Mood in NY? (1 Viewer)

I don't live there anymore. When I did, when the Jets played the Giants it was pretty crazy. I'm imagining it sure doesn't seem like a week 5 game but more like a playoff game.

What's it like in NY, guys? Especially psyched for this week's game?

Nope. I don't think it's ever been THAT big of deal when they play. Nothing like Mets/Yanks. Most stories are about Jets' horrendous start and Giants' last 6 quarters. The game hasn't gotten a sniff on talk radio, and won't until Friday. It's all Yankees and mostly Mets talk.

As most Jets fans are also Mets fans, I think the Jets contingent are still in the early stages of grieving. Giants fans, by contrast, tend to be Yankees fans, and could not be flying higher at this moment. I predict the first half to be close, the Giants to pull ahead in the third, and Pennington to lead a 4th quarter comeback which ends in a pick-six for the G'nts [knocks on head].

Hadn't seen that, watched the game though. During this, not during the game, I noticed McNabb didn't take any (relatively)hard hits. Geesh the Giants were gentle with him, he's lucky.ETA that's pretty unbelievable. If ya got a few minutes watch that. I would never have said a QB won't be that banged up from 12 sacks, would you?

Yeah, right now it is all about the Mets blowing their playoff spot and the Yankees/Indians series starting tomorrow...

Especially with neither team lighting it up, this has been a quiet week for a Jets/Giants regular season tilt..

I noticed that myself. This is a kinder, gentler Giants pass rush. In the days of LT, Leonard Marshall, George Martin, etc., McNabb would have left Giants Stadium on a stretcher.

Those of us unfortunate enough to be Mets fans, but fortunate enough to be Giants fans are pretty psyched, but this is not a banner football year in NY. As a Giants fan, we fear a 6-10 or even worse, 7-9 season which sucks, has no real chance at the playoffs and yet no real chance at a top 5 pick in the draft.

That said, if we can pull this one out against the Jets, who have not looked good to date overall, things will be looking up.

Thank god for football and fantasy football. Go Tribe!

Agreed with everyone else above. You would seriously have NO CLUE the Jets-Giants were playing each other this weekend.

All talk everywhere is about the Mets collapse and the Yanks post-season rotation, Jabba rules, will ARod choke again, etc.

The only, and I mean SERIOUSLY, the only thing Jets' fans are talking about is replacing Chad Pennington with Kellen Clemens. 90+% of all Jets fans are bickering their brains out wondering why the hell Mangini is the only one not ready to pull the plug. Every Jets fan I know (including me) loves Chad and respects the hell out of him but simply does not want to see him as our starting QB anymore.

Giants fans are mostly quiet right now because they are mostly the Yankees fans and October baseball is all that is on their mind.

Mets fans who are most the Jets fans (since both teams used to play at Shea) just feel like someone is pissing in our Cheerios every morning for over 2 weeks now.

I'm a Jet / Yankee fan grieving anyway after the loss to Buffalo....How can this team hand off only 12 times, NOT use play action and not blitz a you QB....I think people are starting to question Mangini - Last year Schott Jr was the Whiz kid we were afraid to lose - Now I don't think we need to worry - Wonder if he has regrets not leaving.I stated in preseason that the Jets OL after last year was on it's way with 3/5th sewn up and they needed to ADD at least 1 more solid part.....So what to do? Add NOTHING and subtract 1. Both lines are pathetic - Hard to get Excited as a Jets fan for this game - You just hope Chad can Dink and dunk around that pass rush and somehow the jets dial in a blitz or 2.I'm sure Giant fans are a little more excited after last week. It's almost Clemens time....

I know (in passing) Schott Jr. through a mutual friend, and think the world of him as an offensive coordinator. Very good guy, too. He will be a head coach somewhere in the very near future.

It's Chad's fault that the team won't set up the pass properly by running the ball? By tiring out the D line? Even when they are the superior team by a good margin? When Clemens is "figured out" by defenses and throws some picks and doenst manage the team well how long till the cries for Chad begin?

They won't.Chad is a game manager and that is not what the 2007 NY Jets need from the QB position.

If we were the Bears, the Ravens, the Broncos, the Jaguars, etc, etc. And we had a young, fast, dominant defense and an offensive line that could win at the point of attack then I would never dream of wanting Clemens to get the start and I would laugh at anyone saying that Chad shouldn't.

However, we are amongst the least physical teams in the NFL. We have no running game due to having no push at the point of attack. We are weak in the defensive front 7 and can be run on at will and blown off line in the running game while generating no pressure, no sacks, and no turnovers in the passing game. This type of team listed here does not need a game manager if they are going to try and hang with the big boys of the NFL. This type of team described above needs a gun slinger who always gives them a puncher's chance in the later rounds.

