My 13 yo pug recently went deaf (1 Viewer)

My pug went deaf from old age , so the vet says, and now all she does is bark. She cant hear anything so im wondering what it is shes barking at. She never barked randomly before she went deaf. She will sometimes stand facing a wall and bark...its a slow bark...like woof....woof ...woof woof....woof (i know that looks silly) . It`s not an urgent bark or a warning bark. I almost feel like she may be going crazy in her now completely silent world. Anyone else ever deal with this issue with a a pet ?

old dog new tricks?

Sorry to hear that. That is a pretty good life for a pug. I had one - Doug the Pug. Registered name: Douglas J. Needsomecash.

He lived to 16 ...should have put him down a little earlier, he went blind and his hips bugged him. My father-in-law was kind enough to finally take him to the vet to put him to his final sleep. I couldn't do it.

Talk to the vet. See what options you have.

Love the pugs.

I am on a mobile device. When I taught my dog certain thing I used both at the same time just hoped you did the same.

That sucks. Same thing with my 12 year old pug, vet said it was symptoms of a brain tumor (the barking is probably from pain). He made it a few more months, I don't know, if you're still able to connect with him cherish it while it lasts, that deafness and random loud barking was the beginning of a way too quick complete loss of all awareness.

Sorry to hear that BK.

Talk to the vet about it ASAP. If it is related to just losing his hearing, there may be some. Anti anxiety medication to help ease him a bit.

Best of luck and I hope it's not as tentimes described.

Yes. My wife would get these pain killers for dogs from Costco, we called them miracle pills, I'll find out the exact name later tonight.

My dog went deaf last year, but he can still hear high pitched noises and clapping among other things. Sometimes he hears something and barks, doctor said he could have ringing reverberation which is like tinnitus. He doesn't obsessively bark but I'm pretty sure he can hear himself, so maybe that is comforting to him. He really doesn't seem to care except that he misses stuff now, and he's one that always likes to be in the mix.

rorer 714?
Wife just got home and reminded me my memory sucks. The miracle pill I was thinking of was something we used when his mobility started to go, had him playing like a puppy again.

im gonna give this stuff a shot....thank you so much !!!

My pug Bernie just turned 12. He has pigmentary keratitus but his vision is hanging in there. Otherwise healthy as can be and still very active.

She'll get used to the deafness. Happened to my buddy's pug and one day she just stopped barking. Good luck!
