Need Snowmobiling Recommendations (1 Viewer)

Trying to put together a guys trip with a buddy of mine for late January/early February. Neither one of us have been snowmobiling before but it sounds awesome. I don’t want to fly ALL the way out to the west coast, but as far west as Utah would be doable.

Would need to be fairly close to a major airport to fly in and out of and have plenty of lodging close enough to stay near (Hyatts nearby would be ideal as I have a bunch of points I can use). Would probably really only do 1 day of snowmobiling, so other activities in the area would be ideal.

Any suggestions?

Type of riding is valuable info. The deep powder riding looks cool but is a lot of work and if you’ve never ridden before you most likely will be quickly frustrated and ready to quit. If first time riders recommend going trail riding. Northern WI and UP of Mich have some great riding and a vast network of trails but a nearby airport may be an issue. Will be monitoring to hear recommendations people have for this niche sport.

Northern WI
Yeah, I was gonna say the area where i live is a great snowmobile area from what I have been told. Lots of trails with different types of topography. Just need snow.

The issue is a large airport. You can fly into Minneapolis or Milwaukee, but you are looking at a 3.5 - 4 hour drive to get here. You can also fly into Wausau, which leaves about an hour drive.

And you can even fly into Rhinelander, which puts you right in the middle of things and can branch off from there. So trails are within short drives from there.

I live in a small area called Harrison, and it's about 20 minutes from Rhinelander with a ton of snowmobile trails nearby (along with bars and restaurants near those trails)

The destination place amongst all of my buddies that went snowmachining was West Yellowstone/Island Park, Idaho area.

Talk about snow, they have it.

Grand targhee is close by if you want to hit up a fun little ski hill too.

I think we’d definitely be looking trail and likely a guided tour type thing.

And yeah, northern WI and UP seem great from what I’ve Googled, but also probably too much travel on what will likely be a fly in Wed fly out Saturday/Sunday type trip.

That may the most promising. Cost of traveling there/lodging isn’t super appealing but that may be the price of level of fun+convenience.

Park City seems to tick all your bullet points. Close to an airport, a few Hyatts to choose from, plenty of commercial outfitters that will get you set up on tours.

If you want something really unique and are willing to go a little further my cousin did the snowmobile tour of Yellowstone a few years ago and had good things to say. Further from an airport, though.

ETA: I see the Yellowstone idea was already floated above.

I third the Yellowstone rec. Plenty of guided tours with spectacular scenery and animals.

4th'd.

I snowmobiled for the first time a couple years ago in West Yellowstone. It was unbelievably gorgeous and fun. Great guided tours with all the equipment and gear provided. We rented a house in Island Park for a group of six.

I think SLC is the closest major airport and that's a 4 hour drive----but well worth it to see the park in the winter on a snowmobile.
