"SI's Jim Trotter reports that 49ers players have been put off by Michael Crabtree's "ambivalence" toward preseason and camp.

Trotter calls Wednesday's dust-up between Crabtree and Vernon Davis "legit." According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, the rest of the roster was pleased that Davis called Crabtree out. Said coach Mike Singletary after the incident, "(Vernon Davis) is one of the captains. He did the right thing, but he did it the wrong way. ... But I appreciate what he was trying to do."

Vernon Davis has anger issues and has been in numerous fights with teammates before. Michael Crabtree is a diva. It's pre-season and tempers flare.

Nothing to see here.

So this is a case of Vernon Davis having ONE good season (FINALLY playing up to his hype and potential), and he decides he's calling out Crabtree.

right.

I wonder who was calling out Davis the past few years

Coach agreeing with VD is kinda interesting, but it all goes away as long as Crabtree produces.
True and true. But I have to decide whether or not to draft him BEFORE he produces or not this season. Isn't an Allen Iverson approach to practice in an NFL WR that came from a spread offense a bit of a concern?

The news to me isn't that there was a dust-up. The news to me is that Crabtree may not understand what it takes to be great in the game. And if it is bad enough that Crab's teammates are so aware of it that they are glad Davis went off on him, that tells me it's more than just taking a play or two off here and there. It starts to sound a bit more like a pattern.

How does Crabtree respond when Davis calls him out in front of people and everyone sides with Davis? Does he buckle down or pout? Does he harbor resentment and let it fester?

The SI reporter says the fight was "legit"The local beat reporter said the team was happy that Davis was calling out Crabtree. The head coach said Davis did "the right thing".Seems there might be something to see here... :goodposting:

No, not really. If Crabtree produces nobody will care. Davis has been in several fights with his teammates over the years. The most interesting part is Singletary backing up Vernon. All in all this really is nothing.

Glad I passed on this loser and went with my boy Hakeem Nicks. A diva QB on a team that will be run first, has a crappy QB and has a TE who will demand the ball first as well, BAD MIX!

Ultimately Singletary's opinion goes no matter what. But it wouldn't look too good on Vernon's behalf if his coach disagrees with how he's conducting his captaincy. Is he merely saying he agrees with him to not cause a contradiction AND to light a fire under Crabtree, who may not really needed a verbal bashing in the first place?

Wow. Vernon Davis calls out another player for slacking/attitude problem. The other player happens to be the franchise. As unbelievable as that is, Singletary defends VD for said "call out." Not sure many people buy this story a year ago.

Wasn't aware that Crabtree had these issues. Maybe Multiple Scores can clear this up for us. :)

How far has Davis come? Wow! Really shows the power that Singletary has as a coach. Man I hope he comes and coaches the Bears some day. Instead we're going the opposite direction.

My question exactly, although, Vernon has been there a few years and regardless of his production he is a team leader. Personally I loved that he got in Crabtree's ### for being a diva. Vernon knows what it's like to be humbled and despite his past he has been a model teammate and elite TE since last year. Crabtree needs to take a few lessons from Vernon before we have T.O. Jr. on our hands.

Everything I have gathered is that the incident was not related to football. I can't find anything to back up this had to do with mikes ambivelence or work ethic or that teammates were glad about it. With that said how quick some were to make false judgements and accusations. Mike didn't get this good playing WR for three years by being lazy and not caring. It should have been obvious but I am not surprised as Ive been to the DMV and seen my fellow humans.

Crabtree's reputation at Texas Tech was not exactly stellar. Rumors of laziness, bad attitude, poor work ethic, drug use, diva mentality, etc. Then the guy launched the dumbest rookie hold-out ever as his intro to the NFL and has somehow managed to avoid playing a single down in any pre-season game. Meanwhile Vernon Davis has developed into a team leader on the 49ers. Not at all surprising that he called out Crabtree or that Singletary agreed with that move, Singletary probably just wants VD to do that kind of thing out of sight of reporters and cameras.

Its definatly something to worry about when it comes to Crabtree owners, you never want to be that player that a team leader and some of the other players disagree with.

Non football related per coach. I'll give mike a call and ask him. Lol. Rumor has it locally that it involves Davis girlfriend, rumor just like the OP post.

Probably referring to the De'Shon Sanders episode

There were 'rumors of...drug use' during the De'Shon Sanders episode

Never heard those rumors of Mike taking drugs. Got a link?
In a 2 second search, all I found was:http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3744701

Stating that Crabs was not implicated in the investigation (but reporters were asking the question) but he was in the apartment when they searched it. I definitely remember rumors, but it was probably from blogs and other BS. Clearly nothing even remotely solid. People were asking the question, though, for sure...

This quote from Singletary would make me think it is football related: Singletary felt the incident between Davis and Crabtree made the 49ers stronger.

"We didn't get better on the field in practice, but we got better as a team," Singletary said. "There are no elephants in the room. The elephant was exposed."

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=tsn-166763

Crabtree is quickly becoming a primadonna. Even SF homer Stephania Bell made a joke about Crab prancing around the practise field like a model or a rock star. I'm assuming Davis confronted him about his half assing it out there.

I think this is being blown out of proportion. Guys in locker rooms / on sidelines argue all the time in all sports and at almost any level of competition so why is this even a story? From what I've seen both those guys are competitors and I'm sure not being physically ready to play leads to frustration. Davis needs to have more tact and I'm sure Crabtree needs to take criticism better. If the team is imploding because of turmoil in the locker room then it's an issue but this doesn't look that bad... Moving on.

Saw interview last night where Coach is now saying Vernon was wrong to react that way, and that thats not how we treat family, we treat family with respect, etc. :goodposting:

Davis has always been the hardest worker on the field and in the room. Even when Mike called him out for not being a winner he acknowleged that he worked hard. Besides, Davis is a team captain and it is his place to call out kids who don't seem to get what it takes to be a teammate.

No way. There is no way Singletary sides with Davis if it's off field stuff. Also, Crabtree has been accused of "being lazy, not caring" and being a bad teammate for years now. Besides, I'm sure every teammate on SF had a bad taste in their mouth about Crab for holding out till mid season.

I'm curious where Multiple Scores is gathering his information.

I liked Crabtrees statistical future going into yesterday. But I drafted VD last night because i think he'll lead the 49ers again and be top scorer at TE.

Crabs is a punk. This is nothing new. MULTIPLE teams (not just my lowly Raiders) had him on their do not draft list because he's such an arrogant headcase.

The man is talented, no doubt, but it's absolutely no surprise that his teammates don't like him. And if you think that isn't a big deal, you don't know this game very well. This team is lucky to have a strong leader in Singletary keeping this guy in line (relatively).

The vitriol in this thread against Crabtree reminds me of all the hate for Brandon Marshall last year. Drafted him nice and cheap, got a WR1 for WR3 price. Looks like I'll be able to do it again this year with Crabtree. This is fantasy football. Why in the world does anybody here give one crap about a player's character? I'll take the 1000yd, 10TD player with "character issues" over the 600yd 6TD nice guy every time.

Yeah, I used to think the same way until two years ago when Plaxico shot himself (and my fantasy team) in the leg.