Kellen showed us a flash of what he can do on the road vs. one of the best defenses known to man in his first NFL start. Chad belongs starting for a dominant team that needs a QB to just manage the game, put some points on the board but most importantly not screw anything up. Kellen is the type of QB that needs to lead a team like the 2007 NY Jets that actually needs their QB to be a playmaker in order to make things happen.

Different situations call for different solutions. Chad Pennington is not the solution for a team that is undersized in the trenches but blessed in the skill positions. A team like that needs a QB who can wing the ball around the field and take advantage of its strengths which is one of the NFL's best duo of WRs.

I fear for Pennington's life this week. If the Giant come after him like they did McNabb, it could be a long, long day...

yeah, um, two lousy teams go head to head in what will be a 0-0 tie well into next week..who cares..neither of these two teams is any good, frankly..I'm a giants fan, I know we always lose to the Jets.always. this time should be no different.but the real giants team is NOT what you saw sunday night, thats for sure..thats simply a matter of a familiarity with the def coordinator , b/c he coached in Philly previously.take the Jets, they'll cover.and, we're dealing with the lousy stinkin' knicks fiasco, the mets falling from the playoffs in the blink of an eye, its post season time for the Yanks, and the Devils are opening up a new stadium in , gulp, NEWARK.. :bag:yeah, a bloated 2-2 team vs a 1-3 team doesn't really excite anyone around here..we're headed for two NY football teams sub .500 records.lol

Set up the Pass???? Buffalo played a cover two and GAVE chad the underneath pass all day - Look at his stats....

Problem is when you have a QB with Chad's arm, The Two safeties don't have to cover THAT deep and worry about anything being thrown passed them.... Heck, as a DC I'd be like I SOOO DARE YOU to throw it OVER my defense - How many times has that ever happened. Then to add insult to injury, this defense that is crowding the box Also Jumps Chad's route cuz even the short passes Float.....

If Clemens comes in and fails miserably I think the cry will be to draft a strong armed QB.

I keep saying it but, the one thing I do love is that Clemens is learning behind one of if not the hardest working and best prepared QB's in the league - he just doesn't have the tools anymore.

If by "Yankees time" you mean bandwagon time where all the psuedo Yanks fans that claim they love the team (as has happened for a majority of time time during the past decade) put on their yanks caps, talk #### and pretend as if they are real fans?(btw, a bunch of those caps just replaced mets caps because there is certainly a large fairweather who is in the playoffs contingent here in NY. )

When it comes to the Yanks, I don't know of too many fairweather fans. Most people either hate them or love them. You won't find any Yank haters jumping on the bandwagon just because the Mets folded up like a cheap suit.....they're too busy screaming for Willie's head to be concerned with the Yanks. Besides, they're used to playing second fiddle around here.

You speak as if I dont know.I live in NY. You have your hard core yanks fans and your hard core mets fans. Yanks will always outnumber the Mets but not nearly by the margin some think - and a big reason why is that middle of the road bandwagon fans, of which there are PLENTY (TU for example. ) Remember, NY's roots is as a National League town moreso than the American League when you had three teams here. That has obviously changed over time, but the traditions have been handed down family by family.FWIW, I know plenty of people personally whom were Mets fans up until the mid '90s when the Mets hats got tossed... and suddenly re-appeared over the past couple of years. As far as second fiddle - losing or at least not winning will do that. Talk to me when the cycle changes and the Yanks have a 5+ year downturn (which will happen at some point, though not anytime in the near future if their young arms hold up) while the Mets become kings of the City. It's happened before, it will happen again. And the bandwagon will, as always, follow.

Obviously not set in stone (Jets/Yanks fan here), but generally people associate the Jets/Mets and the Giants/Yanks..Sort of that new team vs. old guard thing, combined with the fact the Jets used to play at Shea

Kellen showed us a flash of what he can do on the road vs. one of the best defenses known to man in his first NFL start.
The Ravens are 24th in yards per pass allowed and 25th in passing TDs allowed. They got lit up in consecutive weeks by Kurt Warner and Derek Anderson. This is not a good pass defense, much less one of the best defenses known to man.(Conversely, Pennington did show us what he could do vs. one of the best defenses known to man, by averaging eight yards per pass attempt and throwing 2 TDs and 0 INTs against the Patriots in the opener.)

The Giants beat the Jets the last time they played.I think they're easily a playoff team in the NFC.

