I've wondered about my hometown Falcons going after CJ after their history of 1st round WR picks in the last several years:

2005: Roddy White

2004: Michael Jenkins

The common denominator is that Michael Vick is throwing at them (not "to" them :hey: )

I think the Falcons need defense more than anything personally.

How are the Browns going to trade down when the Raiders are going to select CJ #1 and hold him for the highest ransom? :hey:

Tampa Bay talking trade for Johnson?

By John Murphy and Jason Cole

April 16, 2007

... There is increasing speculation among personnel men that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to make a run at trading up from No. 4 overall to the top pick in the NFL draft in an effort to get Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

"I definitely get the feeling that's where the Bucs are going," an executive from another NFL team said this week.

Three weeks ago, Tampa Bay general manager Bruce Allen said he had been in contact with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.

"Al talked to me about what he wants to do, but I'm not sharing that with you," Allen said with a smile. There was speculation that the Bucs had already offered Oakland all four of their picks in the first three rounds (Nos. 4, 35, 64 and 68 overall) to move up. The Bucs received the No. 64 overall pick after trading defensive tackle Anthony McFarland to the Indianapolis Colts last season.

... Tampa Bay met with Johnson in Atlanta on Friday and agent Bus Cook said the meeting went very well.

"Calvin was impressed with them and he got the feeling they were very interested in him," Cook said.

... "Gruden isn't taking a quarterback," the general manager of another NFL team said. "He doesn't like young quarterbacks. He already tried that route with [Chris] Simms and he couldn't stand it. And he has to win now."

There is a strong belief around the NFL that Gruden, who has gone to the playoffs once in the four seasons since leading the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title, is under pressure to win this season. Given that, the 6-foot-5, 239-pound Johnson is considered the most NFL-ready player at this point.
PFT relays Cole's story. Jason has cred, especially on things Tampa Bay related since he comes from the South Florida NFL beat and has strong sources there. See how PFT speculates that the Browns started this rumor. Its a Stretch Armstrong reach by PFT to suggest that since spreading a rumor of Tampa giving up their top four choices wouldn't change Oakland's selection and it certainly wouldn't goad Tampa Bay into any action other than a strong denial which would put the kibosh on any trade from taking place. So PFT is showing their smoothe cranial side once again in making such a moronic speculation that Cleveland is behind the latest rumor. Heck they can't even come up with a story unless they ride the coat tails or a real journalist. Also Cole has no Cleveland connections AFIK.

One other thing about the PFT speculation that Cleveland began this rumor. If Tampa Bay traded up and Oakland got the Bucs first and two second round picks and their third rounder then Detroit is dying to trade down. Oakland would then ship a second to Detroit and move back to the second pick to take Russell and they would keep the additional second and third round picks from Tampa Bay. So PFT should stick to their day job of rolling old ladies for their Social Security checks at the first of the month rather than trying to sulley the Browns by their assinine speculation that we started this rumor that would not help us in the least.

BUCS PLOTTING A PLAY FOR JOHNSON?

John Murphy and Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports report that some NFL types believe that the Buccaneers are planning to make a play for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

The selection is currently held by the Raiders, who fleeced the Bucs five years ago out of two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and $8 million for the "rights" to coach Jon Gruden.

"I definitely get the feeling that's where the Bucs are going," an executive from another NFL team told Yahoo!

Though we realize that much of our own stuff comes from unnamed executives and other league sources, it's hard to put much credence in the above quote without knowing who said it. The Browns, for example, would have a strong interest in seeing such a deal go down, since it would ensure that either quarterback JaMarcus Russell or quarterback Brady Quinn will be available when Cleveland picks at No. 3.

Per the report, there is also speculation that the Bucs have offered four first-day picks (No. 4, No. 35, No. 64, and No. 68) for the No. 1 pick. Under the trade chart, however, that quartet of picks falls 130 points short of the value of the first overall selection. As a result, the Bucs would have to give up all of their remaining picks -- with the exception of two compensatory picks at the bottom of round seven -- to make up the entire difference.

Bottom line: If Al Davis is going to give up the No. 1 pick to two of his former employees (Gruden and G.M. Bruce Allen), it will have to be on the Raiders' terms. We wouldn't be surprised to see Davis ask for all of Tampa's picks in 2007 and a first-rounder in 2008.

And we also wouldn't be surprised to see the Bucs give all of it up; for Gruden and Allen, having to worry about not having a first-round pick in 2008 will be a good thing, since it will mean that they did well enough in 2007 to still have jobs.
Bottom line. Look for CJ to go #1 either by Oakland or Tampa Bay or some other team who trades up for him.

I could see that, but whoever trades for #1 has to deal with Al Davis, so it's not gonna be easy for anyone to trade up.

It is a slam dunk in this instance.Oakland would get:- the guy that they want a slot lower/cheaper- an additional second round pick- possibly retain the additional third round pickDetroit would only have to move down two slots and pick up an additinal second rounder.Slam -meet- Dunk. Even Weird Al isn't stupid enough to thumb his nose at that offer where in the end he'd only move down one slot and pick up an extra second and third rounder AND get the exact same guy he wanted to take at #1 for a cheaper signing bonus. Everyone would win except for Cleveland in that instance if Savage truly has eyes for JaMarcus Russell which I think he does. I sure as heck do so I think PFT is housing more shiite than a clogged colon.

The Pats have their OL locked up for decent money for several more years . . . and they use 2 of their first 3 picks on offensive linemen?

New England is an easy team to figure out. They're not gonna reach. When in doubt, they pick OL and DL. I would have rather have picked a LB instead of a 2nd OL, but the LB wasn't there. As far as OL being a need, they've slipped the last couple of years, and I think Matt Light is done.

