My Home Was Burglarized (1 Viewer)

Happened to us over a decade ago in an old house. I always have deadbolt doors with key locks on both side. You cannot get in or out of our house without a key so you can haul off anything big. Well these punks took a golf club from the detached garage, smashed the window of the back door and found out that won't work. Then the window of the back bedroom only to find out once inside, you cannot get out. They pulled the door handle right off the front door. It was, also by design, easy to pull right off from the inside. You had to open it just right. We know it was punks because of what they took which wasn't much. Now accessible windows are surrounded by vegetation that will cut you to ribbons if you try and enter thru a window. These type of people are too stupid to check that first so they would get sliced up trying to get into our current house.

Yes, it would definitely be "super" unusual to have a home invasion while someone was actually home.

"In the United States and many other English speaking countries (though not Britain), a home invasion is an illegal and usually forceful entry to an occupied, private dwelling with intent to commit a violent crime against the occupants, such as robbery, assault, rape, murder, or kidnapping."
Ok. Thanks for the insight here.

Yeah thanks for posting something snarky with the incorrect vernacular.  Dumb Aggie.  :bye:

Sorry. That really sucks.  I hope the theft loss is covered by insurance.  You can also claim federal tax deductions.

Wow--that frigging sucks.  I agree with the poster that said thank god nobody was home.   That was truly a blessing.   I can tell you that as a member of the jewelry business--these types of invasions seems to be happening more and more often.  I work with insurance companies and their customers about re-making and replacing stolen items from circumstances like this on a fairly regular basis.  It truly sucks--and I cannot imagine the feeling of violation that your family must be going through.   I can tell you that through many of the discussions that I've had with law enforcement and insurance companies--that many of these types of crimes are not random.  Many of them are perpetuated by criminals that case neighborhoods to see patterns of when people leave their homes, signs of people going on vacations--and some of it is even perpetuated by international criminal groups.

I know people have mentioned this earlier in the thread---but definitely do what you can in order to disguise the fact that you are going away. Don't post messages/pictures on social media while you are away, try to inform the post office to hold your mail if you are away for a while--as piling up mail is a sign that nobody is home.  If you are able to load your car/van up in a garage where people can't see you loading up suitcases in the middle of the street--do so.  Lastly--if you have trustworthy neighbors--tell them if you are going away--and tell them if you have any sort of plans to have any workers at your place. Many times--these home invasions are perpetuated by people that disguise themselves to be remodelers, plumbers, cable guys...etc.  It truly sucks that something as easy as going away for a few days requires all of this thought--but it's just the world we live in.   My sympathies to the OP and his family.

Sorry. How much would you say you are out? Door, cash, jewelry etc.

Will your homeowners insurance cover everything (minus the deductible)?
I have Travelers and from what I hear they are pretty reputable. I have all of my personal and business through them so I'm hoping they take care of me. I say a rough estimate is in the $6k range not including the cost to replace the door and the carpet.

Ugh.  One of my worst fears, especially since I'm sure the Mrs. would never want to be by herself in the house for a looooong time.

What measures did you take to increase security?
I was kind of kidding but I did sleep with a machete last night. I have 2 dogs so I'm not too concerned about an issue when we're home. My wife is already hitting she wants to move. We are renters and the lease is month-to-month.

You have teenage children?  If so, any of their friends "questionable"?
No, we have a 2 year old and a 7 month old and we do not associate with anyone I could see doing this. My best guess is that it was someone who works on the property and is familiar with the set-up.. hard to describe but we have a unique backyard that connects multiple units that you really kind of have to be familiar with.

Why don't you lock your car doors?
My daughter did not lock hers the first time it happened to us.  The other locked cars were left alone.  The succeeding times, I believe the got my wife once and me once.  Just left the car open by accident.  Who knows how many times the tried the doors but probably someone in the subdivision.  In all occasions, they left change and only took bills.  Left my oakleys too but they were put away.

I had a car stolen and 3 cars broken into. The stolen car was locked but didn't have an alarm. Two of the break-ins occurred to cars equipped with alarms. The alarms went off but the thieves continuied their crimes until someone came outside to the parking lots. In one case, a neighbor called the cops and the thieves were caught.  In the other case, I came outside upon hearing my alarm only to see a kid jump out of my truck and jump a fence. The kid had hit 5 cars in the apt parking lot that night.

You do what you can to deter thieves but stuff still happens.

To the OP, I feel sorry because I'm sure you feel violated. It probably is time to move.

Simpli-safe home alarm system.   put one in my lake cabin.  Took about 15 minutes.   $15 a month where the alarm goes to police.  No contract so you can do it for a month or whatever..  Also the alarm is brutally loud.  anyone hearing that is getting out of there.   it's a wireless system & easy to install.  My total cost was about $400 & you can customize as in more doors, windows, etc.  You can also get the alarm to go off from breaking glass.   Amazing product.
.

I have a " funny" car break in story. Over 10 years ago, I had a bumping system in my car including a nice subwoofer in the trunk. The subwoofer was attached to the trunk with a bracket so it wouldn't slide. I was always nervous about getting a flat and not being able to get to the donut with the subwoofer attached so I already kept a small screwdriver in the glove compartment. Well I used to park at a park and ride and they smashed the driver's side window, somehow found the screwdriver and then proceeded to use MY screwdriver to steal the subwoofer and some amps.

When I lived in Newark I would always leave my car doors unlocked to avoid having a window smashed. From time to time I would find my stuff was rummaged through and a few coins missing but better than a smashed window.

Only awkward moment was when I came out to find a bump sleeping in my backseat.

Ugh that sucks.  Pretty sure my wife would make us move.  We've twice had someone in our unlocked cars in our driveway over the last 15 years and that #### freaks her out for weeks.
Wow, this exactly has happened were I lived since 1999.  Wife has same reaction.
Wife wants to move now. We were planning a cross-country move in October of next year - she wants to do it sooner.
