Mike Williams (1 Viewer)

Reading the Delanie Walker thread the first thing I thought, was why won't the Lions move Mike Williams to TE?

Obviously his work ethic has something to do with it, but at 6'4" 230+ he could provide some serious mis-matches. Reading other threads about him, a lot of posters agree that his frame just isn't cut out to be 220 lbs. Why not make a position switch, get him to put on some muscle weight, and teach him blocking techniques etc.?

I have thought this exact same thing for over a year.

OK, at least I'm not way out in left field on this one.Marcus Pollard's best years are behind him. He's still adequate, but why not groom a young guy with all the physical attributes of the modern-day TE to be their main guy for the foreseeable future.Honest question from a guy that hasn't played "organized" football. Is learning the TE position easier or harder than WR. Aside from blocking assignments, it would appear at least on the surface, that there would be less route adjustments etc for a TE than for a WR.If Williams really isn't that smart, then maybe a role of reduced intelligence is the best way for him to see action.

Learning to be a TE is much more cerebral than being a WR. On running plays, WR are typically used to clear-out secondaries in decoy routes or to try to get 2nd level blocks setup for the running game in the even they find a hole. You don't hear a lot of WR's being touted as good blockers...that is why sportscasters make such a big deal out of Hines Ward, he gets after it as a blocker. TE's are expected to know blocking techniques to go along with route running. In practice, TE's will often spend time going through drills with the OL and then break-off to get reps with skill positions. There is a reason why there only a few "elite" TE's in the NFL and that's because it is highly unusual to find a TE that can be both a great blocker and great receiver. My guess is that BMW would completely wiff in his blocking assignments and still may not be much more than an average-to-good TE.

I'd like to see the Lions coaching staff actually give him an opportunity to play WR in a game before talking about moving him to TE.

I know the guy is supposed to be fat, lazy, and unmotivated but I'd like to see it for myself in an actual game before totally writing him off. He can't be any worse than Furrey, Hakim, or the already cut Bradford or Rogers.

As a receiving only option at TE or least somewhere inside where he could get an LB or S on him, one would think that would be a great matchup. They guy always had great body control and positioning to make a grab. Playing TE, he would have Winslow-like measurables, but obviously, probably cannot block for crap. But, as a receiving only option, you have to think he could have some success there.

The Lions have to get this guy on the field and see what they have in him. I bet he plays better than he practices.

As Forrest Gump's mama always said, "Fat and lazy is, as fat and lazy does."Coaches hate this guy's work ethic. So a position change isn't going to fix that.

Speaking in technical football terms, that move is just not that easy. There is so much more to playing TE than meeting a height and weight requirement. The position requires a high onfield acumen and football intelligence. It also has more real time responsibilities than the WR In no way is it as easy as reshaping and redistributing Williams' frame and weight; teaching to put a hand in the dirt and showing him how to block. As a Lions fan, I have resided myself to the fact that M. Williams is MASSIVE bust. I would love to see the team attempt to get some ROI on that pick, which would be saying I would like to see Williams' taught to play TE, but the kid is not the right intellectual fit nor is he mature enough to accept that proposition.

I think the bottom line with Mike Williams is that his work ethic sucks. And moving him to a new position will only create more hard work for a guy that can't even work hard enough get on the field at his natural position. As far as his weight goes, he's fat, thats why they want him down to 220, at 6'4" 220 he'd create more mis-matches in the red zone at WR than he would playing fat and slower at TE.

The lions have proved they can't win with him on the bench and Bradford or Furrey starting so Bradford has been shipped out of town. Furrey will soon find the slot when BMW takes over. It's either that or lose every game because furrey and co. scare no one. You all will see in the coming weeks what I already know. Martz and maranelli have finally woke up from their fantasy of bradford, furrey and drummond.

This story I found LINK certainly supports what your saying, but the guy I'm interested in is Shaun Bodiford. The Lions have been very high on him since they signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent this year. He missed the first three games nursing a knee injury and in my mind is no coincidence the day they activate him to the roster, they let Bradford go.
