Mid-Combine Mock Draft (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I'll preface this with saying that I outright stole the team needs from Scott Wright of nflcountdown. They were included after every pick as well as previously drafted players to make it easier to follow along. I tried to go over many other mocks here in the pool, as well as the "pro's" and to pay special attention to the fans' reactions to thier specific teams. This mock is based much more on team need than BPA, though I did go that route when it was a glaring discrepancy. I tried my best not to ignore likely draft spots and keep from moving them more than a couple spots from where I (heavily influenced by everybody else since I don't claim to be a college expert) had them ranked. I believe many mocks have been undervaluing the OTs, pass rushers, and I feel that the LBs will get a slight bump from the recent success of early-pick LBs. I don't think the QBs or RBs in this draft are especially good or deep, so please don't bash me too much for Stafford falling out of the top 10, or Sanchez falling out of the 1st.

1. Detroit - Jason Smith, OT, Baylor – Detroit fans scream QB or defense, but nobody can deny that a top OT helps the QB, and a better line improves the passing game, the running game, a more balanced, effective offense in turn helps the defense. Jason Smith has solidified the #1 OT spot.

1. Quarterback: Daunte Culpepper could not find a job for the first half of last season, Dan Orlovsky is a free agent and Drew Stanton could not even get on the field for an awful 0-16 squad.

2. Cornerback: This was already a major need before they opted to let Leigh Bodden leave. It's not a stretch to suggest that they really don't have a single starting-caliber cover guy on the roster.

3. Offensive Line: Jeff Backus is going to be 32-years-old and his play has left something to be desired at left tackle in recent years. Meanwhile the situation is even more dire inside at guard.

2. St. Louis - Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia – If Monroe could keep Williams at guard, he’s good enough to go top 5 and needing two tackles, this is as good as it gets when the #1 OT is already off the board.

1. Offensive Tackle: Pro Bowler Orlando Pace is now well into his thirties and can't seem to stay healthy lately while Alex Barron has not lived up to his enormous potential and will be replaced.

2. Cornerback: Tye Hill has not lived up to his status as a first round pick and both Ronald Bartell and Fakhir Brown are unrestricted free agents. What they need is a true #1 cover guy.

3. Middle Linebacker: It appears the team has finally come to the realization that Will Witherspoon is better suited to be playing outside but that means they'll need a new starter in the middle.

3. Kansas City - Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest – The safest pick in the draft and a desperate need as 35 year old D.Edwards didn’t finish the season last year. Orakpo is an option, as rush ends are held in higher regard than LBs, but recent studs like Mayo & Willis have upped the value a little.

1. Defensive End: After trading away Jared Allen they went on to set the NFL's all-time record for fewest sacks in a season, with a grand total of just ten all year long. What else needs to be said ?

2. Quarterback: Their new regime has a huge decision to make on Tyler Thigpen, who put up some relatively impressive numbers down the stretch last year but has just a 1-10 record as a starter.

3. Linebacker: Derrick Johnson is the only returning starter who is guaranteed a roster spot, let alone a starting job, next year as both Donnie Edwards and Demorrio Williams could be jettisoned.

4. Seattle - Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss – Oher is not top-5 quality, but starter quality is definitely not a given at their next pick. WRs have good value in the 2nd & 3rd, so they pass on Crabtree. Raji is not top 5 quality either and DTs can also be found later.

1. Defensive Tackle: Rocky Bernard is an unrestricted free agent and while Brandon Mebane is okay at one starting spot they could still use that true impact player on the interior of their d-line.

2. Wide Receiver: Deion Branch has not lived up to expectations, Nate Burleson certainly isn't anything special, Bobby Engram is 36-years-old and none of their youngsters have stepped up yet.

3. Offensive Tackle: Future Hall of Famer Walter Jones is now 35-years-old and coming off microfracture surgery on his knee so it just might be time to start searching for his eventual successor.

5. Cleveland - Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas – Orakpo could be the pass-rusher Cleveland needs to help out a less than stellar secondary. He could end up being a Woodley-type 3-4 OLB for the Browns on the strong side, and hope that frees up Wimbley a little opposite him.

1. Cornerback: Eric Wright is solid at one starting spot but Brandon McDonald was up and down last year, Daven Holly is coming off a major knee injury and Travis Daniels is a free agent.

2. Linebacker: Kamerion Wimbley's play really dropped off last year, Willie McGinest is most likely going to retire and ILB Andra Davis is a free agent who might not be brought back next season.

3. Running Back: Jamal Lewis is still effective but he's going to be 30-years-old and has a lot of miles on his tires. Jason Wright is also a free agent and there really is not much depth to speak of.

6. Cincinnati - Everette Brown, DE, Florida State – Andre Smith or Everette Brown. Either way, it’s Cincy so it’s also a likely bust and their two top targets will be the bigger bust candidates in the top 15. They got some production out of the DTs last year, or Raji would also make sense.

