Need a Good Printer Combo (1 Viewer)

For our home office. Printer scanner copier. Don't care about fax.

Must have good multi page feeder for scanning and efax. Not printing high quality design stuff just standard office docs.

We've always bought the cheaper model from Office Max or Best Buy. Don't want to spend a ton but every machine I've bought has some issue a couple years in.

Did some shopping around and reading reviews before I purchased an Epson WorkForce 645 All-in-One in 2012. I was in Sam's getting ink for my old printer, when I saw the Epson priced at $180. Just looking at the prices for ink in the store, Epson's were much cheaper.

Auto document feeder works great. Didn't have that feature on my last printer. Had the Epson for a couple of weeks when I first used the ADF. Son had a fender bender and insurance adjuster wanted a copy of the police report. Read the instructions, remove the staple and started scanning. The user interface program on the computer is super, and I was able to export the scanned image into a PDF easily.

Fast b/w print speed, excellent color but SLOW.

Scanner is excellent for quick copies, but I prefer the user interface on the computer for higher quality print jobs.

Look into Okidata laser printers. We use the Okidata MB761 and it's great. It's got a really quick first page time as well.

Edit: laser, not laster!

The biggest cost of a printer is not the box, but the ink.

Go with a laser over an ink jet and you will save a lot in the long run.

Will second Epson. I bought a used 840 on Amazon and the knockoff cartridges are cheap and work well (unlike every other knockoff I've tried).

Color or B&W?

If B&W, I have been happy with my Brother MFC-7360N. Fast, has fax, but never use it. I have had it for a couple years, so there is probably a newer model. I can get a toner cartridge that lasts a while from Amazon for <$20.

Like most things it's not as cut and dried as that. Many factors weigh in to the cost per page and value over time. If I buy a more expensive laser and only print 30 pages a month, I'd likely never recoup the cost of (supposedly) less expensive toner. Likewise, using aftermarket inkjet refills cuts cost and if you're doing primarily black and white printing you can set the inkjet to monochrome which would use the much less expensive black cartridge.

Another vote for the Epson WF series.

Good deal on the ink but I'd be afraid they'd dry out before I used them. Very little printing here these days so that much ink might last me a lifetime.

My golden rule for low volume basic non-color home use is cheap lasers that take cheap cartridges. No ink jets. They are a pain. Yes, ink drys up, toner doesn't. Laser deals easily found bring the prices down to the same range as ink jets. Don't treat them as investments, treat them as expenses so don't cry if they don't last more than a couple of years but if you hardly use it then it will probably exceed your expectations. When it breaks just buy another cheapie. If it runs out of toner consider before buying toner evaluate if buying a replacement cheapie with a starter cartridge makes more sense.

I bought my MIL a Dell MFC laser I found at Staples last summer for $25. It's still going strong with the starter cartridge. She prints probably average of 1-3 pages a week. Multi-function printers can be found on sale for $75-$100 regularly. Brothers that use TN450 cartridges are good because replacements are easily found under $20.
