My Email to the NFL (1 Viewer)

Dear Commissioner Goodell,

I am shocked by your leniency towards that Head Coach in New England.

You suspended a coach from Dallas who used drugs for his health problems five games. However, that coach in New England’s actions could have changed many games outcomes with his blatant disregard for the rules. How can I tell my child “do not cheat” when all it cost you is some pocket change. $500,000 is nothing to that coach. No one person was ever bigger than the game until today. That coach in New England has made millions of dollars off of us fans hard hard earned money. It is possible that it was all because he was a cheater and not a genius.

That coach and his family will continue to live a comfortable life even with that fine. I however have to scrimp and save to pay for the NFL Sunday ticket. Well I now feel like a sucker and I will be canceling my NFL Sunday Ticket subscription. (and perhaps Directv)

He should have received a one year suspension for bringing disgrace to the NFL. You should be ashamed of yourself for not suspending him.

Dude, get over it. All teams do it. Just because the Patriots are not your favorite team doesnt mean you should send garbage like this.

Dear John,I could give a rat's behind if you cancel DirecTV.

I personally think a 1/2 million fine IS significant. Sorry, I couldn't make his family miserable or maybe punch him out in front of said family, but, as commissioner, I have to draw the line somewhere. I also think the loss of a draft pick is significant. Sorry that your definition of leniency and mine are so far apart but that's why I am the commish and you are, well, scraping up change for Sunday Ticket.

$500,000 is pocket change? John, feel free to survey professional sports and give me some examples of fines that large. Heck, MLB gives a pitcher a couple days suspension for throwing a baseball at someones head. Umm, you know pitchers don't work every day, right?

Well John, it's been fun talking to you but I suspect nothing short of castration would satisfy you.

Signed,

Commissioner Goodell

too bad you didn't read about Wade Wilson before ya wrote that
Wilson took the drugs to help his diabetes. He got 5 games for that. Well in my mind he was just trying to improve his quality of life. That other coach in N.E. was just trying to improve the quality of his image.
Somebody please explain the Wade Wilson incident to me like I'm four. Does him taking whatever he was taking help him coach better? Why was he suspended?
All NFL employees have the same code of conduct provisions in their contract, so coaches have to adhere to the same drug policy. The CBA spells out the rule, and those caught with banned substances will get hit with a 4 game suspension. The policy also holds coaches to a higher standard so an extra game was added.Wilson claims that he took HGH to help his diabetes, although some medical people feel that HGH is the last thing you would take if you had diabetes and that that would worsen his condition. I have no idea either way on the medical front. So what he was using it for is a bit up in the air (at least to some people).
I, for one, was not fooled at all by the claim that the HGH was for his diabetes. I've heard no mention in any of the Wade Wilson comments in this thread of the most telling part of that story: HE HAD THE HGH SENT DIRECTLY TO HALLAS HALL!!! Not his home, mind you, but directly to Bears headquarters, his place of business. I don't know about you, but if it were me, I don't think I'd be sending banned substances to my work if it were for a personal medical condition. There was a specific purpose for having it sent there, and it sure wasn't anything Wilford Brimley would condone. (CODE = PLAYERS)By the way, FDNY, I didn't forward that letter on to 5 people I know. Is that bad? Will something terrible happen to me in the next 7 days or something? The last time I forwarded one of these, I got burned. -- I'm talking to you, Bill Gates. I forwarded your little email beta test, and I'm still waiting for my share of your fortune. I'm never using Microsoft products again. -- Fool me once...

Not sure it's on the same level since I don't recall another team being stripped of draft picks, but is this any different from when an NCAA coach cheats (i.e. gives $$$ to a recruit) and the team suffers (a la SMU, 1987, Alabama 2002)?

I guess I am just a square who believes in honor and integrity. What that coach did was wrong. To let him coach again this soon is sending the wrong message to other teams.
So should the San Diego Chargers have cut Shawn Merrimen after he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and tarnished the honor and integrity of the game?
My god how many times must I say this. the coach should not have been fined, he should have been suspended like all the players have been in the past for cheating including Shawn Merrimen. If Merrimen fails another test he should get the Ricky Williams Treatment. The patriots as a team should have been fined. Draft Picks hurt the team too much. I think the Pats and their fans are getting screwed. The coach is the one who should get the punishment. Suspending him is a real punishment. A fine is a joke.

what good would suspending a coach do? As I understand it, they can't Go to practises or games, but nothing says they can't be in contact by phone. Or under the circumstances, by video. IF it ment zero team contact, then thats a punishment. The simple fact is that its against the rules and it was stressed in the offseason, yet the organization continued to do it. After all, someone was paying these people to video tape and get the signals to the coach. No way was this just a coaches decision. Broke the rules, not pay the price.

