Chris Mortensen on Jim Rome this morning: indicates that Blank has discussed releasing Vick and thinks Michael Vick has played his last game as a Falcon.

Did anyone hear Falcons DE Chuck Smith on ESPN last night ripping Vick and the Falcons organization? Funny Stuff :)

Mort was on ESPN radio and TV multiple times yesterday speculating this -- based on his instinct and related rumors.

Not based any official comment from Arthur Blank or Roger Goodell

Mort thinks this or Blank thinks this?
I'm taking a break from listening to Mort on this one. If he reports facts from interviews or from confirmed sources then I'll listen. But his opinion and thoughts based on rumors have been subpar for this whole event. I happen to believe him though on this.

FixedETA that this is a very real possibility....
lmao - hold your breath. If covering up murders didn't stop R Lewis, how does this stop Vick from playing again? Dreamer.

Sadly, Mort has been all over the map on the Vick story, parroting whatever the media thinks is going to happen instead of reporting the facts as they become clear and available ... all these talking heads should go back to reporting vs speculating ... now that camps are opening all over the NFL maybe we can get some NEWS instead of this regurgitation of a very sad sick story.

:football:

I can't see a justifiable reason why the Falcons would not take this chance to get out of Vick's contract. Vick has failed to be the player he has been paid to be but at least he brought excitement and fans to the stadium and now he's lost that so he's simply overpaid.

I hope his career is not done however. I think he's one of the more exciting players to watch in the game but if he's convicted the only team that I think would take a chance on him is the Raiders.

Does anyone know the detailed breakdown of his contract? I thought the Falcons were looking at a cap hit upwards of a $22 million by releasing him this year?

I absolutely agree. By cutting Vick the Falcons gain will a lot of respect as well as be able to cut their losses on a player whose value to the team will never be what he once was (selling jerseys made up for his any disappointment as a QB). The bottom line is that the Falcons cannot keep Vick on the team without taking a huge public opinion hit.I don't know if this has been posted yet, but Reebok has stopped selling Vick jerseys and Nike isn't releasing his new shoe.

I don't know the exact figures but I heard they would take a $6 million hit this year and $15 million next year.

Mort was on Mike & Mike two days ago saying the same stuff. I don't disagree with him, but I also get no sense that he's basing his opinion on anything but his own instincts.

The huge cap hit is based on acceleration of the unamortized signing bonus. If the Falcons are able to terminate the contract for breach, then the Falcons will go after repayment of a portion of the siging bonus and the huge cap hit will go away. The league bought some time for the lawyers to a craft solution which removes Vick from the NFl and gives the Falcons some relief.

I heard Mort on Mike and Mike right after the indictment adamantly stating that Vick would definitely play in 2007.

I know that, but his salary this season will offset some portion of that acceleration. I was wondering how much he was scheduled to make this season (And next, now) to see how much of an actual impact it was likely to have.

We are also in a league that has Mr. Goodell as the commish. He is not taking crap from anyone. If Vick gets convicted he could be banned from the game. These are federal charges that have minimum prison terms. This is not a joke. Jamal Lewis was convicted and served time in jail because he made a phone call about a drug deal but never showed up to make the deal. For some reason people look more kindly on drug dealing that killing dogs. The public outcry may force the Commish to set a serious example. It will be a PR nightmare if he doesn't and frankly, we have seen that the commish has no problem dropping the hammer...And if you recall the time line, I believe that the indictment shows he was personally involved in brutally killing animals that didn't show enough aggression just a couple of days before walking into Goodell's office and telling the commish to his face that he had nothing to do with any of this.....Roger will remember that...

Not to mention that the Maricopa County sheriff has now stated that Vick is a person of interest in Arizona dog fighting cases and thus we may see more charges in the future....

I'm not so sure that that's how that works. They can get the actual MONEY back, but I'm not certain that they can get the cap space back.

Vick faces two big problems (aside from the moral outrage, which I think will blow over).1) Federal charges are tough to beat, and sentencing can be harsh. If he is tried and convicted, he could have a multi-year term which would be the end of his career. Assuming he isn't actually innocent, I have to think his lawyers will find a way to get a small sentence (a la Jamal Lewis) in return for testimony and/or lots of meaningful community service.

2) The NFL is likely to have extremely strict rules against gambling and/or interaction with organized crime. It appears that Vick has definitely been involved with 'sports' gambling, and I assume that organized crime is involved with dogfighting. This might give the NFL very broad leeway to punish him severely, and Goodell might just do that, up to and including a lifetime ban.

Do you actually think it is exciting to watch a QB over throw an open WR or run for his life because he is not capable of reading defenses? This guy is the most over hyped over paid QB in the history of the NFL.

Hard to see how they can pick up unamortized signing bonus - if the signing bonus has been revised to 0.In some format, Falcons will get cap relief by the amount of signing bonus recovered.

