Titans' top pick moving to corner

Griffin primarily a safety in college

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

The Titans said first-round draft pick Michael Griffin, a safety from Texas, could line up anywhere in the secondary.

When he takes the field as an NFL player for the first time today, however, he'll be easy to spot.

"We are going to line him up at corner,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said Thursday.

Griffin played most of his college career at safety. But going into the draft the Titans were one of several teams who thought he was capable of making the switch to corner at the next level.

With cornerback Pacman Jones suspended for the season, Griffin has an opportunity. But the Titans signed former Colts cornerback Nick Harper this offseason and Reynaldo Hill, the starter opposite Jones last season, is back. Coaches also liked Cortland Finnegan's play at nickelback last year as a rookie.

Fisher said moving Griffin to corner isn't necessarily an experiment.

"We feel like he has corner skills and we know he can play the other positions,'' he said. "So we want to get him as familiar as we possibly can at the position as soon as we can. I think he is best suited to play (cornerback). That's what we're doing, and I believe it is going to work out.''

The 10 draft picks and a batch of undrafted free agents will be on the field at Baptist Sports Park today for two practices at rookie orientation.

The veterans join the rookies next week for the first mini-camp of the offseason.

His value takes a hit with the Titans' Kelly Herndon signing. Now...Griffin should leap-frog Herndon by next year; however, that's a LOOOONG wait for a CB.

Or maybe they'll move him back to safety where he belongs. Not that he'll have great IDP value there either, though.

Agreed. He would be an instant upgrade. If they keep Griffin at CB, I think the writing is on the wall for Pacman's future in TEN.

Indeed - and incidentally I do not understand that Griffin should be considered in the top 30 idp rookies - even as a cb. Not that it matters much if you are not in very deep leagues. In terms of lining up at FS he has to beat out LaMont Thompson who stinks so Griffin should still see the field a lot unless he is a total waste of a pick (or holds out)

Why draft a Safety in Griffin and move him to CB, when there were plenty on solid CBs left in the draft. The move makes no sense to me. I know that griffin is very athletic, and can probably make the adjustment, but I would go with a guy who has played and succeeded at CB in the 1st rd, rather than trying to move a guy from a different position.

Not sure if this is a permanent move, guess more out of neccesity. However, the safety position is evolving. Nowadays, some coaches at the college level are putting their best athletes at safety. Just look at the past couple of drafts at how quick and often safety's are coming off the board in the 1st round. This new breed is different ... Its not like the old days when you played safety because you couldn't cover well enough to play corner.

What's everyone's feeling regarding Pac Man's value going forward?
Extremely low. But it did bump up slightly when he dropped his appeal. Hopefully he can get things turned around, a year is a long time to keep your nose clean for someone who loves the night life.
Just trying to get a feel on what Dynasty owners are doing with him. I own him in Zealots and it would be crazy for me to drop him as we carry 53+ players and include return yardage, Pac Man was the #2 DB in that system last year. What I'm wondering is about IDP Dynasty's that only roster say 4 or 5 deep at each position, are folks hanging on to him or cutting bait?
