Just had a great night out at the local Phillies AAA affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
We had such a great time I wanted to come in here and mention it and see who else loves the minors and where you go.
A few years ago we used to make the trip out to Reading at least once a year to see the Reading Phillies. But after a few years of construction the IronPigs opened up their brand new ballpark last year. They hosted their big brothers, the Phillies, in the first game at the new stadium and we were there. Was alot of fun to see the Phils without having to make the 2 hour trek to Philly.
This year, I bought some tix in the first row behind the dugout from a season ticket holder who sells some off before the season starts. There was 8 of us including my 3 year old son, and his friends who were 3 and 4. We sat and watched the game for a while before the kids started to get ancy and then went over to the playground for a while. When the kids were wearing down we went up to the club level for ice cream.
When we came back down my son literally walked into one of their 2 mascots who he loves coming out of the other elevator and ended up heading back towards the dugout together so he got to dance on top of it with her between innings. The game ended with the IronPigs hitting a walkoff double to score a guy from 2nd to break the tie in the bottom of the ninth. We were watching the guys celebrate on the field when one of the players from the other team popped his head over the dugout roof and asked my son if he wanted his batting gloves. Even after a tough loss the players are thinking about the fans... of the other team!
Here are some pics from the game last night.
I love the Phillies but its just alot easier and alot more fun for the kids to head over to the local minor league team.
Who else regularly goes to minor league games?
Where do you go and how does it compare to your local big league team?