My favorite punishment would be to glue a texas shirt to bb and send him to Oklahoma for a week.

I guess my problem is I thought the commissioner was doing a great job cleaning up the image of the NFL by suspending thugs and drug abusers and cheaters (Steroids). However, like in real life if you are in upper management the same rules to not apply. If you feel the same, express it.NFL280 Park Ave., 15th Fl.New York, NY 10017 Phone: 212-450-2000Fax: 212-681-7599
Since I emailed him earlier this year advocating leniency for Vick, Pacman and Ricky, an email from me urging a harsher punishment for Belichick will only confuse him.And please, for god's sake, tell me you didn't use the "Do it for the children" argument in this thread.

I’m sorry unlike you I have a limited time window to teach my chld right from wrong. Probation and a fine is why our society is slipping. I pray to god that he gives me enough time to pass my feelings of honor and integrity on to my child.

Ah...$500k is alot no matter who the hell you are. What would be the appropriate fine then? 2 billion dollars? :lmao: And, do you honestly think the commish cares if you have NFL ticket or not?

I really have not liked any of the things he has done..There should be a more clear cut line... like before first suspension was 4 games then 8 then a season. Then it was 4 games then a season. Heck now its just a season....or more..

What BB did hurts the NFL more than what Vick did IMO...

The NFL has a great product. It can handle way more disgrace than Chancellor Goodell or the moralists think it can. Frankly, disgrace in and of itself is pretty entertaining.

Video taping the other teams sideline is worse than electrocuting, hanging and shooting puppies? Puppies.Let your kids watch one of those dogs getting electrocuted while hanging from a noose as it jerks around to try and buck free and live. Or look at a mauled, scared and bleeding mess of a dog after a brutal fight and see how your kids react to those very real, very gory and very brutal images.

Tell me then which is worse.

Assuming he does care, the better question is do you think anyone from his office would actually read your e-mail? I'd bet my house that Goodell will never see it, and that it is being deleted without being read.

Why would you take your anger out on direct tv?
They have more juice than me.500k is a joke. The Pats and the Pats fans are punished by the draft picks. That coach should be the only one punished.
The Pats and Pats Fans ARE NOT Hurt by this punishment. Instead of paying for TWO first round draft choices next year they will only have to pay for one. Thanks San Francisco. Within this additional savings, the Patriots may be able to resign Randy Moss or sign a veteran linebacker who is looking for a shot at the Super Bowl. This incident will only serve as motivation for the Patriot players on their quest for the Super Bowl this year. At the conclusion of the decade the Patriots will have won more Super Bowls than any other organization, including the steroid fueled Steelers of the last 37 years. If the good people of Atlanta really care that much about sports then they should have spent more time watering the greens at East lake for the Super Bowl of Golf.

Don't you think you are being a little hard on the genius John? I mean he didn't understand the rule :

In a statement issued two hours after the punishment was announced, Belichick said he misinterpreted the league's rules but acknowledged that "part of my job as head coach is to ensure that our football operations are conducted in compliance of the league rules and all accepted interpretations of them."

Belichick misinterpreted the following:

NFL rules state, in part: "no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." That was re-emphasized in a memo sent Sept. 6 to NFL head coaches and general managers in which the league said: "Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches' booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

An objective person could clearly see that this rule is difficult to understand. :lmao:

At least my Labrador had a hard time understanding it when I tried to explain it to him.

The fun part will be when somebody like NFL Films takes some of the playoff games and breaks down game film immediately after halftime. I will be surprised if some interesting things don't show up. Especially comments like " Belichick is a real genius. Some of the halftime adjustments he made were amazing." :lmao:

Blah f-in blah stop crying. You dont care if it was your team you be defending them. Dont be a lying Fin and say you wouldnt. Bunch of moralist crap, the players have been taking steroids for years and nobody said a damnword cause- HEY everybody does it right. The Pats hailing from the #### hole called New England are still the best team in the NFL, yeah the Colts won it last year, But more times than not, 9 times out of ten the Pats are going to win the game. They watch game film all week, the only difference is the Pats stretched the rules in the Open, they could have had some one in the stands filming, did they? No they were on the sidline filming straight on where everyone could see, they could have had somone in the bleechers with Binox and radioing the signals to the offense. So I dont care tell them to knock it off. The jets would have still lost, why cause they suck thats why.

