Michael Johnson - Rey Maualuga hopes in the garbage? (1 Viewer)

With Marvin Lewis staying in Cinci, what does it mean for Michael Johnson & Rey Maualuga? With hopes of a regime change and coaches who would recognize true natural positions of such players, will MJ or Rey ever get the chance to play DE & MLB? Thoughts? Gene??

I think it's a near certainty that Michael Johnson starts and gets the majority of snaps at RDE next season unless the Bengals decide that a 3-4 is their best front. Since they finally seem to have found a couple of guys that can regularly pressure the pocket from the 4-3, I think that's an unlikely change. Marvin Lewis, in what may have been the only useful comment he made in his press conference, noted that the young guys on defense were going to be a building block. I think that means Johnson, Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins.

Rey Maualuga is a different issue. He was even more inconsistent this year than last. At times, he read the play correctly, stayed in his gap, shed a block and made a big play. But he remains very susceptible to play action, overruns too many plays and misses too many tackles. Mike Zimmer has always had good things to say about him, but it's clear that Lewis wants a player he can trust at MLB. Dhani Jones seems likely to be gone next year, so it may end up being Rey Maualuga by default. If that happens, his upside will be determined by whether he plays every down and that's dependent on Lewis/Zimmer, what happens with FA Brandon Johnson, etc.

Jene, You are awesome! Your comments are always so knowledgeable and thorough. You are such an asset to Footballguys and to its subscribers. Thanks!

now that Jene made his comment i feel better about what i'm going to say as i was/am for sure i would be flamed.

besides fantasy owners praying for Rey to make the move, who really really thinks Rey would succeed at MLB? its much the reggie bush/DMC debate where players don't live up to expectations and maybe after a few years they do.........but mostly they don't. Guy is simply holding out hopes in many hearts based on what he did in College.

i've watched alot of bengal games and never came away impressed by Rey or have trouble recalling any 'WoW' type plays from him. atleast when DJ Williams or Derrick Johnson were playing SLB you'd see glimpses or some Jaw dropping plays.

Based on what came off the bengals website recently from the LB'er coach, Muckelroy has just as or more of a chance to be the future at MLB.

I think the assumption was that Dhani was gone, but I think that was based on Rey taking his rightful spot in the middle.

So far, it appears he doesn't have the goods, and it wouldn't surprise me if the by bring Dhani back.

This is purely a guess, but if he is their best MLB, he might be there one more year.
