MLB Rule Question (1 Viewer)

I was under the impression that a pitcher or batter could be changed mid at bat. So a pitcher looks terrible with the first two pitches you can replace him, I know it just happened in the WBC but not sure about MLB.

My colleagues think I am incorrect. Tried looking for the rules on this but couldn't find anything the addressed it. Any else know the rule on this.

Not unless the pitcher is injured.

This is what clowns sit around and talk about?

a batter can be replaced at any time. a pitcher may only be replaced mid-at-bat for injury.
I disagree.A pitcher has to pitch to the first batter he faces (unless injured) until the batter is out or reaches base or the inning ends. After that, the pitcher can be replaced any time.

3.03 A player, or players, may be substituted during a game at any time the ball is dead.

3.05

(a) The pitcher named in the batting order handed the umpire-in-chief, as provided in Rules 4.01 (a) and 4.01 (b), shall pitch to the first batter or any substitute batter until such batter is put out or reaches first base, unless the pitcher sustains injury or illness which, in the judgment of the umpire-in-chief, incapacitates him from pitching.

(b) If the pitcher is replaced, the substitute pitcher shall pitch to the batter then at bat, or any substitute batter, until such batter is put out or reaches first base, or until the offensive team is put out, unless the substitute pitcher sustains injury or illness which, in the umpire-in-chief’s judgment, incapacitates him for further play as a pitcher.

You guys are wrong here. Pitchers can be replaced mid at-bat unless they were just brought in to face that batter.

:D I've seen it happen a few times.

Hypothetical:LH batter at the plateRH pitcher pitches 1 ball...no injury LH pitcher called to come inDoes the LH pitcher now have to stay for the entire at bat now that he has been brought in from the bullpen (barring injury of course) or can the manager bring a new pitcher in during this same at bat?

Has to stay in for the entire at bat barring injury. Pitchers must complete the at bat of the first batter they're brought in to face unless injured.

interesting. i had always thought it applied to every batter, not just the first. i stand corrected and thanks for pointing this out.

This is correct....a batter cannot be forced to face more than two pitchers in any given at bat unless the second pitcher gets injured. Even if the first pitcher is injured, only one sub can be given for the batter.

The only reason they added it to the first was to prevent an almost endless loop of pitching change....pinch hitter.....pitching change......pinch hitter.....pitching change....... without a pitch ever being throw.

that sounds like Tony LaRussa's wet dream.

Pitching changes can only be made between games, unless a game goes into extra innings, in which case a set-up man, also known as a "closer," is allowed to relieve the starting pitcher until the starting pitcher has rested his arm sufficiently and feels ready to reenter the game. In the event the game ends while the closer is pitching, the starting pitcher must pitch the next game.

I'm pretty sure I've seen guys pulled mid-count with no injury.
I'm pretty sure you haven't.
No, really, I'm pretty sure I have.
I'm going to keep bumping until Shake Zula admits he was wrong! Come on you coward - man up!!
:blackdot: I REFUSE!

I'm going to need proof of this abomination.
So when do we start the "Fictitious Baseball Rules" thread? We can start with "a pitcher cannot be substituted for mid-count", then add in "the batter can't switch from one side of the plate to the other if he has two strikes".

David Purcey just got pulled mid batter, the catcher got hurt so I don't know if that makes a difference since the pitcher wasn't hurt