1. Running Back: Cedric Benson is a free agent and while he will most likely be back next year that is still up in the air right now. Chris Perry is also a free agent but he is now officially a B-U-S-T.

2. Offensive Tackle: Levi Jones is starting to get up there in years and he has dealt with a lot of injuries lately. Stacy Andrews is a free agent again and is coming off a late-season knee injury.

3. Center: Eric Ghiaciuc is an unrestricted free agent and has been a big disappointment anyway so they will likely look to bring in a premier pivot who can help anchor their shaky offensive line.

7. Oakland - Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech – Al Davis has stockpiled plenty of late-round, speed WRs. What he’s missing is a dependable possession WR since Curry fell off the map and was cut. Perfect need meets value here.

1. Wide Receiver: Javon Walker was a huge bust and Johnnie Lee Higgins led the team in receptions by a wideout with 22 last year. In fact all of their receivers combined caught just 82 passes.

2. Offensive Tackle: Kwame Harris was a disappointment and Cornell Green is not starting material. Mario Henderson did show some potential but they still need at least one more top blocker.

3. Defensive Back: Nnamdi Asomugha is probably the only starting-caliber cornerback on the roster and outside of Gibril Wilson there is not much to get excited about at safety either.

8. Jacksonville - Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State – Two value meets need picks in a row as Jenkins is worth more than #8. Andre Smith could have gone here if he hadn’t been such a bonehead the last couple months.

1. Offensive Tackle: Khalif Barnes is a free agent and they probably don't want him back anyway considering his checkered track record and the franchises renewed emphasis on character.

2. Wide Receiver: Jerry Porter was released after one extremely disappointing season and Reggie Williams is a free agent. Matt Jones made some strides last year but they still need more help.

3. Cornerback: When Drayton Florence was signed as a free agent last offseason they moved Brian Williams inside to safety but Florence is gone and there is a hole opposite Rashean Mathis.

9. Green Bay - BJ Raji, DT, Boston College – Not a pick I like, as I feel Raji does not make a good 3-4 NT. I wanted to put Maualuga here, but I think Hawk can play OLB opposite Kampman and they still have Barnett & Poppinga in the middle (serviceable if nothing else). RB could be worth a look here, but I don’t think any of this year’s class is worthy of top 10 concideration.

1. Outside Linebacker: We will see how Aaron Kampman handles the big transition from defensive end to outside linebacker but even if it works out they'll still have to add another pass rusher.

2. Offensive Tackle: Right tackle Mark Tauscher is a free agent and probably won't be back next season. Left tackle Chad Clifton will be 33-years-old and hasn't exactly been the picture of health.

3. Cornerback: Al Harris is in his mid-30's and probably doesn't have much left in the tank. On the other side Charles Woodson isn't getting any younger and there is talk of moving him safety.

10. San Francisco - Rey Maualuga, LB, USC – The QBs continue to slide! Singletary is in charge, and wouldn’t he love to have Rey alongside Willis as his 3-4 ILBs? OUCH! Steven Jackson goes on I.R. after draft day!

1. Offensive Tackle: Joe Staley has shown the ability to excel on either the left or right side but guys like Jonas Jennings, Adam Snyder and Barry Sims haven't gotten the job done opposite him.

2. Quarterback: Shaun Hill has shown some flashes but he isn't the type of guy you win championships with and even their new Head Coach Mike Singletary seems to agree with that sentiment.

3. Linebacker: To be more specific they need a top pass rusher outside since Manny Lawson only generated 3 sacks last season. They will also need to find an upgrade over Takeo Spikes inside.

11. Buffalo - Aaron Maybin, OLB/DE, Penn State – Pass rushers are what you want... a pass rusher is what you get. Cushing is a possibility, and Andre Smith’s January/February ineptitude continue to hurt himself and teams in need.

1. Tight End: Many of this team's problems in '08 were the result of a stagnant offense and an upgrade at tight end would help to remedy that problem and aid the development of Trent Edwards.

2. Defensive End: Aaron Schobel's production has really dropped off the past couple of years and nobody else has stepped up. The Bills actually ranked a dismal 28th in the league in sacks in 2008.

3. Outside Linebacker: Angelo Crowell just missed the entire 2008 season with a knee injury and is also a free agent so they might need to find someone capable of starting on the weakside.

12. Denver - Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss – Another bad 3-4 NT pick, but Denver and Green bay are both making a transition to a defense they have no business running. May as well throw something to the wall that might stick. I like Cushing or Ayers here, but they’re not ready to come off the board yet.

1. Safety: Quite possibly the worst starting duo in the league last year. Marlon McCree was a bust (again) and is a free agent while the very underwhelming Marquand Manuel was also sent packing.

2. Defensive Tackle: Dewayne Robertson was a cap casualty and Marcus Thomas isn't a good fit as a 3-4 nose tackle so they'll have to bring in a big space-eater to achor the middle of their "D".

3. Linebacker: After utilizing small, speedy types for so many years the Broncos will be on the lookout for a new breed of linebacker as they make their dramatic transition to a 3-4 scheme.

