if you'd seen my late wife crippled with giggling to my burlesques of International Lover, that would surely make your listSo top 10 Prince songs seems apprapo tonight
I probably posted this in a previous yacht rock thread, but can’t not think of this scene when I hear this song.AndrewClark said:
I don't think there's a true yacht rock definition, so that works fine IMO. Besides, if "Sailing" doesn't fit yacht rock, I'm not sure what does. Also, doesn't Christopher Cross need to be mentioned here somewhere? Or is that over the line into straight up EZ Listening, and where is that line exactly?
Pip will probably chastise me for this, but as I believe I mentioned in his Neil thread, I like Nicolette's cover better than Neil's original.Lotta Love - Nicolette Larson
Cross is pretty much yacht rock through and through -- though it's important to remember that "yacht rock" is retrospective label coined in recent years. People weren't calling it that when the music was contemporary. Also, doesn't Christopher Cross need to be mentioned here somewhere? Or is that over the line into straight up EZ Listening, and where is that line exactly?

These were my initial thoughts upon opening up this thread.I don't think there's a true yacht rock definition, so that works fine IMO. Besides, if "Sailing" doesn't fit yacht rock, I'm not sure what does.
Unfortunately, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to rap. This is spot on commentary. I hope you guys will be here when I cover Tupac as well. Shoot I might even get on my piano and cover some of my favorite Bruce Hornsby songs. This is amazing
Since yacht rock isn't a term that existed when yacht rock was being made, there isn't a brightly defined line. Back then, some of what is now called yacht rock was called soft rock, some of it was called adult contemporary, some of it was called AOR, etc. For some people, it was just the stuff in the top 40 that wasn't disco. Also, doesn't Christopher Cross need to be mentioned here somewhere? Neil's version was #79 in my countdown of Neil songs. I know people who only were aware of Larson's version and had no idea Neil wrote this and did his own version. It's not Led Zeppelin, or even Neil Young, but no yacht rock conversation would be complete without
Lotta Love - Nicolette Larson
I mean, this one has a flute solo and everything.
"Start with 'Sailing' and work back from there" is as good a method as any when labeling yacht rock.I don't think there's a true yacht rock definition, so that works fine IMO. Besides, if "Sailing" doesn't fit yacht rock, I'm not sure what does.
You are not alone (although not with me) on this.Pip will probably chastise me for this, but as I believe I mentioned in his Neil thread, I like Nicolette's cover better than Neil's original.
I had no idea until recently that Cross even played guitar. The advent of MTV killed his career because he wasn't conventionally attractive, so I had only known of him through the radio.EDIT: Damn -- never really thought of Christopher Cross as a shredder, but he could bring it live.
I concur 100 percent but Nicolette Larson is yacht rock and her cover of this is the best version.... PeriodPip will probably chastise me for this, but as I believe I mentioned in his Neil thread, I like Nicolette's cover better than Neil's original.
Can we take a 30 seconds to appreciate the back up singers on I Just Wanna Stop by Gino Vanelli? As a guitarist and pianist and singer I have always been the back up guy, but I just wanted to point out the way they can pull off a chord on the vocalsAndrewClark said:Top 10 Yacht Rock Songs: Before the summer really ends...

I mentioned in Tim's 1975 thread that, after binging on '70s Hall and Oates, I came to the conclusion that this song is an attempted fusion of "Sara Smile" and "She's Gone."AndrewClark said:
9 or 10Somehow I've never even heard the term Yacht Rock before, so I'm just trying to get a feel for what it really is. On a scale of 1 (this isn't YR) to 10 (this is the epitome of YR), where would Dr. Hook--"When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" rank?
Considered this song last night -- by your scale, it's a strong 9. Maybe a little lean toward disco in the rhythm section, but it's all good. Solid tune.Somehow I've never even heard the term Yacht Rock before, so I'm just trying to get a feel for what it really is. Zero gatekeeping here. And lovely deserve a spot. I started this thread so we could discuss music not for my objectivity. Please continue to participateSince there's no gatekeeping, I would like to include "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers. If I own the yacht, that's on the playlist.
I saw Chicago in concert with the Beach Boys at the Hollywood Bowl. One of the few concerts I have ever been too. It was in 88 or 89 or 90. I don't remember anything about it other than I was there.Pip's Invitation said:The entire Tanglewood 1970 show is amazing -- the whole thing is on Youtube in one big file and it's a must-hear for anyone who likes Chicago. You can also tell what a big deal they were at the time. At the end, the crowd refuses to leave and the promoters bring Terry Kath back out to tell them they have to.
I saw them in 1995 on a bill with Crosby, Stills and Nash. The set was mostly old-school stuff, very heavy on the first two albums, which was great for me.I saw Chicago in concert with the Beach Boys at the Hollywood Bowl. One of the most amusing parts of El Camino (the Breaking Bad movie) was finding out that Todd liked the yachtiest of yacht rock, including this song.6. I'd Really Love to See You Tonight by England Dan and John Ford Coley
The $64,000 question: Does Taking It to the Streets qualify as yacht rock?Time to open up the Michael McDonald (solo or doobies) wing of the yacht rock museum:
I Keep Forgetting
Real Love
Minute By Minute
Sweet Freedom
You Belong To Me

I'm not talking 'bout moving inOne of the most amusing parts of El Camino (the Breaking Bad movie) was finding out that Todd liked the yachtiest of yacht rock, including this song.
Fun fact: England Dan (real name: Dan Seals) is the brother of Jim Seals of Seals and Crofts.
What's really amazing here is that Jay Ferguson came from Spirit, which made incredibly textured psychedelic rock. Thunder Island is orders of magnitude different from that.I think you can get a better appreciation of the yacht rockiness of it when you see the artist or album. Yacht rock was a look.
Thunder Island
Made his money, bought into a fancy home in Benedict Canyon, went from LSD to coke and straightened up his sound. That's the path of the time. What's really amazing here is that Jay Ferguson came from Spirit, which made incredibly textured psychedelic rock. That explains a lot about why yacht rock emerged when it did.went from LSD to coke
Yeah, I have never tested it in the slightest but I am pretty sure if you trace the popular drugs of an era with the popular music of the day, they move together. That explains a lot about why yacht rock emerged when it did.
Yep. Another obvious inextricable association is heroin and grunge.Yeah, I have never tested it in the slightest but I am pretty sure if you trace the popular drugs of an era with the popular music of the day, they move together.

That’s two ex-Spirit band members named in the same thread on the same day. Make it three with bass player Mark Andes, who played in the aforementioned Firefall. What's really amazing here is that Jay Ferguson came from Spirit, which made incredibly textured psychedelic rock. Mark Andes went from Spirit in the '60s to Firefall in the '70s to Heart (the power ballad incarnation) in the '80s. He was a true trendhopper. That’s two ex-Spirit band members named in the same thread on the same day. Make it three with Mark Andes, who played in the aforementioned Firefall.
Yes, the big hair Heart days. His first album with them (Passionworks) has one of my favorite songs from their extensive collection: How Can I Refuse.Mark Andes went from Spirit in the '60s to Firefall in the '70s to Heart (the power ballad incarnation) in the '80s. He was a true trendhopper.