I don't think they're saying that it's worse behavior. They're saying that on-field misconduct has more impact on the NFL's product than does off-field transgressions. And they would be right from my point of view. Tossing out a player for a DUI (or worse) is all about appeasing the moralists, and has little to do with the game itself.

But I am not a fanatic. Thanks to FF I am more of a fan of the NFL. Vick suspension was the right thing to do. That coach got off easy.

So, how do you know for a fact that the teams that you "like" don't do this? It is pretty well know that the Pats were not the only team using video in this way. Hence the rule in the first place. Shanahan admitted 5 years ago that he actively attempts (attempted) to steal signals. Should the Broncos fire him?The truth is that the Patriots were made an example out of because A) Mangini snitched on them; and B) they are the Patriots

End of story.

This is my problem with this mess. The Coach should have been made to pay the price by serving a suspension. He will get that fine money back so it is not a punishment. Suspend HIM and give back the picks to the team.

It's a double standard.

Goodell stance:

"We're going to come down hard whomever gives the NFL a bad image."

What is WORSE for the image than to have your premiere coach get caught cheating consistantly and he doesn't even get a supension?

Lost all credibility in my book.

If the NFL can fine the Patriots then high school and pop warner coaches should be shaking in their boots that they are next. I video taped our week 7 opponent last weekend and we have watched the tape to scout them, even figuring out the signals in correllation to the play called.
Posted in another thread that when I scouted for High School we did the same thing. My memory sucks. However, in High School sign stealing is done more to steal the offensive signals (no helmet radio). The D can change on the fly quicker based on knowing the opponents offensive signals than the offense can in knowing the defensive signals.
Honestly unless they watched the film at half time then the filming was doing no good. How about the NFL worry about kicking out the real cheaters, the guy's roided up on HGH. Merrimen roids ups, gets a whopping 4 game suspension then goes to the pro bowl all while jacked up. The NFL is one huge steriod manifestation and they are worried about advancements in scouting.
This could not be more incorrect. It is very simple to adjust to signals. If my "man in the sky" determines that a circular motion indicates a cover two then my QB knows to go to the underneath receiver to the side of the wideout running the clearing route. If he determines that a hand to the back of the head indicates a Sam-Will blitz my QB knows to check off to a three step drop. It is a very simple game when you know what the other team is doing. I would estimate that this information could easily be worth 10pts a game. Stealing signals is absolutely a part of any competition. It is the method of stealing that was egregious in this case. Couple that with the preseason warning and the recurrent nature of the offender and I think the penalties were justifiable. As to "hurting the fans" - the fans benefitted from this illicit behaviour. Their team won. I am certain that the commish would reinstate the lost draft pick if the Pats agreed to fire Belichick. The fine is essentially meaningless. It is a public relations step and indications are that Kraft will pay the fine for Belichick indirectly so as not to be conspicuous.

Ding!Winner. The method is key. Right or wrong, it is more or less accepted, at least by the sporting institutions, that people are out there trying to steal signals. If they can do it just using their 2 eyes and their brain, then so be it. Sign stealing has caused more than a few scraps on the baseball diamond, but I don't recall big official penalties being dealt out. The method is so important because anyone could break down somebody's signs using this method, gain a huge advantage, and really tear that team apart. Without aids, that's not out of the question, but it's far less likely that anyone will make a big enough difference to really tilt the playing field significantly.

Let me clear up what is really going on here:

FDNY = Fire Department of New York

Fire Department of New York = Jets Fans

Jets Fans = :lmao: :lmao:

I am not making an accusation here, just throwing this out there to think about. Mangini was probably neck deep in this when he was with BB. This is probably how he knew what was going on and as a BB understudy, wouldn't be surprised if Mangini actively engaged in trying to "learn" other opponent's play calls.

Yeah, certainly a Pats fan, but not  My only point is that this whole thing is being overblown by people that hate the Pats irrespective of this "scandal" -- namely Jets fans, Steelers fans, Colts fans, Chargers fans, etc. Do you think that FDNY would be getting on his moral high horse and have written to the commissioner if this had involved the Arizona Cardinals?

I would even if it was the Jets. You do not know me. People who do know me tell my feelings about honor are way out there.

Good for you but I'm still not sure how "honor" relates to a player being suspended from the league for something that had no impact on the games.

You are one of those parents huh .... I don't know which is more sad: The fact that you are scouting and trying to decipher signals in a pop warner league or the fact you are bragging about it.

LOL. Good luck with that.

Isn't there an email address I don't want to spend the extra $.40 to mail the letter> I have to pay for DTV also and the Superfan to boot!!!
