Need help, this is really rough (1 Viewer)

CJ I didn’t know they did at home.  That’s good to know.  I was lucky that the Vet was very kind.  She rubbed his head and talked to him, and asked if it was ok if we said a prayer before.

Yep there are multiple ones around me.  My sister is in a situation like Pro where she lives way out in the middle of nowhere. They had one come out to them for their dog.

She said they fed their girl some steak and just made her comfortable as the vet did the injection process. The vet would also take the body if they wanted, but they buried her on their land.

Her husband typically did as Pro mentioned. He would just shoot their dogs when it was their time. I found that cruel, but I understand he grew up on a ranch and that is the way things are done in the country.

I have called some vets. Waiting on a return call. Meanwhile I'm digging a grave. He's a big dog and I am not as young as I once was. Feeling sad and old.

Thanks for the advice in here. Who ever pointed out that I asked for advice but wasn't taking it was correct. I'm really upset and probably not thinking clearly. I left three messages on the last vets machine because I was sure I left the wrong phone number. They probably think I am insane. My dog who has been refusing dog food is apparently ok with deli slices of turkey and left over pork roast.

Back to digging 😥

Sucks you have to go through this. Catch a baseball game this afternoon with your buddy.

We have an appt with the vet in a few hours. They say they can come to the car and give him a sedative if he gets real agitated. We are watching baseball, kids are saying their goodbyes and I feel like a piece of me is dying.

I'm glad you are taking him to the vet and sorry you are going through this.

To be honest, doing this any other way is inhumane.  You are doing the right thing here.

Why do you think shooting a sick animal is cruel? Assuming you don’t miss, it is quick and painless, and avoids the potential stress associated with going to the vet.

Personally, if my pet was suffering with no hope of recovery,  I’d chose a home vet visit, but it’s hard to fault someone doing it the old fashioned way.

See your assumption above. That is why

what do you think the odds are of a one-time, < 1 second kill shot?

Are there no animal shelters or veterinarians within driving distance? I'd take the dog there and tell them that you have no money for treatment.

We did this with our newfie. We made her as comfortable as we could in the back of our suv. The vet gave her the shot in the parking lot while we were sitting with her. We took her home and buried her on our farm.

Sorry man. I know it's tough, but you're doing the right thing

I mean the big risk is sort of shaking and pulling out of it due to nerves.  If you can manage that it's >99%

Believe me I am not faulting anyone.

You know it is that whole city vs rural idea. My BIL has put his dogs down all his life via a .22 because he grew up that way. His view on animals is different because he had cattle and chickens all his life and they were there as a means to feed his family or send to the packing plant for money. You didn't grow attached to the chicken or the cow because it was soon to be a meal.

He is a great husband/father and has been there for my sister for 30 years. He never allowed a dog in the house ever, but he softened over the years because he knew what it meant to my sister and allowed their dog to stay in the house (and the reality is it would have been killed by coyotes). He let my sister have their last dog be put down by the home euthanasia because of what it meant to my sister.

I couldn't do it because the guilty would eat me alive, but I don't fault someone else's way of life

I live in the suburbs, am anti-firearm and nearly vegetarian. But I still think shooting a sick pet is a relatively humane option. Honestly I regret taking my last cat to the vet to be euthanized, as he hated riding in a car - because he knew that meant a visit to the vet.

In the future, I’ll have the vet come to my home. Glad the OP chose that route.

It is over. All done at the vet. I am not sure that is better for the animal and I don't want to debate that right now. I miss my buddy and the following week is going to suck ###.
So sorry.

Your buddy is now at peace.

Most of us in this thread have been in your position and can empathize.  I cried daily for weeks.

Sorry for your loss, and the bickering. Although it’s one of the hardest things a pet owner has to do, you did the right think to end his suffering.

I'm also sorry for your loss. Your bud, as stated, is now at peace. I feel awful. Keep on trucking, prosopis. I wish you well. I second Mrs. Rannous. Relating stuff may be helpful. Regardless, my condolences. Good dog.

My first morning without him. He would always run out pee, poop, and check the perimeter of the yard. There is a permanent path worn into the ground where he would check the fence line. I always said he was paw patrol checking for walkers.

Gonna be a rough one today. Today was our yard work, drink beer, watch baseball, and end the day with Game of thrones. I guess I'm on my own today.

It sucks man.  Losing one of your best friends is tough.  People who don't own dogs don't understand how close you get with them.  I prefer my dogs over people most the time.

Sorry for your loss.   :(

So sorry to hear this, as there is nothing tougher. You did the right thing taking him in though. You get to a point where are you keeping them around for them or you?

I had to put my girl down in January, and had someone come to my home. My home has not been the same since she left, and will not be. They say time heals, but sometimes it feels like yesterday that she received the needle.

Sorry, Pro.  It sounds like you gave him a good and happy life.  Thoughts are with you today.

Sorry to hear about your pup. It sounded like he got as much out of you as you did of him.

I've had to do this several times, and one thing that always helps me is knowing that whenever my dog dies, he is giving up his spot on earth so another shelter dog can have a good life with me and my family. It seems like whenever I've had to put a dog down, it's soon after where I seem to have another dog.

It's like my old dog is yelling down at me: "Hey dummy, there's this dog I know at the shelter who needs you to go get him. Like today. Go today. You know, like right now."

Always makes me smile and inevitably there is a new dog in my house.

So sorry to read this, GB.  It has me near tears.

Just remember it's OK to get another dog.  He's not a replacement, he's a new friend.  Someone told that years ago and it helped me.   :(