13. Washington - Andre Smith, OT, Alabama – Injuries on the line have decimated this team for the last 3 years. Age is becoming as big of a concern as injuries, and Snyder has never seemed to shy away from character issues. They get the best OT talent at a discount, but is it fool’s gold?

1. Offensive Line: Chris Samuels isn't getting any younger, Jon Jansen is well past his prime and Stephon Heyer disappointed despite being handed the starting right tackle job early last year.

2. Defensive End: Jason Taylor was hurt and only notched 3.5 sacks in 2008 and will be 35-years-old next season while the depth behind both him and Andre Carter is basically non-existent.

3. Defensive Tackle: Cornelius Griffin doesn't have much left in the old tank while the duo of Kedric Gholston and Anthony Montgomery have combined for just 6.5 sacks in six NFL seasons.

14. New Orleans - Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest – The safeties suck in this draft, and Cushing would help but a CB with good ball skills to play opposite Porter is going to be a big need soon, and he could play nickel now.

1. Safety: Despite investing second round picks on Josh Bullocks and Roman Harper and signing Kevin Kaesviharn as a free agent in recent years this is still a weak point on their porous defense.

2. Outside Linebacker: Scott Fujita and Scott Shanle have held their own as starters the past few years but neither one of them are the type of impact players that will scare opposing offenses.

3. Cornerback: Mike McKenzie can't seem to stay healthy and recent offseason acquisitions such as Jason David, Randall Gay and Usama Young have failed to address this long-time problem.

15. Houston - Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri – Not a big need, but Maclin is by far the BPA (after putting up a delicious combine) and the Houston offense is playoff caliber now. Adding a legit threat opposite AJ would allow this offense to carry a sub-standard defense into the post season.

1. Safety: This franchise has never had an impact safety since they entered the league back in 2002 (Sorry Will Demps) and they might lose half of the marginal guys they do have as free agents.

2. Defensive End: Mario Williams has emerged as one of the best in the business but Anthony Weaver has been a disappointment on the other side and there is really little or no depth to speak of.

3. Outside Linebacker: Before getting hurt Zach Diles was emerging as a solid starter but Morlon Greenwood was released and who knows if Xavier Adibi can replace him on the weakside.

16. San Diego - Eben Britton, OT, Arizona – The defense is not as bad as some believe. Merriman coming back will be huge. Cromartie at full health will be huge. Despite their short-comings, they played well down the stretch and OT needs to be shored up.

1. Offensive Line: Right guard Mike Goff is 33-years-old and a free agent and, even though he's solid, they could probably find an upgrade for former sixth rounder Jeromey Clary at right tackle.

2. Defensive End: Igor Olshansky is a free agent and it doesn't look like the team is going to make much of an effort to re-sign him so they will have to bring in some reinforcements and depth.

3. Safety: Eric Weddle is definitely an emerging young player but Clinton Hart is just a journeyman who could be upgraded. There really is not much to speak of in the way of quality depth either.

17. New York Jets - Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU – The Jets get lucky, as SD almost stole their player at # 16. Jackson is the best 3-4 DE prospect in the draft.

1. Quarterback: The retirement of Brett Favre leaves the starting job in the hands of Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff or Erik Ainge, which has to be a very scary proposition for a possible contender.

2. Cornerback: Darrelle Revis is a rising star in the league and Dwight Lowery was certainly a very pleasant surprise as a rookie but after those two there's basically little or no depth to speak of.

3. Defensive End: Even though he is going to be 32-years-old this summer Shaun Ellis is still pretty solid on one side but Kenyon Coleman is definitely nothing to write home about opposite him.

18. Chicago - Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia – Orton will work for now, but Grossman’s got to go. Stafford is clearly the cream of the QB crop, and he can’t be allowed to fall any further. Many teams will have been on the phone to get this pick in before Tampa. If Stafford were already off the board, Chicago would likely look elsewhere.

1. Wide Receiver: Devin Hester has made strides but Brandon Lloyd is a free agent, Marty Booker was cut, Rashied Davis isn't starting material and Earl Bennett really disappointed as a rookie.

2. Offensive Line: John Tait is leaning towards retirement, John St. Clair is a free agent who'll attract serious attention and Chris Williams has back issues. They could also use more depth inside.

3. Defensive End: Adewale Ogunleye, Alex Brown and Mark Anderson have been effective pass rushers in the past but their play dropped off and they need to bring in some reinforcements.

19. Tampa Bay -Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland – With Galloway’s career over, somebody fell in love with a 2nd round WR that ran a sub 4.4 40-yard dash.

1. Wide Receiver: Antonio Bryant will most likely be re-signed but Joey Galloway is going to be 38-years-old next season and Michael Clayton is a free agent who will definitely be moving on.

2. Defensive Tackle: Jovan Haye is a free agent and while he and Chris Hovan form an okay starting duo they won't make anyone forget those days of Warren Sapp and Booger McFarland.