If Light was "done", then why did he get picked to the Pro Bowl this year?

Because Ogden was hurt and the fans voted for him based on years prior. If your a Pats fan, you had to notice a huge decline in his game last year. Even if he does rebound, they could replace Kaczur, who played pretty bad as well.

Pro Bowl = proper measure of performance?

I don't see the Colts taking a QB at all, and certainly not in round 3. They have too many bodies to fill in other positions to waste a high pick on a QB. The rest of the Colts' picks look OK.

Although I like the Chargers trade with GB and taking a S with that 1st round pick I think them taking 2 1st day WRs and Troy Smith at QB very unlikely. Chargers have Whitehurst and Volek.

Feel free to tell me I'm a moron.

10 10 Houston (from Atlanta) - LaRon Landry, S, LSU
There might be one trade at the top of the draft but I don't see two.I also agree that the Browns are targeting Peterson with their first pick. If they can move down to do so great. If not, he's their pick at No. 3 regardless of who is on the board.

Thumbs up for the effort.

If the Raiders walk away from this draft with a 2nd round RB-FB tweener, a 3rd round character ? at DT, and two guards back to back, I might cry myself to sleep for a month.

:goodposting:You have Willis falling farther than most mocks - any particular reason?
1. No way do the Bills take Lynch over Willis.Bills may take Willis and Timmons in the 2nd and take a RB in the 3rd round like Brandon Jackson or Pittman.2. what's with the Bills taking 2 OL. They just spent a bazillion $$$$ on 3 free agent OL. not going to happen.

:goodposting: these guys are going to be the big movers and shakers in this draft. Where ever Lynch goes, it begins a domino effect for teams scurrying to trade for Turner. I'm not even sure that Houston lets Lynch get by them @ 10. Haven't heard anyone talking about it, but Ahman Green is no spring chicken, and they need to improve the running game, with a pick this high, they *might* snag Lynch right under Buffalo's nose...everyone wants CJ, so a trade is likely there, too..

You have Willis falling farther than most mocks - any particular reason?
There's nothing wrong with him, I just saw better choices for the teams above #18.
If Willis is available at #15(which I do not believe) then Steelers will run to the podium to take Willis.
I thought about Willis for several Teams, but Carriker is too good of a fit for the Steelers. He can play DE in the 3-4 (and be a pro-bowler for years) or DT in a 4-3. He's a perfect guy to get if they are thinking of making a transition.
Although I like the Chargers trade with GB and taking a S with that 1st round pick I think them taking 2 1st day WRs and Troy Smith at QB very unlikely. Chargers have Whitehurst and Volek.
I think they need to take 2 WR's 1st day, but see your point on Troy Smith. My whole thought on this pick was 1) Troy had already fallen lower than I thought he would. 2) Volek was just insurance in case Rivers flopped. 3) Volek wants a chance to start somewhere and still holds some value in a trade.
The Packers will draft a DB somewhere in the first 4 rounds.
I could see them taking a CB in round 4, but mark my words that Paul Williams from Fresno State will be a steal for whoever gets him.
Please explain the Cowboys taking Beason (or any LB for that matter)
I went BPA, also Greg Ellis is coming off an achillies injury and the converted DE may not be the best fit for Wade Phillips zone blitzing scheme.
:D

1. No way do the Bills take Lynch over Willis.Bills may take Willis and Timmons in the 2nd and take a RB in the 3rd round like Brandon Jackson or Pittman.

2. what's with the Bills taking 2 OL. They just spent a bazillion $$$$ on 3 free agent OL. not going to happen.
I debated Lynch vs Willis for a while. I think that they can't let Lynch pass by. I personally like Lynch better than Peterson, but I wouldn't be surprised if they took Willis instead. I can't help that they overspent on OL. I like their Left side of the line, but the right side doesn't scare anybody. I did think hard about HB Blades with the last pick though. Dockery will definately help, but he got about 10 mil more than he should have. Thanks for all the comments so far, I'm gonna use these to tweak my picks before my draft party contest, so keep firing. If I posted a response about your team and you disagree, please post a second comment. You guys probably know your team needs better than I do. I'll miss nuances such as what you spent on a certain guy or a guys current injury status.

If this is the case, I don't see how he makes it past #17.

He's not an OLB.

At this spot he would have to be the best available on the Jags board. Peterson is getting up there and will have to be replaced in the near future. Darryl Smith can move back outside if it's in the teams best interest anyway, but I was under the impression that he could play inside or out- Am I incorrect in assuming this?

Not sure I understand ARI moving up, when Levi Brown will clearly be there at 5 or even later if they could find somebody to trade down with (ie Miami so they can grab Quinn).

Why not take Jarrett in the first and S Smith in the second? Immediate chemistry, work ethic to help one another is there and they only travel about an hour-two hours from their comfort zone.

:hey:

Just having fun since you had the bolts taking Hill in the first and S Smith in the second. I wouldnt mind that scenario as a bolts fan, neither would Gates, Rivers and LT2. I think there are other needs though but solid effort.

Not bad.. You did a fine job. Joe Thomas to Arizona is one I havn't seen yet.. I think they do need to trade up to get him. He's one more piece to the puzzle and they need some O-line help in a bay way.

Bills have zero at MLB . In their cover-2 configuration, that is the most critical element. There are no options in the draft or free agency that give them the speed and range that Willis does. They can get a serviceable RB in Booker or Jackson in the 3rd round to team with Atrain and eitehr Chris Brown or Corey Dillon (or even Ricky Williams) to be competitive at RB.

No way they take Lynch over Willis.

I really liked this when I first started, but how much TB wants CJ is really bothering me. If they trade up to Detroit, it totally messes up this mock. I might blow it up and start again.
