Nation's Worst Mass Shooting of the Year - and no thread? (1 Viewer)

Interesting.  I guess it does not fit anyone's agenda.
Patience, grasshopper. Higgs will probably start a thread as soon as the shooter is identified as a Muslim, illegal immigrant or BLM member.

It is interesting that 15 people are shot in a club in Cincinnati and the President is on Twitter complaining about the Democrats.

That dump is right across the river from my house.  You can hear the crappy music every night from our back porch.  Used to be a gay bar, so at least we don't have to listen to non-stop Madonna any more, but I still hope they shut the place down.

So they had it coming?

No idea what this thread is about but from what I see, CNN didn't bother to put it on the front page.....or if they did, I dont see it now.

About 100 people get shot dead every night.  Sadly one is hardly a blip on the news radar.  The number of people injured does make it newsworthy as a couple of them are still in critical condition.  But without some political angle from either side, these things will not get media attention.

Is a gunfight a mass shooting?
Well, technically, yes, if multiple persons are shot but that is not what people normally think of when they hear that there was a mass shooting.

A couple years back that was shootout between black gang members on a street corner (in Chicago?) that injured over a dozen people (no one was killed IIRC) and there were similar complaints about that: Where is the outrage? Why isn't there a thread? But such gang related violence is common, unfortunately, in many major cities, so doesn't fall under the mass shooting classification as it is commonly perceived.

It has nothing to do with gang violence.  A "mass shooting" has a specific definition that includes at least four deaths.

There is no agreed upon definition. And I would imagine if some guy stands  in Times Square with an assault weapon and shoots 50 people but no one is killed that would quality in most peoples mind as a "mass shooting"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_shooting

A mass shooting is an incident involving multiple victims of gun violence.[1] The United States' Congressional Research Service acknowledges that there is not a broadly accepted definition, and defines a "public mass shooting"[2] as one in which four or more people selected indiscriminately, not including the perpetrator, are killed, echoing the FBI definition[3][4] of the term "mass murder". Another unofficial definition of a mass shooting is an event involving the shooting (not necessarily resulting in death) of four or more people with no cooling-off period.[5] Related terms include school shooting and massacre. The lack of a single definition can lead to alarmism in the news media, with some reports conflating categories of crimes.[6]

Seems like the Congressional Research Service and FBI having a common definition would constitute an official definition and the 'unofficial definition' is just that.

OK, so if 50 people are shot in Times Square with an assault weapon, but no one is killed, that is not a mass shooting. Okie Dokie Pokie.

According to the Congressional Research Service and FBI that would be a yes.  Sorry you don't approve the definition, but it is the one the federal government seems to rolls with.

Either way they don't even know who did the shooting or why. The speculation is that this is some stupid club beef that escalated.

I find it interesting that it's the first time that some POS just having a gun in his pants is the reason for the shooting.  MORE of an anti-gun argument than any of the previous incidents where plotting/scheming/religious psycho were the real reasons behind it.  This sounds like it was just some angry POS who happened to have a piece on him.

I respect your opinion, but OTOH you should really give this a good look.

Some reports make it sound like a shootout. I like to wait a couple of days on things like this as the info is always confusing and conflicted for a while. We'll know more in 24 hours than we do now for sure.

There are lots of definitions - a single shot in a catholic church could be a mass shooting...
There is one definition that the government uses to define a mass shooting in the US.  That's how the statistics are collected.

You could define it as a flock of geese if you wish though.  "One million mass shootings just flew south for the winter."  I kind of like it, but I'm going to stick with the current definition for now.