3. Defensive End: Gaines Adams is really starting to come into his own but Kevin Carter is well past his prime at 35 going on 36 and Greg "Stylez G." White saw his production drop off last season.

20. Detroit (from Dallas) - Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois - A defender you Detroit fans (if there are any left) can be proud of. Pettigrew got consideration here, as he would improve both the run & pass offense, and Cushing did as well, but CBs are a more precious commodity.

Drafted: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

21. Philadelphia - Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State – They wanted a RB, but with both on the board and another pick soon, they can afford to wait. All the OTs worth this spot have been taken, and Pettigrew is like adding an OT that can catch. Celek is a good pass catcher, but Pettigrew offers the versatility to improve both the run and the pass.

1. Offensive Tackle: Both Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan are in their mid-30's and unrestricted free agents while Winston Justice has not shown he is capable of being a decent starter in the pros.

2. Tight End: L.J. Smith is a free agent and after a disappointing 2008 season (37 Rec | 298 Yards | 3 TD's) the team probably isn't too eager to use the franchise tag and pay him $4.5 million again.

3. Running Back: Brian Westbrook is undoubtedly one of the best in the business when he is healthy but it seems like he is nicked up and a "Gametime Decision" more often than not these days.

22. Minnesota - Alex Mack, C/G, California – Eventual replacement for Birk, but he can compete for either spot on the right side of the line as well. Sanchez’ fall draws gasps from the NFLN crew who all KNEW he would go here (insert A.Rodgers/Leinart camera shot).

1. Quarterback: Tarvaris Jackson failed in both of his stints as a starter last year and while Gus Frerotte was somewhat effective he is going to be 38-years-old and is not the long-term solution.

2. Right Tackle: Ryan Cook continues to disappoint as a starter, former second round bust Marcus Johnson is a free agent and the versatile Artis Hicks is much, much better suited for a backup role.

3. Cornerback: Antoine Winfield is one of the best in the biz but Cedric Griffin has his ups and downs, Marcus McCauley has been a big bust and Charles Gordon is coming off a serious ankle injury.

23. New England - Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State – “####!!!” we collectively shout. And you thought they looked good on offense before? The BPA, a need, and a scary thought.

1. Defensive Back: It looks like Rodney Harrison is finished and James Sanders is just an average starter while young corner's Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite struggled as rookies.

2. Linebacker: Both outside 'backers Mike Vrabel and Adalius Thomas are now over 30-years-old and coming off disappointing seasons while Tedy Bruschi appears to be on his last legs inside.

3. Offensive Tackle: Matt Light is okay at left tackle but they could sure do a whole lot better than Nick Kaczur and Ryan O'Callaghan on the right side and overall depth is needed as well.

24. Atlanta - Sen’Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn – Local prospect fills a big need and is highly underrated by those that didn’t get to see him on a weekly basis.

1. Defensive Tackle: The fact that they just about selected Glenn Dorsey over Matt Ryan last year speaks volumes about how badly the franchise wants to address the interior of their defensive line.

2. Safety: Lawyer Milloy is 35-years-old and also a free agent so they will need to bring in someone to succeed him at strong safety awfully soon, if not next year then in the very near future.

3. Outside Linebacker: This is a position that will likely undergo some major changes in the offseason, with Keith Brooking and Michael Boley both candidates to be playing for new teams in '09.

25. Miami - Brian Cushing, OLB, USC – Tuna gets his typical top-notch OLB.

1. Linebacker: Channing Crowder is an unrestricted free agent who may not be back next season and they could do a whole lot better than Matt Roth on the opposite side of Joey Porter outside.

2. Wide Receiver: Ted Ginn has yet to live up to his Top 10 draft status and while they were productive at times last year neither Greg Camarillo or Davone Bess are starting material in the pros.

3. Defensive Back: They do have some solid players at both cornerback and safety but they lack a true difference maker at either spot and need to bring in someone who's a big play threat.

26. Baltimore - D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt – This one’s a no-brainer. Biggest need, and big value. Newsome looks like a genius again, but this time he had nothing to do with it.

1. Cornerback: To nobody's surprise injury-prone Chris McAlister was a salary cap casualty and Samari Rolle has battled health problems as well. There really isn't much depth to speak of either.

2. Linebacker: Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs and Bart Scott are all unrestricted free agents and odds are at least one of them won't be back next season. Overall depth is probably a concern as well.

3. Wide Receiver: Derrick Mason is still effective but he is 35-years-old and so far none of the young wideouts they've drafted in recent years (i.e. Demetrius Williams) have stepped up.

27. Indianapolis - Percy Harvin, WR, Florida – Is Gonzales for real, or a slot guy? Harvin will tell us for sure.

1. Defensive Tackle: Quinn Pitcock unexpectedly retired before last season, starter Ed Johnson was released early in the year and even Darrell Reid recently ran into some trouble off-the-field.

2. Wide Receiver: Marvin Harrison is going to be 37-years-old next season and his production has really begun to drop off so there is a good chance he will be sent packing in the near future.

