Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025 Discussion Thread (1 Viewer)

The official Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2025 is:
Jared Allen
Sterling Sharpe
Eric Allen
Antonio Gates

No Suggs, Holt, or Manning is a surprise to me. Especially Suggs

Agree with the picks though
Suggs and Holt should be in. Eli's a bit of a surprise, as I thought he was a lock (maybe younger voters now?).

I'm glad Sterling Sharpe finally made it, though. That dude was a beast
I think Sharpe would have been in sooner if he wasn't forced to retire
Yeah. He was flat out awesome. Deserved to be in for sure.

Jared Allen - he was a disruptor. As a Lions fan, he was hated and the cause of much concern.
Sterling Sharpe - dominant, but shortened career. As a Lions fan, more feared than hated. He was just so dang good!
Eric Allen - no opinion and had to actually look him up. Guess I would have voted elsewhere, if I had a vote. Underwhelming.
Antonio Gates - Him and Gonzalez redefined the TE position.

Interesting they still skipped over some known/respected names and only picked 4. As always, plenty of great (and some only really good) players left out.

No issue with 3 of those guys. Eric Allen is kinda wild. Feels kinda like putting Darius Slay in the HOF.

Sharpe should have never taken this long. From 88-94, only Jerry Rice was a better WR. If Sharpe hadn't had his career ending neck injury (while in his prime) there's an argument he's got top-5 career numbers, especially as he got hurt right as Favre got going.

Allen and Gates were no-brainers and were the best players at their positions that weren't in. Was a little surprising Allen had to wait this long.

I have no problem with any of those guys not making it.

Kevin Williams is the one that really gets me. As much as I like Jared Allen, Kevin Williams was better in my opinion.

I just don't see it with Jared Allen.

He was great and fun to have in the Vikings. But this does nothing to sway me from my position that it's now just The Hall of the Very Good.

I didn't think Sterling would ever really get in, but happy for him. I love to watch the HoF reveal videos that they've done in recent years and it is special to see his brother do it.

Also first South Carolina Gamecock in the hall, cool stuff.

Eric Allen's career comp is closer to Darrell Green than Darius Slay. Allen had 54 INTS and 8 pick 6s. Slay has 24 INTs and 3 pick 6s. They're not even in the same stratosphere.

I've never felt pick 6s are a skill. Those are just random fluky things to me. I mean, of Allen's 8, 7 came in 2 seasons, one of those seasons was when his career was almost over. Was he better those seasons? I don't think so. I don't totally love INTs either as a super important stat. I mean, Revis is in my top-5 CBs in history, and he didn't even have 30 INTs.

Revis only played what amounted to 9 seasons. I would expect his cumulative numbers to be lower. Had Revis played another 5 seasons he would have been closer to 50 than 30.

Regarding Eric Allen, I find his inclusion to be really surprising.

I have posted in this forum in the past about reasons the PFR Approximate Value and HOF Monitor (which leverages AV) metrics are flawed... but they are still decent proxies to use as a component of a HOF argument. Per PFR HOF Monitor:
  • The average modern era HOFer score is 100
  • Among DBs whose careers started in 1955 or later and played at least 50 career games:
    • Allen's score is 58.95, which ranks 58th
    • There are 36 HOF DBs; their average score is 97; excluding Allen, the average score for the other 35 is 98.1
    • Allen's score ranks higher than only 3 other HOF DBs, all of whom were senior nominees: Ken Riley, Emmitt Thomas, and **** Lebeau
Beyond that, while he was obviously a great player, he had 1 AP1, 2 AP2, and 6 Pro Bowl selections. The average HOF DB has 3 AP1 and 7 Pro Bowl selections in 13 seasons. (I realize Pro Bowl selections are also flawed, but it is theoretically in recognition of strong performance).

I don't think Allen is the worst possible selection by any means, but there are at least 2 other DBs (Earl Thomas, Darren Woodson) who are eligible and more deserving IMO. And at other positions, IMO Holt and Kuechly are more deserving just off the top of my head.