99.9% of people get upset when they hear about animals being tortured. People hear about murders every day and don't think twice about it. We will be hearing about the Vick situation non-stop until and after the trial is over. Like it or not, Vick's situation attracts more media coverage and enrages people more than Lewis' situation did.The Falcons can't keep Vick on their team. The guy is hated by most of the American public. He's a Falcon because he draws in fans and makes money for the team. Now, he will have the opposite impact. I'm willing to bet you don't see too many poeple wearing Vick Jerseys in the Atlanta area anymore.

umm I bet there will plenty of fans still sporting Vick jerseys

My opinion aside there is a reason his jersey sales were #2 and he was on the cover of Madden and he was the face of the Falcons. As for my opinion sure he's not accurate which is why he's not a great QB but that does not detract from the face he's got a rocket arm, ran for over 1,000 yards and generally opens up running lanes for the team since defenses have to account for him. If you don't think Vick was exciting that's your opinion but just know it's in the minority.

I'd think that there has to be some type of clause in his and any NFL contract that would be a loophole for teams not to take a salary cap hit with the huge signing bonus Vick has in his deal.

Perhaps it's time for Vick to change his name to Ron Mexico or......

How unstoppable will Vick be in the CFL with the huge field?!?!?! :goodposting:

If Little Dougie could win six Most Outstanding Player awards in the CFL, Vick will win 20 of them.

Hell, they'll give him three of them per year.

Do you think that the NFL would grant relief of the cap hit to the Falcons if Vick is banned from the league?

I wonder what the new personal conduct policy allows? The conduct policy seems to allow teams to drop players who have are facing suspensions from the league, whereas previously this wasn't allowed.

It was mentioned in this article about Jarrod Cooper.

Does Atlanta still host Freaknik?Remember the "Free Mike Tyson" tee-shirts? This after the former champ was sent to prison. . . for RAPE.

Yes. There are provisions in the CBA that teams can get relief for players under league suspension. However, if they voluntarily release a player not under suspension the same guidelines would apply as if he were any other player which is why the Falcons are hoping the league will do something to him.I am not sure what the rules say for a player under team suspension, but if I were to guess if the team imposed it they may have to eat the cap hit but I am not sure and that's speculative on my part. I also do not believe that the team can suspend a player for more than 4 games at a time, so the banning element likely would not apply.

Might even watch the CFL if that happens.

Don't know if it's in the minority or not I think it's closer to 50-50 on Michael Vick either you love him or hate him. Personaly I didn't like him never have. It does not matter if a guy has a rocket for an arm if his accuracy isn't there he will not last long. Exciting I would not call him. Exciting is watching a real QB like Peyton Manning hit a open reciever or better yet a receiver who is barely open yet gets him the ball and bam a sweet passing TD. That is what a QB should be able to do not run all the time that is what the RB is for.

I don't know the exact figures but I heard they would take a $6 million hit this year and $15 million next year.
What I heard yesterday on ESPN (I think it was Clayton) was that there would be no hit this year, and a $7.5 mil hit next year. According to him, the Falcons considered this trivial and it wouldn't even factor into their decision.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution has been reporting $6M and change and $15M and change over two seasons for the cap hit.I don't know where ESPN is getting their numbers. Beofre the start of the 2005 season, Vick signed a contract that included $37 million in signing bonuses. Apparently $15 million of the bonus money has been accounted for and the rest could be allocated this year and next.

Mortensen should stick to what he knows, which is who's playing and who's not on Sundays based on his NFL contacts. He's no good at the rumor and guessing game.

Vick has played his last game in the NFL - Once they stop selling you merchandise you no longer exsist. Has to be tough being a Falcon fan.

Vick will never play in the NFL again. He has become a PR nightmare. No team in their right mind, not even the Raiders with Al Davis, would risk the public scrutiny and protests from PETA, or any of the 24 million dog owners in the US, if they sign this guy.he's finished as an NFL player.

:headbang: I am a dog owner and dog lover, but I don't get the huge uproar with Vick's situation compared to Ray Lewis murder or all the wife beaters in the league. Jamal Lewis is a convicted coke dealer, but still is in the league and only got a 4 game suspension. Leonard Little killed someone while driving drunk and he is still in the league. Kobe Bryant is a rapist, even if he wasn't convicted. Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist and he still went on to make millions in his fights. As a society do we value a dog's life more than human life? I get how horrible of a crime Vick is accused of, but I think it pales in comparison to some other crimes committed by professional athletes.

:( Exactly , if Vick was nt involved the Feds would not give a $h1T about dog fighting but it s Vick and he is black ( I wonder what would happen if it was Peyton Manning was involved , probably nothing ) .

Dog fighting is nothing compare to what those guys did and they are still playing in the NFL .