3. Defensive Back: They signed Kelvin Hayden to a new five-year deal worth $43 million but that will limit their ability to re-sign Marlin Jackson next year. More depth at safety is needed as well.

28. Philadelphia (from Carolina) - William Beatty, OT, Connecticut – Moreno almost went here, but some decent backs will be available later. Philly fills two of their biggest needs in the 1st round.

Drafted: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

29. New York Giants - Clay Matthews, OLB, USC – I disagree that WR is a big need for NY. Plax may be back, S.Smith looks good, Hixon is adequate and they still have S.Moss who (like Santana) could just take an extra year to polish up.

1. Wide Receiver: Even if Plaxico Burress isn't spending next season in prison he'll most likely face a long suspension and / or be released so they need a stud playmaker in the passing game.

2. Outside Linebacker: There is a good chance Mathias Kiwanuka will stay at defensive end and if that is indeed the case they need to find someone much better than Danny Clark on the strongside.

3. Defensive Tackle: The G-Men have a bunch of solid players such as Barry Cofield, Fred Robbins and Jay Alford on the interior of their defensive line but they still lack a true difference maker.

30. Tennessee - Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee – Johnson will put up better #s, but Tennessee is smarter than that, especially when it comes to defense. Currently the steal of the draft and easily BPA.

1. Wide Receiver: In 2008 their top two leading pass catchers were an H-Back and a Running Back. Enough said. Sooner or later this franchise is going to have to bring in a legitimate #1 wideout.

2. Middle Linebacker: They have been able to get by with Stephen Tulloch and Ryan Fowler but neither is anything more than an average starter in the NFL so an upgrade would not hurt.

3. Defensive Line: If Albert Haynesworth leaves as a free agent defensive tackle will all of the sudden become a major concern and they could probably use another pass rusher outside as well.

31. Arizona - Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia – Slam dunk. He shouldn’t have fallen this far. He weighed over 215 and is a legit every-down back.

1. Running Back: Despite playing well in the playoffs Edgerrin James will not be back next season and Tim Hightower failed to impress in his stint as a starter. J.J. Arrington is also a free agent.

2. Offensive Line: The free agent signing of Al Johnson didn't work out so they had to start former undrafted free agent Lyle Sendlein at center. Also, Mike Gandy is just an average left tackle.

3. Linebacker: Karlos Dansby is a free agent and while they have some pretty solid options outside like Bertrand Berry (free agent), Chike Okeafor and Travis LaBoy they lack a true difference maker.

32. Pittsburgh - Jamon Meredith, OT, South Carolina – Maybe 2nd round quality, but 1st round potential and it improves two positions at once by allowing Colon to move back into RG where he is better suited.

1. Offensive Tackle: Both Marvel Smith and Max Starks are unrestricted free agents and even if Smith is re-signed he has crossed the 30-year-old mark and has some durability concerns.

2. Offensive Guard: Chris Kemoeatu is an unrestricted free agent but even if they are able to bring him back into the fold this offseason they could still use more quality depth on the interior.

3. Cornerback: They have quantity but what they lack is quality and if Bryant McFadden finds a new team in free agency they will be forced to bring in at least one more starting-caliber cover guy.

Round Two

33. Detroit - Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State – Potential stud QB at the top of the 2nd, and all 3 top needs have been met by pick #33!

Drafted: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor - Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois

34. Kansas City - Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech – Unreal measurables and originally a consideration for some in the 1st round, KC gets a huge shot in the arm over the last couple drafts for their defense.

Drafted: Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest

35. St. Louis - Mark Sanchez, QB, USC – An impending need meets falling value. St. Louis needs defensive help, but if you need a franchise QB now, it’s already too late.

Drafted: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

36. Cleveland - Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut – Gotta fill the holes here.

Drafted: Brian Orakpo, DE

37. Seattle - Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina – For all that groaned when they passed up Crabtree, they knew that Nicks, Britt or Robiske would be here.

Drafted: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

38. Cincinnati - Max Unger, OL, Oregon – Shoring up the trenches is what this team needs to do to survive in the AFCN.

Drafted: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

39. Jacksonville - Ziggy Hood, DT, Missouri – Unfortunately, OTs are not worthy here, and Britt is not up to Matt Jones’ level of play last year so is not the need that most believe. The Jags did get run on last year, and the defense ranked nowhere near where they were used to being.

Drafted: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

40. Oakland - Clint Sintim, LB, Virginia – Had they known Britt would still be on the board, they may have passed on Crabtree... wait. Never mind. It’s Al Davis. Some good DTs on the board, but he shuns them for another LB. Thankfully, this one is worth it and may round out the best, young LB corps in the league.

Drafted: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

41. Green Bay - Larry English, LB/DE, Northern Illinois– Continuing the transition to the 3-4, this may keep Hawk in the middle – a big step up at ILB.

