Microfracture Surgery vs. Meniscus Replacement (1 Viewer)

Several NFL players have had microfracture surgery, which has sometimes ended their career.

Microfracture surgery is when the doctor inserts small microfractures into the femur bone. The small fractures then bleed ultimately creating a cushion in place of the the cartilage (aka meniscus).

There is a procedure that uses donor cartilage to restore the cushion between bones. Although not many doctors perform this operation.

Why do pro athletes choose microfracture instead of the transplant? Speaking from personal experience... I had the meniscus transplant 10 years ago and played 4 yrs of college softball without problem. You'd think this would be more common than the microfracture????

I don't know the answer to your question, but you can find some more info on the procedure here.
