5 Fast Facts You Need To Know

March 10, 2014

Music legend Neil Young is launching PonoMusic this week. What is PonoMusic, how much will it cost, and why should you care about yet another music service? Here's everything you need to know about the impending launch of PonoMusic.

1. 'Pono' Is an 'MP3-Killing' Audio Format

Like FLAC and MP3 files before it,

Pono is a new audio format that aims to provide listeners with the best quality sound. Geek.com reports that the goal of Pono is to produce audio that faithfully reproduce the sound musicians hear in the recording booth when they're laying down tracks. FYI: Pono isn't just a silly, made-up word. It's actually the Hawaiian word for "righteousness."

This was all over The Verge the past couple of weeks. Lot's of arguments from audiophiles on pros and cons.

I am intrigued, but skeptical. I think it is important that music be recorded and available in the highest quality possible. That being said, I grew up listening to music on AM radio, scratchy LPs and eight track tapes, so mp3s sound great to me. I hope he is successful, but I am not sure if I will be buying Pono.

The OP is three times longer than it needs to be. What is with all of the duplication?
Combination needing to copy/paste via notepad, late night posting and beers... ;)

I'm holding out for brain caps.

ETA: And Pocahontas is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Though I do prefer touch more reverb on the Unplugged version to the studio. He knows how to use reverb without making his vocal identity about it.

Love Neil Young, but this thing has tons of red flags IMO:

1. It's own music player. Just another thing for folks to carry around. Plus, it's not integrated with any phone. Big loss IMO

2. The market for this is likely very tiny. I'm a huge music fan, and even if this sounds better than what I'm currently getting with my $10/month spotify subscription; I'm not going to spend the money to get new hardware and repurchase all of my music

3. No tie in with a spotify/pandora - Spotify is freaking awesome....I basically never have to purchase another album or worry about backing stuff up, organizing files again.

For me to even consider it, they'd have to partner with some phone (which would probably be difficult b/c of the hardware that I assume is needed for the pono technology) and with a spotify type company.

It's for audiophiles. People for whom the quality of the sound is important enough that carrying around a little device to get it is not a big deal. This isn't for the masses or just your garden-variety gadget nerd and they know it.

He's been a strong proponent of better quality music formats for years. I remember when he was pimping audio DVDs at least a decade ago. Those never took off either. I wish him luck but I doubt this gains widespread acceptance.

I'm sure he'd be happy to make money on it, but it's definitely a niche thing and I get the sense that it's much more him performing a public service than chasing a buck.

He's always struck me as a massive whore.

Yes, but the OP says it is an MP3 killer. It isn't. It is for a niche market.

It, or something like it, will be in the long run as costs come down. New technology tends to be expensive when it first hits the market and then prices drastically decrease in subsequent years.

I was always curious why the FLAC guys never got into anything like this.