Drafted: BJ Raji, DT, Boston College

42. Buffalo – Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina – A true receiving threat at TE could help an offense that has little excuse for its ineffectiveness.

Drafted: Aaron Maybin, OLB/DE, Penn State

43. San Francisco -LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh – It’s been said that SF would like to compliment Gore and ease some of his touches. If Singletary gets his way, this defense and running game turn a pass-happy, weak defense into a smashmouth team reminiscent of his old Bears teams.

Drafted: Rey Maualuga, LB, USC

44. Miami (from Washington) - Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers – Bess and Camarillo may, or may not be what they need opposite Ted Ginn. Britt almost certainly is. Laurinaitis is an option here too.

Drafted: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC – Tuna gets his typical top-notch OLB.

45. New York Giants (from New Orleans) - Macho Harris, CB, Virginia Tech – Age and depth are becoming a concern and they have a little time to groom a young CB.

Drafted: Clay Matthews, LB/DE, USC

46. Houston - Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan – May be the best combination of need vs. value in the 2nd round.

Drafted: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

47. New England (from San Diego) - James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State– Underrated value pick, just like we’re used to seeing from NE. The new Ted Johnson to go with the new Bruschi (Mayo).

Drafted: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State

48. Denver - Patrick Chung, S, Oregon - Terrific luck for Denver if the best strong safety in this class falls to them in the 2nd. A big headhunter with range.

Drafted: Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss

49. Chicago - Andy Levitre, OL, Oregon State– Added depth and competition for an O-line that hasn’t provided a lot of running room or time to pass recently. Could start at guard and backup T.

Drafted: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

50. Tampa Bay - Fili Moala, DT, USC – Finally! Two years in a row Tampa does something to try and bring back that defense that has one foot in the grave.

Drafted: Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland

51. Dallas - Zach Follett, LB, California – A good fit as a 3-4 ILB who is a thumper and is good at shedding blockers. William Moore does not get consideration as a Roy Williams clone.

1. Safety: It's clear that Roy Williams is not a good fit in "Big D" anymore so unless Anthony Henry moves inside, as has been rumored, they'll have to bring in a replacement from the outside.

2. Defensive Line: DE Chris Canty is a free agent who will likely get some significant offers on the open market and it doesn't look as though DT Tank Johnson will be brought back next year either.

3. Inside Linebacker: Zach Thomas is going to be a free agent and will also turn 36-years-old next season while former second round pick Kevin Burnett is due to hit the open market as well.

52. Philadelphia - Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa – Their future chain-mover/goalline back.

Drafted: William Beatty, OT, Connecticut; Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

53. New York Jets - Coye Francies, CB, San Jose State – 1st round physical ability and could be a future starter. Depth at worst.

Drafted: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

54. Minnesota - Ron Brace, DT, Boston College – It’s time to think about what to do after Pat Williams.

Drafted: Alex Mack, C/G, California

55. Atlanta - Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri – Not the blocker you’d like when you have a pounder like Turner, but when you have a young QB like Ryan and you can add more to the arsenal of an already dangerous offense, well...

Drafted: Sen’Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn

56. Miami -Sean Smith, DB, Utah - Smith has the size to cover large WRs in the endzone (see Moss, Randy).

Drafted: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers; Brian Cushing, OLB, USC

57. Baltimore – Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State – Will Clayton ever be a go-to guy? Will Mason last another year? Another underrated pick falls into Newsome’s eager hands.

Drafted: D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt

58. New England - Jarron Gilbert, DT, San Jose State – Nice depth, and possible replacement for Seymore eventually.

Drafted: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State; James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State

59. Carolina - Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State – Nate Davis is a strong candidate here, but I think they find an adequate backup/future in FA or next year’s draft.

1. Defensive Tackle: Their lack of depth was exposed when Ma'ake Kemoeatu went down with an injury last year. Even when everyone is healthy they lack a difference maker on the interior.

2. Quarterback: Jake Delhomme is in his mid-30's and after that 5 interception performance in the playoffs they must start thinking about the future. If nothing else they could use a better backup.

3. Wide Receiver: D.J. Hackett was a disappointment, Muhsin Muhammad is going to be 36-years old and Dwayne Jarrett has only caught 16 balls with zero touchdowns his first two seasons.

60. New York Giants - James Casey, WR/TE, Rice - They need a WR or at least another offensive weapon. Casey is a weapon, just of a different sort.

Drafted: Clay Matthews, LB/DE, USC; Macho Harris, CB, Virginia Tech

61. Indianapolis - Asher Allen, CB, Georgia - Turnovers is what helped this defense before, and they need to get back to it.

Drafted: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

62. Tennessee - Jairus Byrd, CB, Oregon - Needed depth in the secondary.

Drafted: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

63. Arizona - Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma - Grimm, Whiz and Moreno need depth, if not possible competition for starting jobs on the O-line.

Drafted: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

64. Pittsburgh - Eric Wood, OL, Louisville - Another addition to the O-line, and Idiot Boxer rejoices (really, Colbert doesn't want to get caught with his pants down again when it concerns the O-line).

