, Ron Perlman, Willie Nelson, Steve Buscemi, Bill Paxton, Wesley Snipes, Don King, Randall "Tex" Cobb, Helena Bonham Carter, Vincent D'Onofrio, Viggo Mortensen, Annete Benning, Lou Diamond Phillips, Melanie Griffith, George Takei, Vanity, Jon Matuszak, Benicio del Toro, Brian Dennehy, Ben Stiller, Miguel Ferrer, Ving Rhames, Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Sheena Easton, R. Lee Ermey (drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket) and Julia Roberts.

Perfect show for the time and place. I am not sure it would hold up as well now, but would be interesting to watch for nostalgia.

In the first 8 episodes you've got guest appearances from Ed O'Neill, Dennis Farina, and Bruce Willis

Tons of people showed up on Miami Vice. Jimmy Smits, Ben Stiller, Steve Buscemi, Benecio Del Toro, Liam Neeson, Chris Rock. Musicians like Glenn Frey, Gene Simmons, Ted Nugent, Frank Zappa & Phil Collins. Hell, even R. Lee Ermey made an appearance.

In the first 5 episodes of this series, like 9 or 10 cops have been killed. Seems excessive.
Go watch cocaine cowboys. It was something down there then
Amazing documentary...
Actually last night in Showtime they showed a version that was expanded. Still holds up. Apparently the main guy died of cancer and Griselda was assassinated two years ago. When it was first made I believe she was missing and presumed dead in 2003 or 04 but she was in Columbia laying low all that time

Add John Torturro and Pam Grier... Season 1 just has such a crazy cast of guest stars.

Add Ving Rhames into the mix.
