Who's his backup? I would assume that without a good MLB like him, the safeties will get more tackles.Ourlads and nfl.com depth charts show Tony Gilbert as the backup MLB, but my impression is that he's more of a career special teamer, no?nope, i dont own him but sure hate to hear it happen to anyonei wonder how it will impact the jags defense, Peterson is the heart and soul of that D(imo)Are you kidding?![]()
I do not know the extent of Stroud's injury but...Henderson and Stroud make replacing Peterson that much easier. Do not get me wrong. That is a HUGE loss to that team defense but...Putting an average to good LB behind a pair of All Pro caliber tackles is much easier than putting an average LB behind a pair of average tackles. The loss of Peterson is minimized given who he plays behind. If there is a silver lining, that might be it.nope, i dont own him but sure hate to hear it happen to anyonei wonder how it will impact the jags defense, Peterson is the heart and soul of that D(imo)Are you kidding?![]()
If Smith moves, that's the most likely scenario. Not sure Ingram is ready yet, and the coaching staff raves about Cordova more often than not.Smith moves inside & Cordova mans WLB?
Don't scare me like that. Im depending on him. That would be awful. As far as Petersons replacement. Im going with Smith. He hasnt done much on the weak side, but def is their best LB after Mikey. Really good pass rusher too, so maybe they'd rather have him on the sides? If you own Urlacher I recommend trading him asap. He is the last of my healthy draft picks.![]()

I read a Jax article early in the OTAs praising Ingram who had a marginal Senior Bowl week. I then won a little post rookie draft bidding war for him and owned him through the summer and opener. Then I read a good interview about his progress. It seemed obvious that he's a late bloomer, and while they love the kid, he's probably a year away even with this injury. Anyway, I dropped him when other players seemed more attractive and I'll be surprised if he steps in, but it is aI don't own Peterson, but something else I suspect you might want to watch for is Clint Ingram. When they drafted him there was talk of him eventually moving to MLB and the idea was they would move Peterson outside to take advantage of his speed. I have not heard anything that leads me to believe this will happen, but Im thinking you might want to watch Ingram. If he starts getting any playing time he might be worth a flyer.

Gilbert, Smith, Griesen, Ingram, Iwuh??Tony Gilbert replaced Peterson and Del Rio gave Gilbert high marks for his performance, which included three tackles. Gilbert, Daryl Smith, Nick Greisen and Brian Iwuh have all worked at middle linebacker.
Rookie third-round pick Clint Ingram got his first significant playing time of the season at outside linebacker. Based on Ingram's progress, Smith could be moved from outside linebacker to middle linebacker to make room for Ingram.
“He played good. He brought some energy. He has some quickness,” Del Rio said of Ingram.
“I can't tell you who's going to do it because I don't know yet,” Del Rio said about a replacement for Peterson."
I think so.Maybe Griesen, Ingram, Cordova.Ok, so assuming Smith slides over who's the most likely to take over the Will? Griesen?Cordova?Ingram? In that order?

There are two popular options at this point. Since the Jags are on bye this week there is time for it to change but right now these seem to be the two camps:
Option 1: MLB- Tony Gilbert, OLBs Smith, Greisen
Gilbert has proven a decent MLB in the past and this line up would keep Smith and Greisen as is so you are only changing up one spot. If they go this route, Gilbert should put up decent numbers behind Henderstroud.
Option 2: MLB- Smith, OLBs Greisen, Ingram
Smith is a natural MLB and heir apparent to Mike Peterson. Might as well see how he looks now. Smith is also easily the best LB on the Jags roster now so the middle of the field would seem the right place for him. Ingram was terribly disappointing in camp and might have been cut if he wasn't a 3rd(and 4th with the trade) round draft pick. But he's been coming on strong ever since making the team. Whoever get's the 2nd OLB spot will likely have a loose grip on it until someone stands out. Iwuh, Cordova, and possibly Gilbert should also get a chance to prove they are the starter. In truth Greisen's spot might also be in play as I think his spot was shakey before Peterson got hurt.
As you might have guessed I favor option 2. If Smith is given the MLB spot I'd not be shocked if he held onto it when Peterson came back next year. Peterson came up as an OLB and is getting older. He was injured seriously enough last season to be near useless in the playoffs and is again hurt this year. Moving to OLB might prolong his career and Smith looks every bit ready to handle MLB.
Fantasy wise the only real value here is D. Smith and possibly Gilbert or whoever plays MLB if it's not Smith. Any other Jags LB would be sharing playing time until someone plays themselves into a clear starting position. There's also some fringe talk that the Jags might run a lot of 4-2-5 with Sensabaugh as the extra DB since he's strong in run support. Basically outside of D. Smith it's a mess right now.