Drafted: Jamon Meredith, OT, South Carolina (but could have easily been English)

i don't think Detroit fans are clamoring for a QB...quiet the opposite from talking to people. Also, I think LB is a lock for the 20th pick.

Vill

I would be one happy Lions fan if they made these first 3 picks as you have it.

If not Vontae, a Cushing/Matthews/Marks/Petti would be great as well.

I'd be a pretty happy Steelers fan if they can land Meredith and Wood with their first two picks. A Jarron-Gilbert-type in the 2nd would be pretty nice for them as well, but I don't have any arguments with them double dipping OL at all with how your scenario shakes out.

Good work.

I'm not sold on Freeman over Sanchez, but maybe.

If the first 14 picks shake out that way, I think we'll see Houston trade down with Chicago as they go after Maclin.

As intriguing as a Rey Willis combo is, can't see it happening.

What has Ben asked for this year?If I'm the Steelers, I hit OL, OL, OL, and OL some more.

A very well thought out mock from Cookiemonster. Many of the picks are perfect fits for the team systems they would be going into.

As a Packer fan I would be very happy with these 1st two rounds.

Nice work with the Lions as well. Vontae Davis is a little scary though.....I know he's got every bit as much attitude his brother does who was benched by Singletary this year. Lions probably don't want any prima donnas.

As a guy who picked for NE in Andy's 1st mock draft, I congratulate you on your Pats draft taking BPA b2b and then adding one of the best 3-4 DE's in the draft. Nice work.

Good draft.

I love the Detroit draft.

If Detroit had the chance to get Freeman or Sanchez after filling two needs it would really help the team improve.

I am not sold on Stafford as the #1 overall.

NE got Gilbert just a few picks before us, or I would have. He seems to be getting a little more attention every day, and I didn't want this to turn into another Idiot Boxer vs. other-Steeler fans thread about why they would take L.English in the late 1st (which is a move I almost made).

Yeah, I saw that. Hence why I said "...with how your scenario shakes out."

See, now that you've brought this up I think you need to go back and change your round one pick.....just for pure entertainment value. Too bad IB already saw it.

I would be very happy if Denver was able to get Chung in the 2nd. But I don't think Peria would be a good fit for the 3-4 nose. If the draft falls this way, I wouldn't be surprised if they took Tyson Jackson instead.

No Donald Brown or Pat White?
Donald Brown was in concideration at the end of the 2nd, but just missed out. Pat White I have mid 3rd to early 4th.
I think his combine performance may have boosted White into the second round.
He's Seneca Wallace to me. We'll see how he does in WR drills at his pro-day 1st. Right now, he's a guy who could give you 5-8 plays a game. Next year he could give you 10-12. Maybe he goes Kordell Stewart and starts for a few years. I don't think he's a Steve Young.

I had every intention of posting a scathing reply to your comments. However, since ive never seen Wallace play in college and his 2003 combine results are very close to White's, Ill have to leave it at that. However, White has almost 2 inches on Wallace as well as an amazing college career where he leaves as the leader in rushing yards ever for a college QB.

I don't think height is White's problem. It's the weight, or lack thereof, as at 180 pounds he will get crushed if he takes too many hits by NFL linebackers at that weight. If he can bulk up to 190-200 pounds, I think he's a very good QB prospect.

The effort is awesome on this one... I can't see the QBs falling like this.
Well, the Minny/Rosenfels rumors suggest that Stafford/Freeman/Sanchez won't be available, or that they're not franchise QBs (or maybe just Stafford is). Point is, they'd like to upgrade the QB situation by going after an OK starter in Sage rather than through the draft.

I think you nailed the Jaguars needs but I wouldn't be surprised if the position picks were flipped with them snagging Raji in the first and a corner in the second. We have built around stud DT's in the past and Mathis was a second rounder.

Nicely done.

I disagree with more than a few (notably Freeman before Sanchez, though I'd be happy if it fell that way for my Rams; and the lack of Donald Brown, who I think is a lock for the second round/late first) but wanted to put this forth for the sake of discussion:

You say: "Oakland - Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech – Al Davis has stockpiled plenty of late-round, speed WRs. What he’s missing is a dependable possession WR since Curry fell off the map and was cut. Perfect need meets value here."

Given that Davis tends to overvalue certain traits in his players, wouldn't it be entirely possible that he would take Maclin over Crabtree, much to the surprise of everyone, due to Maclin's combination of speed, hands, and YAC ability?

Has Raji had a bad combine? I would think he's a potential sleeper choice for the Chiefs who are switching to a 3-4 defense which would push Dorsey to DE. I could also see them go with one of the OT's opposite Albert. While LB is a huge need, I'm just not sure Curry ranks a 3rd overall selection. Ideally, the Chiefs trade down a few slots for a team wanting perhaps Stafford.

Maclin didn't exactly dazzle at the combine, I think Al has a heart attack if Crabtree drops to Oakland.

