Naked Wines (1 Viewer)

Anybody else doing this? If you're unfamiliar to Naked Wines it's sort of like a wine co-op. I started it this past December when I got some coupon to get 12 really nice wines for like 40 bucks. You do this with the understanding that you become a member (aka "Angel") and can cancel, but my wife and I liked the wines so much we decided to give becoming an Angel a shot. Way it works is that you're committed to spending $40/month (which they auto-charge to your credit card) and then you can buy cases of smaller vineyard stuff on the cheap.

So far, I gotta so it's been awesome. Every bottle has been good and has cost us well under $100. Their customer service, so far, has also been phenomenal. For example, since i'm in a state where shipping costs cannot be free, they've offered to hook me up with a free bottle every month to offset the cost and just been calling in on my last order they saved me like $40.

If you drink a few bottles of wine per week and particular like Napa area wines, give this a shot.

I got a $100 gift card from Newegg after a series of purchases and gave this a whirl around Christmas. I liked the wines and thought it was a really decent deal with the gift card. I'll be waiting until I get on their Angel list for another buy.

Its interesting. I'm willing to give it another shot.

the wines are decent, and you can find a lot of variety as they bring in small producers from around the world. if you're looking to get daily drinkers or wines for a large event (graduation, wedding, etc.) and don't want to break the bank, it's a good way to go.

that said, these are not Ultra Premium wines from cult producers in Napa/Sonoma. the top-end stuff peaks at around $40.

if you visit their tasting room in Sonoma Valley (shared with St. Anne's Crossing at the old Blackstone property) be prepared: they will pour you a LOT of wine. like 10 or 12 selections. some hits, some misses depending on what's on the menu that day.

Right. We're not talking huge savings on the $100 dollar plus well-known bottles. These are smaller vineyards that are, by my understanding, young and using this program to grow.

The stuff I've had tastes far better than comparably priced stuff though in the store. So, for those who drink a few $10-$20 bottles per week, which is my wife and I do, this seems to be a really nice option.

I tried one of their intro offers. I'm no wine expert, but I was not impressed with the wines and wouldn't buy them again at regular prices.

yep. exactly that. lots of young winemakers looking to get their stuff out there. lots of stainless steel and oak chips/dust (since new oak is so expensive).

Same here. Can't remember where I got the card from though.

I ordered a few of their seasonal 6-packs last Christmas which came with either 6 bottles of Red or 6 White. Absolutely horrible wine.

Strongly would not recommend.

This. I used them a few years ago for a while. This is when I was single and younger and had worse taste in wine. Even then I found the wines to be pretty terrible. I won't go back.

So not really good if you drink mostly French and Italian?
depends.

if you're looking for DOCG Primitivo you're out of luck.

if you're looking for Central Valley Zinfandel, you're probably ok.
I get decent daily drinkers, some DOCG's, in the $12 range. Looks like this won't be much of a bargain for me. Not a big fan of new world, especially Cali wines. Occasional Cabernet but that's about it.

yeah, shipping will probably make it less of a deal for you.

you've probably got a much better selection of [good/very good] old world wines at a similar price point on the East Coast already.

So the $40 each month is essentially a membership fee and then you can get the various we wines at your choosing for a discount?

No, it's basically a $40 commitment to spending money buying wine per month. You can let it build up if you want and buy a case of 12 like every three months for around $120 or so (which seems to be the average cost of one of their special bundles).

Two buck fifty Chuck from TJs or Three Wishes from WF are both infinitely better at $2.50 a bottle compared to what you are going to get from Naked Wines.

The deal(s) that I got in on was a huge holiday discount promotion that made a 6-pack only $9.99 shipped to CA. At a $1.75/bottle, I figured I had nothing to lose.

I am not one to toss alcohol, but we ended up pouring a few that tasted of vinegar down the drain; would not even use them as cooking wines.

For the others, we added Coca-Cola or 7-Up to make them drinkable.

If you are enjoying them, it's all good. I am not here to bash your tastes or opinions.

Costco really may be your bet on good wines at a good price. The Bevmo penny sale is a good time to stock up too.

I'll up you one...

Buy the big jug of Carlo Rossi Paisano for $11. Throw that stuff over ice. Perfect.

Those $10 Carlo Rossi jugs take me back to my senior year high school and college dorm days... fond memories!