Strahan did tear his pec around game 5 for the Giants in 2004. He missed the remainder of the season but bounced back in 2005 with a solid campaign. I don't think this is the type of injury that lingers the way a knee might. However the player has to be smart about it. You can't really rush the healing process on a pec. Just have to be patient. Given how early in the season this occurred I wouldn't expect Peterson to be negatively effected for 2007.I was thinking Strahan had the same injury a year or two ago, but can't remember for sure. Also don't recall the length of time he was out after surgery.
Thanks for the local view. Please keep us posted on the Jags practice reports for the next few weeks. The only thing I take issue with is your last comment about Fantasy worth. I still contend that if Greisen gets the MLB job he's definitely worth a pickup and has good upside. When Antonio Pierce went down with the high ankle sprain at the end of last season, Greisen got the bulk of the reps in the middle. He notched 8 solos in the final 3 games, added a sack and a fumble recovery. That's not that far off from what Pierce put up. If Greisen gets the gig I'll be sprinting to pick him up. So slight hijack - what does this do for the rookie Ingram? Does he have enough talent to put up decent numbers or will he struggle at his position and most likely be only a 2 down backer until he becomes more familiar with the defensive scheme? I am assuming he wasn't good enough at it to get the starting nod this season. But a vote of confidence or lack of anyone else that he starts at the Will position?from rotoworld:

Fire and ice.
That might be the best way to describe the contrasting styles of Mike Peterson and Daryl Smith.
Now the latter will replace the former at middle linebacker because Peterson is out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle.
When the Jaguars held their first of two bye-week practices Wednesday, they lined up in their new linebacker set for the next game, which is Oct. 22 against the Houston Texans. Smith, who has played at outside linebacker the past two seasons, moved inside. Rookie Clint Ingram replaced Smith on the outside, and veteran Nick Greisen remained at the other outside slot.
The Jaguars hope that Smith, who played middle linebacker at Georgia Tech, can be the kind of tackling machine that Peterson was.
"Daryl will be prepared to play and take over that role," Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Smith said.
Peterson led the Jaguars in tackles in his first three seasons with the team and still has the most after five games this season with 47. Smith is second with 39, but he definitely will bring a different style to the position. While Peterson is a fiery emotional leader and one of the most quotable players on the team, Smith is a quiet, laid-back type who barely speaks above a whisper.
The Jaguars don't believe that will make a difference on the field.
"Mike is a very vocal guy, and Daryl's personality isn't as outgoing as Mike's," Mike Smith said, "but on the field, he's a very aggressive and passionate player."
Said Daryl Smith: "We're different. I know he's a more vocal guy than I am, but whatever I have to do, I'll do it."
Smith's teammates have confidence in his ability.
"Once the ball is snapped, there's fire in him," veteran safety Donovin Darius said. "Don't take kindness for weakness or his quietness for weakness. He does a great job when he's called upon."
Said safety Deon Grant: "We're not going to try to compare Daryl to Mike Pete. There's no replacement for Mike. Daryl is Daryl, and Mike is Mike. Daryl's quiet to you all, but he's not quiet out there on the football field. Daryl can step in and play the position."
Ingram, a third-round draft pick from Oklahoma, will make an even bigger transition than Smith. After being slowed by a leg contusion in training camp, Ingram was inactive the first two games and didn't receive extensive playing time until last Sunday's game against the New York Jets. However, he will be thrust into the starting lineup in just his fourth game as a professional.
"Clint's been progressing very well throughout the season," Mike Smith said. "He was injured early, but I think he'll do fine for us."
Ingram admitted that he's excited about the chance, but he's trying to stay calm. He plans to visit his parents in Texas during the bye week, but he said he won't even tell them he's now a starter unless they ask him about Peterson's absence.
"I don't outtalk myself," said Ingram, who was a starter during his last two seasons at Oklahoma. "That's one thing I learned a long time ago is never put yourself in a situation you regret because you had to open your mouth. I'm not going around bragging and doing high-fives.
"It's really unfortunate we lost like a player like Mike Pete. He's somebody I looked up to big time. I was looking forward to learning from him."
Ingram said he will know how to handle it when he makes a mistake.
"I know there will be times when you go out there and mess up, but you have to have a short memory," he said. "You can wipe it out and go to the next play and worry about it Monday when we look at the films, or we'll correct it on the sidelines with the coaches. [Otherwise] that'll ruin your whole game."
Ingram could be targeted by opposing teams because the Washington Redskins attacked the perimeter while rolling up 36 points to beat the Jaguars in overtime two weeks ago.
"I look at it as they're going away from our strength with the two big guys [defensive tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson] in the middle," Mike Smith said. "They did it efficiently, and we didn't play well in Washington. I think we matched up better against the perimeter runs [against the Jets]."
Grant said he looks forward to the challenge if teams try to exploit the Jaguars on the outside.
"I'm the type of guy [who says] attack it if you want to, and we'll shut them up," Grant said. "If they feel there's a weakness out there, come to it, and we'll see if it's really as weak as you think it is. I don't think they [the Redskins] found a weakness. We just didn't play our game."

