On another note, when I used to see these "take 1" buckets in front of houses, they were always empty, and I always assumed that they were put out there empty by cheapskates.

I put one out a few yrs ago in a nice stainless steel mixing bowl, then took my kids trick or treating. Came back and all the candy was gone, and so was the bowl.

Knew an old farmer that did this with a roadside vegetable stand. Said it was very rare to get ripped off and in fact people tended to over pay just a bit since there was no one to make change.