Neither did Crabtree. I just feel there's a good chance Davis would look at Maclin's skillset and value it higher than Crabtree's. With most people in agreement that they're the #1 and #2 WR in the draft, it's certainly not out of the question that the #2 would wind up being taken first.

Well, we'll agree to disagree there. I think he'll overvalue Crabtree's 41 TD college career more than Maclin's 40 yard dash.Regardless, they'll both make great pros.

I think Curry is in serious contention for the #1 overall. He certainly warrants a nod to the Chiefs at #3, who will need stud LBs to even try to make a 3-4 work (if that's indeed what they do). If they don't, D.Johnson & Curry would make a hell of a pair of young LBs. I don't think Raji has had a bad combine, I think he's a little overrated. He's good, of course, but I don't think he's head-and-shoulders above Jerry & Marks. He played along side Brace, and I think they both benefit each other's presence.

Given that Davis tends to overvalue certain traits in his players, wouldn't it be entirely possible that he would take Maclin over Crabtree, much to the surprise of everyone, due to Maclin's combination of speed, hands, and YAC ability?
The guy won the BILETNIKOFF award (a guy not really known for his top-flight speed and Al's best WR ever) two years in a row. One as a Frosh and again as a Soph. If Davis overvalues anything, it's hardware. Look at the muck of overrated Heisman winners, and SB MVPs (Larry Brown anyone, Desmond Howard?) he has employed over the last decade or two.

i loved this one too. Only thing I don't see happening is the QB's falling like that. There are always teams every year that will fall in love with a guy and trade up to get them. If a team loves Stafford, and out of 32 teams, odds are 1 will, then they'll trade up and nab him at say the 12th pick with Denver at the latest, in my opinion. Same with Sanchez. Someone will take these guys no later than mid to late first, but I loved reading this one for sure. Made more sense than most of these fantasy based mocks that we see around

Very much agree with the trading up to get Stafford after top 10. If I were able to mock potential trades though, I would have won the lottery 3 times too. Just didn't want to go there. Sanchez, I don't believe is even the #2 QB and hardly has potential to land in the late 1st.

I think Curry is in serious contention for the #1 overall. He certainly warrants a nod to the Chiefs at #3, who will need stud LBs to even try to make a 3-4 work (if that's indeed what they do). Yea Curry has raised his stock and may be the pick but you can't rule out QB or OT. I could see them taking Curry then a 2nd round NT and moving Dorsey to DE though. That pretty much gives their defense a makeover to go with their young DB's.At this point I'm also going to say that the WR's drop.

Moving Dorsey to DE in a 3-4? A 6'1" DE in a 3-4? You don't see that much.

Lots of good 3-4 DE and OLB depth in this draft. Why would the WRs drop? This has been called by many to be an outstanding WR class, as well as weak at QB & RB. Granted good, deep drafts can cause the top couple to drop since teams figure they can get something almost as good next round. I thought Crab falling past Seattle, and Maclin lasting 'till Houston was dropping. I only had 4 WRs in the 1st. There were 7 in '04 (Fitz, Roy, Reggie, Lee, Mi.Clayton, Jenkins & R.Woods) 6 in '05 (Braylon, Williamson, BMW, M.Jones, Ma.Clayton & Roddy). I think the poor turnout from those drafts was remembered in '06 When Santonio was the only 1st (and C.Jackson went very early 2nd) but it was also considered a very weak WR class. '07 also saw 6 go in the 1st (Calvin, Ginn, Bowe, Meachem, Buster & Gonzo). In fact, I think it's very possible to see 6 in the 1st in this draft too, but thanks to the depth I only went with 4 (Crab, Maclin, DHB & Harvin).

 Seattle and Oakland (or other teams at the top) could cause a run on WRs. Buffalo, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Miami, Baltimore, Indy, Titans and Giants could all grab a WR in the 1st - not that they will, but there's the distinct possibility that half of these teams do, along with a couple others. We could see 6 WRs in the 1st here - which would prompt FF drafters to reevaluate the late 1sts, raising their value quite a bit.

I wouldn't go clamoring over WRs in my fantasy draft if this does come to fruition. Look at the other 6 & 7 WR 1st rounds I listed. Lots of busts in those, and I see this class having some top-end bust potential too. DHB tops the list for me but could easily add Harvin, Nicks, Britt and some of the sub 4.4 guys that will all likely go late 1st or early/mid 2nd.

I'd be a pretty happy Steelers fan if they can land Meredith and Wood with their first two picks. A Jarron-Gilbert-type in the 2nd would be pretty nice for them as well, but I don't have any arguments with them double dipping OL at all with how your scenario shakes out.
NE got Gilbert just a few picks before us, or I would have. He seems to be getting a little more attention every day, and I didn't want this to turn into another Idiot Boxer vs. other-Steeler fans thread about why they would take L.English in the late 1st (which is a move I almost made).
IMO...I want Gilbert to GB in the 2nd.
