Mohamed Sanu gets pranked into thinking he'd been drafted (1 Viewer)

From Peter King's column today...

10. I think I'll get to a lot more of this in Monday's column, but I'd like to throw some empathy Mohamed Sanu's way. The Rutgers wide receiver was on the edge of his seat late in the first round, with the Bengals on the clock at No. 27, when his phone rang. The voice on the other end of the phone identified himself as being from the Bengals, and said Cincinnati was about to pick him. Sanu and those in his draft party exploded in excitement, and agent Mike McCartney even tweeted that Sanu was a Bengal. Then Cincinnati pick Zeitler."This is a great kid, I guarantee you, and someone played a cruel joke on him,'' McCartney told me. "It is unreal that someone would do that, but it happened.'' Sanu told McCartney after the draft not to worry about him, he'd be fine, and some team will draft him and get a good player. McCartney's right. Sanu must be a good kid, to respond to something that hurtful with an attitude so hopeful.
Some people in this world are so pathetic.

If it's one of his boys, that's an awesome prank.

If it's someone he doesn't know, just terrible.

ETA: if one of his boys, he needed to reveal himself at the end of the call for proper form

Yea, that's not an awesome prank. On possibly the biggest day of his life getting crushed like that is not funny. Very lame for anyone and I would likely not be friends with someone that thought that was funny.

Too bad it wasn't a couple years ago...then maybe the networks would have stopped showing them on the phone all the time earlier...

Why is the 8th/9th best WR prospect holding a huddle-around-the-TV day 1 draft party anyway? It's not as if his name was due to be called soon. This kid will be fine. It would be much crueler to prank him today or tomorrow.

I'm a Rutgers guy. Love Sanu, think he'll be a great pro. He's an awesome kid and will be fine.

My problem is with the agent. He sends out a tweet saying "Bengals take Sanu!" or something like that. Now, I have no clue if his agent is a powerful guy that has tens of thousands of followers or not where that tweet would have some relevance to the world...but isn't the very simple response to that mistake, publicly, to just say “Sorry I messed up, heard from a source that he was getting picked and I jumped the gun” instead of completely embarrassing Sanu even more with this story, which is being discussed all over the internet now?

Id fire him in a second if I'm Sanu.

I like how the recently added topics box currently says "Mohamed Sanu gets pranked into thinking he'd been drafted by wadegarrett". If you can't trust Sam Elliot, who can you trust?

That is jacked up.

I saw the Tweet actually and was so confused. I figured I must have mis-read the team and he was going off the board in another few minutes of the telecast, but it never happened.

This is hilarious, great prank.

The phone call thing before the pick is so stupid anyway, this just makes a mockery of it.

It would have been hilarious for one of the college kids to do this to ESPN or NFLN in the past, just to play with them...

wadegarrett would never draft Sanu. He's not his type of receiver.
He'd never draft anyone. He's finally sleeping.

Now I figured out why the Bengals have gotten better at drafting - they sent Mike Brown out of the room with a cell-phone to call Sanu while they were actually making the real pick ;)

*69 down?

ETA: And that is not an invitation, NTTIAWWT.

That's probably why it was done. Someone thought, "Why is this guy having a draft party on Day 1? This calls for some pranking."

AJ Jenkins' name wasn't "due" to be called either

Thank you ... I thought it was hilarious too but the immediate response on this board was making me feel guilty. I no longer feel guilty and am firmly back in my "people need to lighten up and be able to laugh at themselves" mindset.Echo the sentiments that the agent looks like the biggest tool in this story for rushing to tweet and be the newsbreaker. That makes this an awesome prank with added benefit.

Pre-combine he was expected to be a late 1st, early 2nd rounder. He slipped a bit after and is being projected more mid to late 2nd. It's not like he's expected to go in the 6th.

An added bonus to the already existing bonus in the prank would be if a team did call him tonight and he hung up on 'em because he thought he was being punk'd again.

This poor dude has to be an emotional wreck at this point.

I don't get how relaying a story about someone being a heartless **** to Sanu is completely embarrassing and a fireable offense?

There are people in this thread laughing at him. The fact that someone thought they could prank him into thinking he was going to be a 1st rounder is an inherent shot at his ability and draft prospects. Would someone try to prank David DeCastro into thinking he was a 1st round pick?An agent's job is to protect his client. By tweeting that, he opened him up to more ridicule than what he was already experiencing.

I disagree. If anything, he's made Sanu into a person that people are now routing for. Sanu taking it like a champ and just brushing it off (at least publicly) paints him as a guy that people want to see succeed. It probably wont affect the bottom line too much, but it shows good character and many sell a few more jersies when he gets to his new home.I guarantee more people know who Sanu is today than yesterday. If anything, the agent just did his job.

I think we're missing one key point here. The guy thought he was going to play for the BENGALS... if anything he's probably relieved it was a joke :)

7yrs Uni and get your Masters degree.

You apply to the job of a LIFETIME.

Get called for an interview.

Do well.

Get a call a week later that they'd like to hire you for the position.

Hang up the phone and hear people laughing in the background as they hang the phone up at the same time.

Nah... none of you would be pissed off at all, right?

A day or two later, get a call for the same job at a different organization for a lower rate of pay.

Yup.. kinda sucks balls to me.

I'm definitely going to root for him more now. What a ####ty thing to do to someone.

If he is then he's not meant for the NFL. I hope it fires him up to be an even better WR once he's drafted.

Yeah it would suck for him to go to a playoff team that is looking for a #2 Wide Receiver and get paid 1st round money as well. -QG

Waaaaaaaa. I have to wait another day to be a millionaire. Waaaaaaaaa.
Jimmy Smith (27th pick in 2011) got a $7.46 million contract that includes a $3.92 million signing bonus.Titus Young (44th pick in 2011) got a $4.56 million contract that includes a $1.81 million signing bonus.Even if he goes this pick, that's a loss of 3 million bucks.