Quick reply. I will soon be feeling the same way about Rookie Ingram as I was about Rookie Harper. I think the Jags may have better options and Ingram is a year or so away from being ready for prime time. Quick and slightly aged scouting report. Ingram is solid in run support, a pure technique tackler who brings the lumber. He is okay in pursuit, not great, angles being a bigger issue than speed. He is/was a little lost in coverage schemes late in camp and that weakness was discussed during his Senior Bowl workouts. I like him a lot more than it sounds like here because the positives are very positive and the negatives can be overcome. Perhaps he's already improved in those areas and JDR wants to see him in action. The Panthers did similar with Seward but that didn't work out. Don't be surprised if this goes the same way. I had Ingram rostered for a few weeks and now I'm hoping to get him back.So slight hijack - what does this do for the rookie Ingram? He's reasonably talented, but as CC mentions, it sounds like he needs some work on some critical fundamentals (pursuit angles, etc). He also some scheme and situation issues working against him. First, the Jags like to run more of a "stack" front, where the MLB is highlighted and the OLB stay on a given side rather than take strong and weak side responsibility. That limits the ROLB's opportunity to some extent. Smith himself, certainly a better player than Ingram right now, managed only 69 total tackles last year and was on pace for less than that this season. Secondly, with his skill set, Smith has a chance to be every bit as productive as Peterson has been in the middle and is unlikely to leave a bunch of scraps for a pursuing OLB to pick up. Ingram is going to have a very hard time overcoming those two issues to regularly fill up the boxscore. Add in his inexperience, and I don't see him as a viable option unless something gives in his favor. So slight hijack - what does this do for the rookie Ingram? As people here were quick to report, it looks like my option 2 has won out. I'm a little surprised that Greisen was already told he's in a battle for the third spot, but Jack Del Rio loves to make guys compete and I guess he thinks with the bye it will give all the possible starters time to show what they have. Smith should put up numbers very similar to Mike Pete, but I caution again against thinking that Ingram and whoever else gets the third spot will put up decent fantasy numbers. First of all Jacksonville's scheme does not make it easy for the OLB's to put up big numbers. Secondly, the Jags will continue to swap players out at both OLB spots until they feel someone has earned the starting job, this includes Ingram, Greisen, Iwuh, Cordova, and possibly Gilbert. Lastly, there is still talk that the Jags might try and run a big nickle as their base D, putting Sensabaugh into the starting lineup instead of a third LB and using Darius(or possibly Sensabaugh) as a S/OLB hybrid player. The Jags signing Ahmad Carroll might be a sign that they are considering this option as if you are going to start more DBs you'll need more DBs on roster. Thanks for the local view. That's the big question longterm. Right now I'd say it's 50/50 that Mike Pete plays another down as MLB for the Jags barring injury to D. Smith. Smith being a nature MLB and Peterson a conversion based on need is one issues, Peterson's age and recent rash of injuries is another. Moving him to OLB might prolong his career and it allows Smith to move into his natural position as the Jags MLB of the future. If Smith plays well I'd expect him to keep the job.for me a big question is looking to next yr...will smith be able to show he needs to stay in the middle allowing the jags to use peterson outside where his speed can be utilized and hopefully to also keep him healthy?Jene Bramel said:He's reasonably talented, but as CC mentions, it sounds like he needs some work on some critical fundamentals (pursuit angles, etc). Does he have enough talent to put up decent numbers or will he struggle at his position and most likely be only a 2 down backer until he becomes more familiar with the defensive scheme? I am assuming he wasn't good enough at it to get the starting nod this season. But a vote of confidence or lack of anyone else that he starts at the Will position?
Thanks for you input. Having lost Peterson in two redrafts, I feel fortunate to have acquired Smith in both cases.Cliff notes version, Smith is poised to become an IDP stud, keep an eye on things to see if anyone else warrants consideration in anything but every deep IDP leagues.