I hate baseball so i'm really psyched about this game. even though I agree with the general sentiment neither one of these teams are anything special. The rest of my family are jets fans so i'm going to enjoy watching the giants take the snot out of them.

You're not being very fair with your analysis, because all that stuff is factored in when looking at Pennington's passing numbers. It's like saying,It's almost impossible to defend Pennington. You can't play zone coverage because he's so intelligent and knows exactly where to beat the zone. He audibles at the LOS and reads the defense so well that they're helpless to stop him. And you can't play man, because he's too accurate. His ability to put the ball into the smallest of boxes makes it impossible for a CB to cover the WR.

I'd say a disproportionate number of Jets fans are Mets, but still there are more Yankees/Jets fans than Mets/Jets fans. There are also more Giants/Yankees fans than Giants/Mets fans. There are lots more Yankees fans than Mets fans.

This was not the case in the late 80's. I wonder what possibly could have changed? (there will always be more Yanks fans than Mets fans, but not nearly to the degree people think because of the Yanks amazing run of success over the past 10 years)

BTW, the reason people are Jets/Mets fans is because of geography. Both played at Shea and the Jets train (at least for one more year) out on Long Island. This creates a natural association with the teams. The guys play (or played or train) here and many of them live out here. We have a number of Jets here in Glen Cove at a couple of the high end rental places, in fact.

The other reason you have Mets fans (other than growing up when they were good or picking them randomly or liking the underdog) is because of National League roots from families who were Giants or Dodger Fans. In Brooklyn especially this can not go unstated.

Disagree.... The OLD team are the Yankees The Giants and the Rangers....The newer teams with more Long Island Roots are the Islanders, the Jets and the Mets...

I've always been the rare Yankee / Jet fan.... Islanders

And I blame a lot of the problems the Jets have with lack of homefield advantage, fairweather fans and lack of a loud stadium that knows when to make NOISE, on the fact they we have too many P###Y Met fans.....

The Giants played smart football. Hurting McNabb would mean a better QB could come off the bench and try to either throw the ball or elude the rush. Just sack him nicely, help him up, and sack him again. That game almost looked like it was fixed. Don't you think the Eagles could have figured out at some point they need to help the left tackle w/ Osi? Just brutal.

We're not going to get anywhere with this, so I'm just going to say I think you're wrong.I know the "new" teams, the LI teams, are the Yanks/Jets/Mets/Nets. That doesn't mean fans follow them. Lots of Yankees fans were Yankees fans before the Mets existed, but lived on Long Island. When the Jets came, they started rooting for them, and since they had some pretty awesome early success, it stuck.

As for the Stadium, the Jets HFA is fine. The crowd has been incredible for all the playoff and playoff-like games they've had. There was no #####ing about ##### Mets fans when the Jets beat the Colts 41-0.

Jets and Devils fan and I might watch the Yankees in the playoffs if I have nothing better to do. Not a huge baseball fan but would probably root for them just because it might upset a few Pats fans in Boston :bye:I guess we're just lucky to have so many teams to choose from in this area and I think the old mets/jets .. yankees/giants affiliations have really been lost over the years. The stadium issue will be resolved with the new jets/giants stadium in 2010(?) by which time I hope we'll have two playoff caliber teams to play there.

I Agree with you saying we won't agree but, I don't follow your logic...If a Yankee fan was a Yankee fan Before the Mets came around, most likely they were ALSO Giant and Ranger fans... Hence, the reason NY is mostly like that...

I'd agree with you if you said it has changed over the years and as we move away from that old guard the lines become more blurred....

But, I've never heard that logic you just stated and all my life I've encountered mostly Yankee / Giant / Ranger fans and I was for the most part in the small minority of Jet / Yankee fans somewhat because my parents weren't into sports so, I was never handed down teams to root for like most....

Maybe you're a bit younger than me and you are seeing more of the blurred lines but, when I was in school it was pretty rock solid and when you would go to an Islander game you would see Met and Jets hats everywhere - rarely a Yankee or Giant hat - When you go to a Ranger or Giant game it's all NY Yankees.....

If this were a poll of New Yorkers, I'd be my house that the line would fall Yankee/Giants/Rangers - even though I admit this line could be getting blurred as the older generation moves on.

Oh, and compared to most teams, the Home field advantage at Giants stadium for Jet games BLOWS... It's not like the noise in Buffalo, Cincinatti, KC on and on - Great that they get pumped up for a playoff blow out but, in years like this when they are needed it's just not there and an embarrassment. - Part of it is the lot debacle and the other is the commute many have and need to leave early.
