Million Dollar Player (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question but will try. My question is.....I have searched EVERYWHERE on the net with no results for what I thought would be an easy answer. Who was the first football player to get a one million dollar contract, either signing out of college for the milliom, or an existing player? I have called the NFL in New York, the players association in D.C., local radio stations, newspapers. no one knows! Some one here has to know. Thanks... Bob

Gosh .... I wouldn't know, Marino ... maybe Elway would be my guess, or even LT. It happened around mid 80's, didn't it?

The first player to sign a million dollar+ contract was Olympic gold medalist and the 1980 #2 draft pick Johnny Lam Jones. It was a multi year deal, not a million$ per season.

In 1984 Warren Moon's contract was for 5 years, $5.5 million plus a $4.5 million signing bonus. That made him the highest paid NFL player at the time. Not sure if he was the first to average a million dollars, but probably was.

Also found that O.J. Simpsons 1978 salary was $733,985. more than twice as much as the next highest paid player.

Stephen Davis signed the first $100 million dollar contract in Sept. 2000. It was for 9 years $90.75 million+ 45 million in incentives.

Does it have to be in the NFL? I know Steve Young signed with the Los Angeles Express of the USFL in 1983 for 10 years and 40 million dollars. They set it up were he'd receive 1 million a year for 40 years.

Not sure if he was the first, but at the time I think they said that was the largest contract in history.

We have some good guess's....BUT, nothing really for sure.I can't believe a milestone such as this is virtually unknown. Someone has to know for sure who the first was. Any football fan knows Namath signed for around $425,000 in '65. But not the first million dollar player! Amazing............ Bob
